Objective To investigate the efficacy of repairing finger nail bed defects by split-thickness nail bed grafts in one stage, and evaluate the functional recovery of nail beds comprehensively. Methods From February 2000 to December 2003, 33 fingers with nail bed defect in 26 patients (7 thumbs, 13 index fingers, 9 middle fingers, 4 ring fingers) were repaired with middle thickness grafts of nail bed harvested from the residual nail beds of the same fingers or from nail beds of 1st, 2nd and 3rd toes. Brachial plexus block or regional anesthesia was used. When the area of nail bed defect area was less than one third of the nail, the graft was taken from the same finger under rubber tourniquet. In condition of the area of nail bed defect larger than one third of the nail beyond nail plica or two nail bed defects, the grafts were taken from the nail beds of 1st, 2nd and 3rd toes. Results In the study, there were 23 fingers (18 patients) with the nail bed defects area more than 5 mm and less than one third of the nail repaired with the grafts of the same finger nail; there were 10 fingers (8 patients) with the nail bed defects more than one third of the nail beyond the nail plica or two nail bed defects transplanted with toe nail bed. All patients were followed up from 6 months to 30 months with an average of 17 months, all grafts survived very well. No pain, no infection and obvious deformed growth of nail were found, and a sound recovery was obtained in all patients. Excellent and good rates were 87.9% in 23 patients with 29 fingers; poor rate was 12.1% in 3 patients with 4 fingers according to the criteria by L? Gui-xin. Conclusion The transplantation of middle split-thickness nail bed to repair nail bed defect is simple and easy to operate. The grafted nail can grow in good appearance, and the deformation rate is lower.

Objective To detect micronuclei (MN) induced by nickel chloride (NiCl2) using a flow cytometry-based method, so as to study the mutagenecity of this chemical. Methods The micronucleated reticulocytes (MN-RET) in peripheral blood of NIH mice exposed to 0.75 mg/kg colchicines (COL), 40.0 mg/kg of cyclophosphamide (CP) and 5.0, 10.0 and 20.0 mg/kg of NiCl2 were detected by a flow cytometry-based method, in which anti-CD71-FITC and PI were used to stain cells and malaria-infected erythrocytes were employed as biological standards of micronuclei to optimize cytometry. Results Although COL or CP induced significant increase in the frequency of MN-RET in peripheral blood, MN formation in peripheral reticulocytes was not significantly affected by exposing to different concentration of NiCl2. Conclusion The results of flow cytometric analysis in the present paper do not support that NiCl2 exposure may induce significant MN-RET increase in peripheral blood in NIH mice.

Objective To study the choice of initial operative approach for thyroid nodule and the necessity of reoperation after local excision of differentiated thyroid cancer. Methods Clinical data of 138 patients with differentiated thyroid cancer after local tumor excision had reoperation at our hospital during a period of four year were retrospectively reviewed. All the reoperations were bilateral thyroidectomy and cervical lymph node excision. Results There were 76.8% patients with residual cancer in thyroid and cervical lymph node. There were 23 patients(16.7%) with recurrent laryngeal nerve injury that included 22 cases with unilateral and 1 case with bilateral injury after the initial operation, and 19 of the 23 patients with recurrent laryngeal nerve injury recovered after nerve repair. After thyroid reoperation,3 cases(2.2%) had recurrent laryngeal nerve injury,2 cases(1.4%) had partial parathyroid gland injury,2 cases(1.4%) had superior laryngeal nerve injury, but there were no cases of esophageal injury or postoperative bleeding. Conclusions The incidence of residual cancer is high after local excision for differentiated thyroid cancer, therefore, reoperation with bilateral thyroidectomy and cervical lymph node excision is necessary.
6.Screening of Sponge Stelletta tennui Associated Anti-microbial Bacteria and Their Synergistic Effects
Microbiology 1992;0(04):-
A total of 104 marine bacterial strains were isolated from Stelletta tennui around Sanya area of South China Sea by dilution-plate method and were screened for anti-microbial activity on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureu, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Bacillus subtilis, Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans and Pacecilomyces variotii by agar diffusion, paper disc diffusion assay and cell concentration counts methods. It was found that 23 strains, which are 22.2% of the total isolated strains, have anti-microbial activities. Among the 23 strains, A05, A08, A72 and A75 were morphologically, physiologically and biochemically characterized and identified to be the genus Bacillus. At the same time, it was proved that there are positive and negative synergistic effects between or among active strains, e.g., as for A72-75 combination, an obvious enhanced anti-microbial activities on inhibiting Candida albicans and Pseudomomas fluorescens growth was observed than A72 or A75.
