1.The effect of different final intracanal irrigants on the bond strength of silicone-based sealer to root canal walls

Objective To evaluate the bond strength of GuttaFlow sealers to root canal walls after final rinse with two novel fi nal irrigation regimens, QMiX and 17%EDTA+0.2%Cetrimide (CTR). Methods Thirty single-canal teeth were prepared chemomechanically using 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) as root canal irrigants. The teeth were then randomly distributed into three groups(n=10)according to the final irrigation protocol:QMiX group,17% EDTA followed by CTR group and control group(normal saline,NS).After the filling with GuttaFlow using a lentulo spiral,the roots were transversally sectioned to obtain 2 mm thick dentinal slices.Then a push-out bond strength test was carried out,and failure mode was determined at×24 magnification.Results The push-out bond strength was significantly higher in QMiX group than that of EDTA+CTR group and NS group(P<0.05),and no significant difference was observed between EDTA+CTR and NS groups(P>0.05).The failure patterns were mainly mixed.Conclusion The QMiX,as the final irrigant,can improve the bond strength of silicone-based sealer GuttaFlow.
2.Chromosomal localization of primary gout susceptibility gene in a Chinese pedigree

Objective To determine chromosomal localization of the primary gout susceptibility gene in a pedigree.Methods The clinical data and the peripheral blood samples were collected in the pedigree members and the genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood.A genome-wide screening was performed using 400 micro-satellite DNA markers in this family,and linkage analysis was used to determine the chromosomal location of the primary gout susceptibility gene.Results Linkage analysis showed that the maximum LOD score reached 1.50 at marker D4S1572 (at recombination fraction?=0.00).Conclusion Since D4S1572 is localized at 4q25,the primary gout susceptibility gene of this pedigree is localized at 4q25.
3.Clinical observation on treatment of snake bite induced disseminated intravascular coagulation by qinwen baidu decoction.

OBJECTIVETo observe the effect of Qinwen Baidu Decoction (QBD) in treating snake bite induced dissseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
METHODSForty-six patients were randomly divided into the control group (n = 16) and the treated group (n = 30). They were all treated with the conventional therapy, including application of anti-snake venom serum and supplement of blood agglutination factors. For the treated group, QBD was administered additionally. The efficacy of treatment, chief indexes for DIC (platelet, fibrinogen and prothrombin time) and their recovery time, etc. were observed.
RESULTSThe total effective rate of the treated group was 93.33%, which was higher than that of the control group (56.35%), and the recovery time of chief DIC indexes in the treated group was significantly shorter than that in the control group respectively (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONQBD shows obvious effects of shortening therapeutic course and enhancing efficacy in treating snake bite induced DIC.

4.Resilience in China recruits and its influencing factors

Objective To explore the characteristic and its influencing factors of resilience in Chinese recruits to provide the scientific evidence for the mental health training. Methods Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA) ,Self-report Symptom Checklist 90( SCL-90), Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ) and General SelfEfficacy Scale (GSES) were applied to 2459 recruits(2231 males and 139 females, aged ( 19 ± 1.5 ) ) within two male recruits( 101.76 ± 14.06) was significantly higher than that of males (96.65 ± 15.62) ( t=4. 13, P<0. 0l ) ;Recruits with College and above education have significantly higher RSA scores than those with junior high school education and senior high school education (P < 0. 0l ). Between the only child group and non only child group, there was no significant difference in RSA total score , but significant difference existed only in three factors higher RSA group scored significantly higher in extraversion (Z = 19.13, P = 0.000), abreaction adjustment (Z =8.67, P = 0.600 ) and self-efficacy (Z = 19.48, P = 0.000 ), while scored significantly lower in the SCL-90 (Z =Resilience had significant positive correlation with extraversion, abreaction adjustment and self-efficacy, and negative correlation with the neuroticism and inhibition adjustment. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that extraversion, neuroticism,abreaction adjustment/inhibition adjustment and self-efficacy had predictive ability to resilience( explain 41% ). Conclusion Chinese recruits have good resilience. Emotion Regulation (abreaction adjustment/inhibition adjustment), extraversion, neuroticism and self-efficacy are important influencing factors of resilience for Chinese recruits.
5.Huntington Disease in Asia.

