Journal of Shanghai Jiaotong University(Medical Science) 2006;0(07):-
Objective To evaluate the outcomes of maxillary protraction in the treatment of skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusions in early mixed dentition. Methods Fourteen patients with skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusions in early mixed dentition were treated with maxillary protraction for one year with oral active appliance bonded face mask.Cephalometric records were analyzed to assess the changes of maxillo-facial structure of the hard tissue before and after treatment. Results The anterior crossbite was unlocked in all the patients, and the maxilla moved downwards and forwards.Point A moved forwards, and angle SNA and ANB significantly increased. The mandible rotated downward and backward, and the Wits values significantly increased, which led to the correction of a skeletal class Ⅲ relationship.Maxillary length and protrusion significantly increased, and facial profile improved obviously. Conclusion Maxillary protraction works well in the treatment of skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusions in early mixed dentition, and can reduce the chances of later orthognathic surgery.

Objective To investigate the correlation between neural tube defects (NTDs) and DACT1 gene, and provide the basic data for disease diagnosis and genetic counseling. Methods Blood samples were obtained from 163 NTDs patients and 480 unrelated healthy individuals. Mutation detection of DACT1 gene and DNA direct sequencing was carried out by PCR amplification. Bioinformatics analysis of these mutated loci was performed. Results Six mutations were found in NTDs patients, including 4 missense mutations (p.R45W, p.D142G, p.N356K and p.V702G). But these mutations were not found in 480 healthy individuals. Three mutated amino acid residues (p.45R, p.142D and p.356N) were highly conservative in evolution, and the mutated carriers were female patients, and suffered from anencephaly. Conclusion DACT1 gene mutation may be a risk factor of NTDs in Han population of northern China.

BACKGROUND: Human tooth bone graft has been used for bone deficiency in dental implantation, but the strength and quality of newly formed bones with human tooth bone graft are in need of sound investigation. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the compressive strength of newly formed rabbit tibia after repair with human tooth bone graft. METHODS: Orthodontic teeth, loose molars, bicuspid premolars extracted from patients were taken to prepare human tooth bone grafts. Human tooth bone graft and bovine bone graft were independently placed into the rabbit tibia defects of 5 mm in diameter. Non-injured site served as control group. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The newly formed rabbit tibia after repair with human tooth bone graft had more intact microstructure and higher maximum compressive strength and stiffness relative to that after repair with bovine bone graft. These findings indicate human tooth bone graft is superior to bovine bone graft in the repair of tibia defects in rabbits.

Since Nature published the first report in 2002 on using immunodeficient mice as recipients and allogeneous or heterogeneous testes as donor tissues to study the ectopic development of spermatogenic cells, the technique has been widely applied in various species (including human). In comparison with other in vitro maturation methods for male germ cells, testicular allografting or xenografting technique has such advantages as similar environment for the development of germ cells in physiological conditions, and better reproducibility. Up to now, sperm has been successfully produced by this technique from the testicular tisues of the immature mouse, hamster, cat, rabbit, pig, goat, bovine and rhesus monkey, and their offspring have even been generated by ICSI technique using the mouse and rabbit sperm derived from testis grafts. This article comprehensively reviews the development of the technique by discussing the influencing factors on the germ cell development in grafts including the variety and age of donors, the sex, integrity and immunity of recipients, the graft location and grafting time. And the applications of the technique and the existing problems are discussed as well.

Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine 2012;32(4):490-493
OBJECTIVETo observe the effects of Qingyi II Recipe (QR) on the intestinal barrier function (IBF) of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) rats.
METHODSForty-eight SD rats were selected to prepare SAP model. After modeling, they were randomly divided into the model group and the QR treatment group, 24 in each group. Another 8 rats were selected as the sham-operation group. The intervention was started just when they came to resuscitation from anesthesia. Rats in the QR treatment group was administered with QR (1 mL/100 g) by gastrogavage, while an equal volume of normal saline was given to rats in the sham-operation group and the model group by gastrogavage. The gastrogavage was performed once every 6 h. Eight rats were selected from each group 6, 12, and 24 h after intervention. The ascites amount was measured after opening abdomens. The concentrations of serum diamine oxidase (DAO) and D-lactate were measured. Pathological changes of pancreas and ileum were observed. The pathological scoring of the pancreas was performed. The ileum were scanned by electron microscope.
RESULTSThere was no ascites in the sham-operation group. There was no obviously pathological abnormality in the pancreas or ileum. Compared with the sham-operation group, the ascites amount, serum DAO, D-lactate, and pathological scoring all increased at 6 h in the model group, showing statistical difference (P<0.05). In the model group, the serum DAO, D-lactate, and pathological scoring increased gradually at 6 -24 h with statistical difference (P<0.05). Results under microscope showed disarranged structure, interstitial edema, hemorrhage, a large amount of neutrophil infiltration, local foci or lamellar intestinal necrosis. The 24-h ascites amount increased more at 24 h than at 12 h in the model group with statistical difference (P<0.05). The serum D-lactate and patho- logical scoring increased gradually at 6 -24 h in the QR treatment group with statistical difference (P<0.05). The 24-h ascites amount and DAO increased more at 24 h than at 12 h in the model group with statistical difference (P<0.05). Compared with the model group at the same time point, each index decreased at 6 -24 h in the QR treatment group with statistical difference (P<0.05). Results under microscope showed edema and congestion of the intestinal mucosa tissue, little amount of neutrophil infiltration. But the degrees were milder when compared with those of the model group.
CONCLUSIONQR protected IBF of SAP rats.

OBJECTIVETo study the clinical effects of integrative Chinese and Western medicine in treating chronic urticaria and its impact on peripheral blood content of interleukin-10 (IL-10) and IL-8.
METHODSPatients were assigned to the treatment group and the control group according to their sequence of visiting. They were treated orally with levocetirizine hydrochloride 5 mg once a day, but additional Kangqian Decoction (a self-formulated Chinese herbal preparation consisted of thorowax root 15 g, divaricate saposhnikovia root 9 g, licorice root 15 g, moutan bark 15 g, red sage root 15 g, milkvetch root 30 g, and schisandra fruit 12 g, etc. ) was given to the treatment group one dose per day, for 2 weeks as one therapeutic course. The efficacy was evaluated after two courses of medication, and patients' IL-10 and IL-8 levels in the peripheral blood were determined before and after treatment.
RESULTSThe total effective rate in the treatment group and control group was 93.75% and 56.66% respectively with significance difference between them (P <0.01). After treatment, the level of serum IL-10 was significantly lower while that of IL-8 was significantly higher in the treatment group (2.96 +/- 1.66, 50.17 +/- 32.35) than that in the control group (4.77 +/- 2.99, 29.44 +/- 17.62) respectively (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONChronic urticaria was related to the immune unbalance of body. Integrative medicine could adjust immune function to display a quick, potent anti-inflammatory and anti-anaphylactic actions in treating chronic urticaria with less adverse reaction and low recurrent rate.
