OBJECTIVETo study the effect and mechanism of ginsenoside Rg1 on the spatial learning-memory ability in rats with Alzheimer's disease after transplanted with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs).
METHODSUsing digital randomization table method, seventy-five male SD rats were divided into the bilateral FF transection model group (as the model group: ambi-hippocampal fimbria-fomix transected), the sham-operative control group (the SOC group: receiving the same modeling process as the model group, but without ambi-hippocampal fimbria-fomix transected), the ginsenoside Rg1 treatment group (as the treatment group: Two weeks after modeling ginsenoside Rg1 was peritoneally injected at the dose of 5 mg/kg, once daily for four weeks in total), the BMSCs transplanted treatment group [as the control group: Two weeks after modeling every rat received transplantation of BMSCs (10 microL, 1 x 10(6) cells)], and the ginsenoside Rg1 + BMSCs treatment group (as the combination group: They received both transplantation of BMSCs and peritoneal injection of ginsenoside Rgl). The spatial learning-memory ability of rats was detected by Morris water maze and the escape latency (s) was recorded, mRNA expression of nerve growth factor (NGF) was detected using Real-time PCR.
RESULTSSix weeks after the hippocampal fimbria-fomix (FF) transection, the escape latency o feach medication group was obviously shorter than that of the model group, and the spatial learning-memory ability of dementia rats was somewhat improved. The spatial learning-memory ability of rats in the combination group was (29.95 +/- 2.03) and the mRNA expression level of NGF was (1.13 +/- 0.15), better than those in the BMSCs group (44.36 +/- 1.43, 0.78 +/- 0.09, P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONSGinsenoside Rg1 could strengthen the spatial learning-memory ability in dementia rats after transplanted with BMSCs. Its mechanism might be possibly correlated with up-regulating mRNA expression of NGF in basal forebrain after BMSCs transplantation.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the safety, medium-term and long-term efficacy of transradial percutaneous coronary intervention for unprotected left main coronary artery lesions with 6 French guiding catheter.
METHODSSixty-one patients with unprotected left main coronary artery lesions were treated by 6 French transradial percutaneous coronary intervention between January 2008 and December 2009. The mean age of patients was (66.03 ±10.02)years (44-87). Among 61 cases, 40 had hypertension and 14 had diabetes mellitus; 22 had a history of smoking. The average left ventricle ejection fraction was (62.96 ±12.15)% (range: 28-86) and the average plasma creatinine level was (82.92 ±18.30)μmol/L (range: 44-130). The major adverse cardiac events (MACE) after the procedure were evaluated.
RESULTSProcedural success was achieved in all cases. A total of 67 stents were implanted. No in-hospital death occurred. Mean clinical follow-up period was (26.25 ±5.92) months (range: 19-44 months). MACE developed in 6 cases (9.8%) during the follow-up period, including 2 death (3.3%) and 4 case of target lesion revascularization (6.6%). Compared with low-risk group (SYNTAX score<33), MACE was increased in the high-risk group (SYNTAX score>32).
CONCLUSION6 French transradial percutaneous coronary intervention for patients with unprotected left main coronary artery lesions is safe and feasible procedure with desirable medium-and long-term outcomes.

OBJECTIVETo explore the role of macrophage colony-stimulating factor (MCSF) in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia.
METHODSBy ELISA method, MCSF concentrations were determined in serum samples obtained from 39 patients with preeclampsia and 40 normal pregnant women as controls. The concentrations of serum MCSF were compared between preeclampsia and normal pregnancy, and between early-onset and late-onset preeclampsia.
RESULTSerum MCSF concentrations were significantly higher in preeclamptic women than those in controls (431.0 kIU compared with 179.1 kIU, P<0.001). There were no significant differences in serum MCSF levels between early-onset and late-onset preeclampsia (P>0.05). Serum MCSF was not correlated with maternal age, gestational age, and placenta weight (P>0.05 for all).
CONCLUSIONIncreased level of serum MCSF is an important indicator of preeclampsia and it may play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease.

OBJECTIVEIn order to compare the efficacy of two kinds of membrane plasma separator on the treatment of patients with severe hepatitis B.
METHODS63 cases suffering from chronic severe hepatitis B were divided into two groups, 25 cases were treated with plasma exchange using Evacure-4A membrane plasma separator (A group) or 38 cases were using PS-06 membrane plasma separator (B group). Both of them also were treated with similar basic medical treatment. The level of serum total bilirubin, non-conjugated bilirubin, prothrombin time and albumin were tested at baseline and the end of the treatment with PE.
RESULTSEvacure-4A and PS-06 membrane plasma separators can effientively remove bilirubin, the levels of serum total bilirubin, non-conjugated bilirubin of all patients were significantly decreased after treated with PE. In A group, the level of serum total bilirubin, non-conjugated bilirubin decreased from (464.2+/-193.8)micromol/L to (279.4+/-158.7)micromol/L, (293.5+/-129.1)micromol/L to (175.5+/-106.7)micromol/L (t=5.45, 10.36, P<0.01) respectively. In B group, the level of serum total bilirubin, non-conjugated bilirubin decreased from (493.2+/-126.9)micromol/L to (299.7+/-96.5)micromol/L, (300.2+/-74.3)micromol/L to (171.5+/-53.1)micromol/L (t=5.17, 12.04, P<0.01) respectively. The level of serum albumin increased after treated with PE in A and B groups, to contrast with PS-06, the increasing percentage of albumin was higher when the patients were treated with PE using Evacure-4A membrane plasma separator [(8.3+/-0.7) % vs. (3.4+/-9.3) %, t = 2.76, P<0.01].
CONCLUSIONEvacure-4A membrane plasma separator may be better than PS-06 membrane plasma separator on the treatment of patients with chronic severe hepatitis B.