OBJECTIVEThe objective was to review the major differences of Huntington disease (HD) in Asian population from those in the Caucasian population.
DATA SOURCESData cited in this review were obtained from PubMed database and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) from 1994 to 2014. All the papers were written in English or Chinese languages, with the terms of Asia/Asian, HD, genotype, epidemiology, phenotype, and treatment used for the literature search.
STUDY SELECTIONFrom the PubMed database, we included the articles and reviews which contained the HD patients' data from Asian countries. From the CNKI, we excluded the papers which were not original research. Due to the language's restrictions, those data published in other languages were not included.
RESULTSIn total, 50 papers were cited in this review, authors of which were from the mainland of China, Japan, India, Thailand, Taiwan (China), Korea, and western countries.
CONCLUSIONSThe lower epidemiology in Asians can be partly explained by the less cytosine-adenine-guanine repeats, different haplotypes, and CCG polymorphisms. For the physicians, atypical clinical profiles such as the initial symptom of ataxia, movement abnormalities of Parkinsonism, dystonia, or tics need to be paid more attention to and suggest gene testing if necessary. Moreover, some pathogenesis studies may help progress some new advanced treatments. The clinicians in Asian especially in China should promote the usage of genetic testing and put more effects in rehabilitation, palliative care, and offer comfort of patients and their families. The unified HD rating scale also needs to be popularized in Asia to assist in evaluating the progression of HD.

6.Changes of myocardial enzymes in patients with acute carbon monoxide poisoning.

OBJECTIVETo study the clinical significance of changes of serum myocardial enzymes in patients with acute carbon monoxide poisoning.
METHODSTo determine the dynamic changes of the activity of myocardial enzymes and ECG in 62 patients with acute CO poisoning.
RESULTSIn patients with acute CO poisoning 5 kinds of myocardial enzymes begin to increase within 24 hours, the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine phosphokinase (CPK), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), alpha-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (alpha-HBDH), CPK isoenzyme (CK-MB) were (20.2 +/- 12.3), (151.6 +/- 91.8), (146.8 +/- 50.4), (154.8 +/- 47.7), (13.8 +/- 8.1) U/L respectively, while those in control group were (12.1 +/- 6.7), (90.6 +/- 17.3), (118.7 +/- 13.5), (89.9 +/- 27.9), (5.9 +/- 3.3) U/L respectively. There was significant difference between two groups (P < 0.01); 3 d later, the activities of 5 enzymes were still increased [(21.3 +/- 12.3), (105.8 +/- 51.4), (144.8 +/- 51.4), (159.8 +/- 35.4), (16.2 +/- 9.1) U/L respectively]. 7 and 12 d later, the activities of alpha-HBDH and CK-MB were still higher than those of control (P < 0.01). LDH(1) and LDH(2) increased to peak value in 24 h after poisoning (35.3 +/- 5.8), (43.8 +/- 5.7) U/L vs (24.8 +/- 3.9), (36.9 +/- 4.3) U/L, P < 0.01. The abnormal rate of serum LDH(1) was 78.7%, LDH(2) 58.3%, LDH 45.2%, CK-MB 37.1%, alpha-HBDH 33.6% and the abnormal rate of ECG was less than 10%.
CONCLUSIONAcute carbon monoxide poisoning may cause myocardial injury. Determination of serum myocardial enzymes may contribute to showing myocardial injury, early diagnosis and treatment, results of treatment and prognosis.

7.Impacts of exposure to 900 MHz mobile phone radiation on liver function in rats.

OBJECTIVETo study the impacts of exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) on liver function in rats.
METHODSTwenty adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into normal group and radiated group. The rats in normal group were not radiated, those in radiated group were exposed to EMR 4 h/ d for 18 consecutive days. Rats were sacrificed immediately after the end of the experiment. The serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and those of malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) in liver tissue were evaluated by colorimetric method. The liver histopathological changes were observed by hematoxylin and eosin staining and the protein expression of bax and bcl- 2 in liver tissue were detected by immunohistochemical method. Terminal-deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated nick and labelling (TUNEL) method was used for analysis of apoptosis in liver.
RESULTSCompared with the normal rats, the serum levels of ALT and AST in the radiated group had no obvious changes (P>0.05), while the contents of MDA increased (P < 0.01) and those of GSH decreased (P < 0.01) in liver tissues. The histopathology examination showed diffuse hepatocyte swelling and vacuolation, small pieces and focal necrosis. The immunohistochemical results displayed that the expression of the bax protein was higher and that of bcl-2 protein was lower in radiated group. The hepatocyte apoptosis rates in radiated group was higher than that in normal group (all P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONThe exposure to 900 MHz mobile phone 4 h/d for 18 days could induce the liver histological changes, which may be partly due to the apoptosis and oxidative stress induced in liver tissue by electromagnetic radiation.

