[Objective] To study the effect of anti-infective reconstituted bone xenograft(ARBX)on treating chronic hematogenous osteomyelitis as one-stage grafting.[Method]ARBX was used to treat 24 cases of chronic hematogenous osteomyelitis as one-stage grafting after debridement since September of 2001,17 cases of which were followed up for an average period of 34 months(range,12 to 79 months).[Result]Except 1 case failed to cure,and 1 resulted in recurrence of infection,and 1 with large segmental bone defect nonunion post-operatively,other 14 cases were cured,the cure rate was 82.4% which was better than traditional therapy.[Conclusion]ARBX has high osteoinductive activity and enhanced anti-infective capability,which enables it to be used as primary grafting to treat chronic hematogenous osteomyelitis.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the efficacy and the relevant effect factors of acupuncture for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in females.

METHODSOf 83 female patients of T2DM, 49 cases were deficiency of kidney yin syndrome and 34 cases were yin and yang deficiency syndrome. Acupuncture was adopted and the acupoints were selected according to the syndrome differentiation. In kidney yin deficiency syndrome, Taixi (KI 3), Shenmen (HT 7), Taichong (LR 3) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6), etc. were selected. In yin and yang deficiency syndrome, Shenshu (BL 23), Pishu (BL 20), Yishu (Extra) and Jingmen (GB 25), etc. were selected. In 3 courses of treatment, the changes in fasting plasma glucose (FPG), fasting insulin (FINS), insulin sensitivity index (ISI), insulin resistace index (Homa-IR), index of islet beta-cell function (Homa-beta), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were compared before and after treatment between the two groups. The relationship of the efficacy was analyzed in terms of the syndrome differentiation, age, duration of sickness, obesity and hereditary factors.

RESULTSAfter the treatment, the levels of FPG, FINS, Homa-IR, TC, TG and LDL-C were reduced obviously (all P < 0.01) and the levels of ISI, Homa-beta and HDL-C were increased apparently (all P < 0.01). The total clinical effective rate was 80.7% (67/83), in which, that of kidney yin deficiency syndrome was 83.7% (41/49) and that of yin and yang deficiency syndrome was 76.5% (26/34). The efficacy was not different significantly between the two syndromes. But, the younger the age was, the better the efficacy was.

CONCLUSIONAcupuncture positively regulates the glucose and lipid metabolism in the patients of T2DM. This therapy improves insulin resistance, enhances the body sensitivity to insulin and improves insulin beta-cell function. The efficacy is related to the patient's age.

AIM: To study the effects of insulin and glucose on tissue-type plamingen activator (tPA) and its inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) secretion in cultured human endothelial cells. METHODS: Human endothelial cell line ECV-304 was cultured with glucose and/or insulin at different concentrations with or without hypoxic exposure. RESULTS: The tPA, PAI-1 secretion and ratio of tPA/PAI-1 increased in endothelial cells during hypoxia. Insulin and glucose increased the tPA and PAI-1 secretion in endothelial cells exposed to hypoxia, and increase in tPA/PAI-1 ratio was also observed at 4 h and 8 h. CONCLUSION: Hypoxia stimulates the release of tPA and PAI-1. Insulin and glucose also stimulate the tPA and PAI-1 secretion during hypoxia.

Objective: To establish a method for determining the contents of quercetin, kaempferide, and isorhamnetin in Anoectochilus roxburghii and to provide scientific method for quality control of A. roxburghii and its related products. Methods: HPLC was used. Using Lanbo-Kromasil-C18 column, with methanol -0.2% phosphoric acid solution (50:50) as mobile phase; The detection wavelength was 360 nm, flow rate was 1.0 mL/min, and column temperature was 30 ℃. Results: Quercetin, kaempferide, and isorhamnetin showed a good linear relationship in the range of 11.0-165.6 (r = 1.0000), 11.4-170.4 (r = 0.9998), and 10.4-156.0 ng (r = 0.9995). The average recoveries of quercetin, kaempferide, and isorhamnetin were 97.69% (RSD = 1.1%, n = 9), 95.09% (RSD = 1.6%, n = 9), and 95.86% (RSD = 1.7%, n = 9). Conclusion: The method is simple, rapid, accurate, reproducible, and can be used as an ideal method for quality control.

BACKGROUND: It has been proved that interleukin-18 (IL-18) involves in the development of acute cerebral infarction (ACI) and is positively correlated with the time of brain stroke onset, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), as well as neurological deficit and low-density value of brain CT.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the dynamic changes of serum IL-18 in the course of ACI.DESIGN: Verification analysis with patients as subjects and healthy volunteers as controls.SETTING: Department of neurology of a municipal hospital.PARTICIPANTS: Totally 46 inpatients (29 males and 17 females) with ACI were randomly selected from the Department of Neurology of People's Hospital, Maoming City, between December 2002 and January 2004.Meanwhile, 40 healthy controls (27 males and 13 females) were recruited from those who came to the hospital for routine physical examination. All the participants signed informed consent.METHODS: Fasting peripheral vein blood of 2 mL was collected from the patients on the 1st, 7rh, 14th and 21st days of ACI onset, and from healthy controls on the day of routine examination. The blood samples were centrifuged at 3 000 r/minute for 15 minutes at 4 ℃, and then the supernatant was collected for detecting IL-18 level by ELISA.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The serum IL-18 level of patients on the 1st, 7th 14th and 21st days of ACI onset and that of healthy controls on the day of routine examination.RFSULTS: Totally 46 patients and 40 healthy controls were enrolled in this study and all data were statistically analyzed. The level of serum IL-18 was significantly higher in the patients with ACI than in normal controls on the 1st and 7th days of onset [(178±41) ng/L, (104±34) ng/L, (65±14) ng/L, P ＜ 0.01],but was similar on the 14th and 21st days [(88±36) ng/L, (72±33) ng/L,(65±14) ng/L, P＞ 0.05]. The level of serum IL-18 in ACI patients was significantly higher on the 1st day than on the 7th, 14th and 21 st days of the onset (P ＜ 0.05-0.01); moreover, it was also significantly higher on the 7th day than on the 21st day of the onset (P ＜ 0.05).CONCLUSION: The level of IL-18 increases obviously on the 1st day of ACI onset, and gradually decreases with the extended course of disease and time of treatment.