OBJECTIVETo compare the positive rate of antibody to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) in sera of patients with severe viral hepatitis between 1984-1990 year and 1997-2003 year.
METHODSSerum anti-HCV was detected by enzyme linked-immunosorbent assay (ELISA). It was detected by the first generation (1st) ELISA (Ortho Co. USA) in 79 cases of severe viral hepatitis during 1984-1990 year, and it was detected by the second generation (2nd) ELISA (Xiamen Xingchuang Co. China) in 251 cases of severe viral hepatitis during 1997-2003 year.
RESULTSThe positive rate of serum anti-HCV was 51.9% detected by the 1st ELISA in 79 cases of severe viral hepatitis during 1984-1990 year, and it was 1.2% detected by the 2nd ELISA in 251 cases of severe hepatitis during 1997-2003 year (chi2 = 133.68, P = 0.001).
CONCLUSIONTo compare with the positive rate of serum antibody to hepatitis C virus in severe viral hepatitis detected by the 1st ELISA, it was lower that detected by the 2nd ELISA

OBJECTIVETo observe the expression of dynamin-1 and phosphor-dynamin-1 in the hippocampus of children and rats with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) and to investigate the roles of dynamin-1 and phosphor-dynamin-1 in the development of MTLE.
METHODSMale Sprague-Dawley rats (aged 25 days) were randomly divided into acute control (AC), acute seizure (AS), latent control (LC), latent seizure (LS), chronic control (CC) and chronic spontaneous seizure (CS) groups. Lithium chloride-pilocarpine was used to induce a rat model of MTLE. The hippocampus samples of 5 children with a pathologically confirmed hippocampal sclerosis who received surgical operation were collected as a human model (HM) group, and the hippocampus samples of 4 dead children (without organic lesion of the hippocampus) were collected by autopsy as a human control (HC) group. The expression of dynamin-1 and phosphor-dynamin-1 in the hippocampus of children and rats with MTLE was measured by Western blot and immunohistochemistry.
RESULTSThe Western blot showed that the expression of phosphor-dynamin-1 was significantly lower in the AS and CS groups than in the corresponding control groups (AC and CC groups) (P<0.05). The expression of phosphor-dynamin-1 was significantly lower in the HM group than in the HC group (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in the expression of dynamin-1 among the AS, LS and CS groups and between the HM and HC groups (P>0.05). The immunohistochemical results showed that phosphor-dynamin-1 was highly expressed in the cytoplasm of hippocampal neurons of AC, CC and HC groups, but its expression was significantly reduced in the AS, CS and HM groups (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONSThe expression of phosphor-dynamin-1, not dynamin-1, is downregulated in the hippocampus of children and rats with MTLE during seizures, which suggests that the phosphorylation/dephosphorylation of dynamin-1 may be involved in the development of MTLE.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the effects of indoor and outdoor PM2.5 (fine particulate matter, particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 µm) on lung function of college students in autumn and winter in Wuhan.
METHODSIn this panel study, 37 college students (excluded subject of respiratory disease and smoking history) aged 19 - 21 were investigated by cluster sampling in a university in Wuhan. The follow-up study lasted for 28 days in total, including two study periods, Oct. 29 to Nov. 11, 2009 (autumn) and Dec. 23, 2009 to Jan.5, 2010 (winter), the peak expiratory flow (PEF) of the college students were measured daily in the morning and evening in the university. PM10 and PM2.5 were monitored indoors and outdoors. The effects of PM on lung function of college students were analyzed by using generalized estimating equation (GEE).
RESULTSAverage daily concentrations of indoor, outdoor PM2.5 in autumn were (91.3 ± 43.7) and (104.2 ± 49.4) µg/m(3) respectively, while in winter the concentrations of indoor and outdoor PM2.5 were (110.6 ± 42.3) and (143.5 ± 51.2) µg/m(3). The single pollutant model showed that in winter, the evening PEF decrement was significantly associated with increasing outdoor PM2.5. With an increase of 10 µg/m(3) outdoor PM2.5, the PEF measured in the evening decreased 1.27 L/min (95%CI: 0.02 - 2.52 L/min, respectively). Meanwhile, the results showed that 2-days lagged outdoor PM2.5 was also significantly associated with morning PEF. An increase of 10 µg/m(3) 2-days lagged outdoor PM2.5 caused the decrease of 1.82 L/min (95%CI: -3.53 - -0.11 L/min) of PEF measured in the morning. Controlling the influence of gaseous pollutants and building the two pollutants models, the results indicated that no significant changes of PEF of students being exposed to PM2.5 on same day (lag 0) were observed. However, under consideration of SO2 effect, significant association between an increase of 10 µg/m(3) 2-days lagged outdoor PM2.5 and changes of morning PEF (-1.81 L/min, 95%CI: -3.51 - -0.11 L/min, P = 0.037) was found. The relationship between changes of concentrations and PEF was not observed in autumn in this study.
CONCLUSIONIn our panel study, exposure to outdoor PM2.5 is significantly associated with PEF among college students in winter, but not in autumn.
