Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice 2004;10(7):394-395
Objective To evaluate the cranioplasty with Titanium mesh. Methods Clinical studies of 110 cases who accepted cranioplasty with Titanium mesh (2000-2001) were reviewed retrospectively. Results A satisfactory moulding with no complication occurred in 91%(100/110). The most common recent complication of cranioplasty with Titanium was subcutaneous hematoma(19/110); the next was epidural hematoma(3/110), intracerebral hematoma(3/110) and brain contusion(1/110). 69 cases more than 1 year after cranioplasty were followed, no one appeared long term complications such as infection, exposure or mobilization of the mending material. Conclusion The results of cranioplasty with Titanium mesh are satisfactory, the recent complications of the operation are mainly related to incompletely hemostasis, the long term complication occurred rarely.

OBJECTIVETo compare the changes of digestive and absorptive functions in three different models of Pi-deficiency syndrome (PDS).
METHODSExperimental mice were divided into four groups, the control group(CG), the rhubarb group (RG), the exhaustion group (EG) and the over-exertion group(OG). Criteria including general physical signs, D-xylose excretion rate, serum amylase activity, velocity of stomach emptying and enterokinesia, serum gastrin content and indexes of organs were determined before and after treatment.
RESULTSDecrease of D-xylose excretion rate and increase of stomach emptying and enterokinesia velocity appeared in all the three PDS models. As compared with CG, changes of all indices in OG were significant, while the decreasing of spleen index and serum amylase activity in EG, and the changes of serum gastrin content and thymus index in RG were insignificantly different.
CONCLUSIONAll the changes in various criteria showed that PDS mice model established by over-exertion was superior to that established by frequently used methods as purging with rhubarb and exhausting by swimming.

In this study, the general bacterial probe and specific cellulolytic bacterial probes were used to quantify the bacteria in rumen. The total RNA were extracted and then hybridized with general bacterial probe after a dilution of concentration. The result showed that there was a high correlation between the hybridization signal and the dilution of total bacterial RNA. Based on the result above, the quantities of three cellulolytic bacteria in rumen sample were detected. The comparative RNA percentage of three cellulolytic bacteria to total bacterial RNA were similar to the previous reports. It can be concluded that the quantification of bacteria in rumen could be conducted by this approach, and which could be used in future research.

AIMTo study the effect of radix-astragali compound(RC) on muscle atrophy in tail-suspended rats. Muscle weight, fiber type distribution, cross-sectional area (CSA), and activity of myosin adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) in rat soleus muscle were investigated.
METHODSThe tail-suspended rats were subjected to a 14 days simulated weightlessness, during which period, RC or saltwater was given via intragastric instillation during tail suspension. The changes of soleus muscle weight were scaled by muscle-to-body weight ratio. The activities of myosin ATPase of muscle fibers were detected by method of Ca(2+) -ATPase.
RESULTSAfter a 14 days tail suspension it was found: in rats treated with RC, soleus muscle-to-body weight ratio rose by 33.33% (P < 0.01), both CSA of type I and II fiber drastically enhanced by(143.03%, P < 0.01; 83.25%, P < 0.01), the percentage of type I fiber significantly declined compared to the untreated rats.
CONCLUSIONRC is able to effectively prevent muscle atrophy caused by tail suspension and restrain the increase in the myosin ATPase activities caused by simulated weightlessness.

Objective To investigate the therapeutic method of metabolic acidosis in long-term sur- vival patients undergoing simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplantation. Methods A 45-year-old fe- male patient, who had undergone simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplantation(due to diabetic ne- phropathy and uremia)with bladder drainage 2 years before, developed severe metabolic acidosis, and thus underwent surgical conversion from bladder to ileal drainage. The procedure was as follows. The stoma of duo- denocystostomy was isolated and resected. The site of cystostomy was closed in two layers. The graft duode- num was then anastomosed to a loop of the recipient's ileum, which was proximal 40 cm from the ileocecum in a side-to-side manner. Results The metabolic acidosis resolved postoperatively. The patient received conventional immunosuppressants. The hospital stay was 30d.Follow-up of 4 years showed normal pancreas and kidney functions. Conclusions Conversion from bladder to ileal drainage is safe and effective for metabolic acidosis related to the exocrine secretions of bladder drained pancreas graft in simultaneous pancre- as and kidney transplant recipients.

Objective To define the maximum-tolerated dnse(MTD)and observe the side effect of escalating cisplatin with 5-fluorouracil in concurrent chemoradiotherapy for esophageal carcinoma in Chinese, with toxicity studied. Methods Previously untreated fifteen Chinese patients suffering from esophageal carcinoma received conventional fractionafiun radiotherapy, with 5 daily fractions of 2.0 Gy per week. The total radiation dose was 60 Gy.Concurrent chemotherapy dose escalation was given by the relatively safe and kidney-sparing modified Fibonacci sequence. The starting dose was cisplatin 37.5 mg/m~2 D1 and 5-fluorouracil 500 mg/m~2 D1-5, respectively. This regimen was repeated 4 times every 28 days.Escalation dose was eisplatin 7.5mg/m~2 and 5- fluorouracil 100mg/m~2.Every cohort contained at least 3 patients. If no dose-limiting toxicity(DLT)was observed, the next dose level was opened for entry. These courses were repeated until DLT appeared.MTD was declared as one dose level below which DLT appeared. Results DLT was defined as grade 3 radiation-induced esophngitis at the level of cisplatin 60 mg/m~2,5-fluorouracil 700 mg/m~2.MTD was defined as eisplafin 52.5 mg,/m~,5- fluorouracil 700 mg/m~2.The major side effect were radiation-induced esophagitis, leucopenia, nausea, vomiting and anorexia. Conclusion Maximun tolerated dose of cisplatin with 5-fluorouracil in concurrent chemoradiotherapy in the Chinese people with esophageal carcinoma were eisplatin 52.5 mg/m~2 D1,5-fluorouracil 700 mg/m~2 D1-5,repeated 4 times every 28 days.

Objective To compare and analyze the effect of prophylactic postoperative radiotherapy for esophageal carcinoma. Methods 102 such patients were treated with prophylactic radiotherapy after radical resection,to a total dose of 50-60 Gy.The extensive portal included supraclavicular region on both sides, entire mediastinum, the site of anastomosis and left gastric lymph node region in 43 patients. The re- gional portal range was different according to the different location of primary lesion in 59 patients. Results The 1-,3- and 5-year survival rate was 76%,51% and 43% respectively, with a median survival of 30 months. The 1-,3- and 5-year survival rate was 77%,52% and 41% in the extensive portal and 76%, 49% and 45% in the regional portal,respectively(P=0.884).According to multivariate analysis,N stage, number of metastatic lymph nodes and tumor length were independent prognostic factors. Conclusions Regional portal does not lower the survival rate when prophylactic postoperative radiotherapy is used in e- sophageal carcinoma.