8.Effect of propofol at uptake equilibrium on γ-aminobutyric acid in different cerebral regions in dogs.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of propofol at doses for different anesthesia depths on γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in different cerebral regions at propofol uptake equilibrium in dogs.
METHODSTwelve 12-18-month-old healthy hybrid dogs weighing 10-12 kg were randomly divided into light anesthesia group (n=6) and deep anesthesia group (n=6) with a single bolus dose of propofol (5.5 and 7.0 mg/kg, respectively) completed in 15 s followed by intravenous propofol infusion at a constant rate (55 and 70 mg·kg(-1)·h(-1), respectively). Blood samples (2 ml) were taken from the internal carotid artery and jugular vein to measure plasma propofol concentrations 50 min after the start of the infusion. The dogs were then sacrificed and tissues were taken from different brain regions and the cervical cord to measure GABA concentrations using high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC).
RESULTSThe plasma propofol concentrations in internal carotid artery and jugular vein were similar in both light anesthesia group (3.00 ± 0.31 and 3.10 ± 0.51 µg/ml, respectively, P>0.05) and deep anesthesia group (6.41 ± 0.05 and 6.40 ± 0.11 µg/ml, respectively, P>0.05). GABA concentrations in the brain regions were significantly higher in deep anesthesia group than in light anesthesia group (P<0.05). The dorsal thalamus and hypothalamus showed greater GABA variations [(83.83 ± 2.230%) and (85.83 ± 1.72)%] compared to other brain regions at different anesthesia depths (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONSIn both groups, plasma propofol concentrations in the internal carotid artery and internal jugular vein reach equilibrium at 50 min of propofol infusion. The variation of GABA is associated with the anesthesia depth of propofol, and GABA variation in the dorsal thalamus and hypothalamus plays an important role in propofol anesthesia.

9.Effect of noxious stimulation on regional distribution of propofol in canine spinal cord.

OBJECTIVETo observe the regional distribution of propofol in canine spinal cord under noxious stimulation.
METHODSTwelve healthy hybrid dogs (12-18 months old, weighing 10-12 kg) were randomly divided into control group (n=6) and stimulation group (n=6). All the dogs were anesthetized with a single bolus dose of propofol (7 mg/kg) in 15 seconds followed by propofol infusion at a constant rate of 70 mg/kg/h via the great saphenous vein of the right posterior limb. In the stimulation group, the tails of the dogs were clamped for 5 min after 45 min of propofol infusion. Blood samples were taken from the internal carotid artery and internal jugular vein at 50 min after propofol infusion to detect plasma propofol concentrations by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The dogs were then immediately sacrificed by decapitation and the frontal horn, posterior horn, intermediate zone, frontal funiculus, posterior funiculus and lateral funiculus of the spinal cord were dissected for determination of propol content by HPLC.
RESULTSThe plasma concentrations of propofol in the internal carotid artery and internal jugular vein were 5.07-/+0.23 and 5.03-/+0.10 microg/ml in the stimulation group, respectively showing no significant differences from those in the control group (5.09-/+0.03 and 5.08-/+0.03 microg/ml, P>0.05). In the control group, the propofol concentration was 5.09-/+0.08 microg/g in the frontal horm, 5.10-/+0.08 microg/g in the posterior horn, 5.05-/+0.19 microg/g in the intermediate zone, 5.06-/+0.14 microg/g in the frontal funiculus, 5.06-/+0.15 microg/g in the posterior funiculus and 5.06-/+0.41 microg/g in the lateral funiculus, showing no significant differences (P>0.05). The propofol concentrations in the frontal horn (7.65-/+0.47 microg/g) and posterior funiculus (7.06-/+0.82 microg/g) in the stimulation group were significantly higher than those in the other spinal cord tissues (P<0.05) and those in the control group (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONAt 50 min after intravenous injection of propofol at a constant rate of 70 mg/kg/h, plasma propofol concentrations in the internal carotid artery and internal jugular vein reaches equilibrium with a balanced distribution in all the spinal cord regions. Propofol concentration can be higher in the frontal horn and posterior funiculus under noxious stimulation.

10.Association of Bmi-1 expression with clinicopathological features and prognosis of colorectal cancer.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the expression of B cell specific MLV integration site-1 (Bmi-1) in colorectal cancer (CRC) and its correlation to the clinicopathological features and prognosis of CRC.
METHODSSixty CRC, 30 adenomas and 20 normal colorectal mucosal tissues were collected to detect the expression of Bmi-1 protein using immunohistochemistry, and the results were analyzed in comparison with the clinicopathological features and survival rate of patients.
RESULTSThe positivity rate of Bmi-1 expression in CRC tissue was 51.7%. In CRC, the rate of Bmi-1 overexpression was 25.0%, significantly higher than that in the adenomas and normal colorectal mucosal tissues (6.67% and 0%, respectively, P<0.05). The overexpression of Bmi-1 protein in CRC was obviously associated with distant metastasis and the TNM stage (P<0.05), but not with gender, age, tumor size, tumor site, histological type, differentiation degree and lymph node metastasis (P>0.05). But logistic regression analysis showed that Bmi-1 protein overexpression in CRC was associated only with distant metastasis (P<0.01,OR>1); Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the survival rate of the patients with high Bmi-1 expression was significantly lower than that in patients with low expression (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe overexpression of Bmi-1 protein was significantly correlated to the tumorigenesis, metastasis and prognosis of CRC, and may serve as an indicator for evaluating the prognosis of CRC.
