Journal of Forensic Medicine 2014;30(2):114-116
OBJECTIVE:
To investigate the quantity and species distribution of diatoms in Chuanyang River of Pudong new area of Shanghai and provide references for the invesitigation of water body in forensic practice.
METHODS:
The water samples collected from 15 areas in Chuanyang River of Pudong new area in September 2012 were examined by microscope to identify the species of diatoms.
RESULTS:
Cyclotella and Pinnularia were found to be the dominant species within the 12 species of diatoms in Chuanyang River, which showed differences in species among the sections of Huangpu River, the center and the East China Sea.
CONCLUSION
The differences in subsectional distribution of diatom species in Chuanyang River may provide a new foundation for forensic identification in drowning cases especially in the determination of falling location.

Objective To investigate the effect of intrathecal(IT)different concentrations of ozone(O_3) on pain threshold, motor function and cerebral spinal fluid(CSF)malondialdehyde(MDA)concentration and superoxide dismutase(SOD)activity and determine if ozone is toxic to central nervous system(CNS).Methods Thirty New Zealand white rabbits of both sexes aged 3-5 months, weighing 2.5-3.0 kg were randomly divided in 5 groups(n=6 each):groupⅠcontrol;groupⅡpure O_2;groupⅢO_2-O_3 30;groupⅣO_2-O_3 50 and groupⅤO_2-O_3 80.The animals were anesthetized with intraperitoneal pentobarbital.Cerebello-medullary cistern was punctured for IT administration of O_2 and O_3.In groupⅡ2 ml of pure oxygen(O_2)(for medical use)was injected IT.In groupⅢ,ⅣandⅤ2 ml of ozone(O_3)30,50 and 80 mg?L~(-1) was injected IT respectively.Ozone was manufactured by ozone generator(Ozoneline Co,Italy). Before and one day after IT O_3 paw withdrawal latency to heat(PWHL)and to mechanical stimulation(yon Frey filament)(PWML)were measured and motor function was assessed(1=normal,4=severe motor dysfunction and weakness).CSF was obtained at 1,2,4 h after IT O_3 for determination of MDA concentration and SOD activity. Results IT administration of the 3 concentrations of ozone did not affect pain threshold and motor function, but significantly increased SOD activity.MDA concentration decreased significantly at 4 h after IT O_2 or ozone administration in groupⅡ,ⅢandⅣ,but increased significantly at 1 and 2 h after IT ozone in groupⅤ.SOD/MDA was significantly increased at 1,2 and 4h after IT ozone in groupⅢandⅣ,but decreased at 1 and 2 h after IT ozone in groupⅤ.Conclusion IT ozone is toxic to CNS.

Objective To investigate clinical significance of computed tomography (CT) scan in diagnosis of bronchial foreign body in children. Methods Twenty-one suspected children with bronchial foreign body were studied with spiral CT cross-section scan and coronal reconstruction and diagnosis was confirmed with bronchoscopy. Results The foreign body was displayed in all of 21 cases. CT scan showed foreign body was located in right main bronchial 12 cases, right middle bronchial 1 case, right inferior lobar bronchial 2 cases and left main bronchial 6 cases. Foreign bodies were extracted with bronchoscopy. Conclusion CT scan can display and locate accurately foreign body in bronchial of children, and has very important diagnostic value in patients having atypical histories, clinical and radiological findings.

To investigate the epidemic and evolutionary trends of enterovirus (EV) in the external environment of Yunnan Province, China, molecular typing was performed on 4 EV strains that were isolated from environmental sewage in Yunnan. The VP1 region of isolates was amplified by RT-PCR using universal enterovirus primers, and the amplified VP1 region was sequenced for GenBank BLAST search and genotype analysis. The 4 EV strains were identified as ECHO7. Their nucleotide and amino acid homologies with the VP1 sequences of 68 ECHO7 strains retrieved from GenBank were measured by Mega software analysis. Our findings showed that ECHO7 strains from environmental sewage and population samples were in different evolutionary branches. These strains showed typical geographical and temporal differences; In addition, there were different transmission chains at the same time and in the same area. ECHO7 strains isolated from sewage water and patients with acute flaccid paralysis during the same period in Yunnan belonged to different clusters and evolved at different speeds. Special concerns are needed for this problem. Continuous molecular biological surveillance of human EV in the external environment of Yunnan will provide strong support for early warning of EV diseases.

The present study aims to predict the action targets of antidepressant active ingredients of Xiaoyaosan to understand the "multi-components, multi-targets and multi-pathways" mechanism. Using network pharmacology, the reported antidepressant active ingredients in Xiaoyaosan (saikosaponin A, saikosaponin C, saikosaponin D, ferulic acid, Z-ligustilide, atractylenolide I, atractylenolide II, atractylenolide III, paeoniflorin, albiflorin, liquiritin, glycyrrhizic acid and pachymic acid), were used to predict the targets of main active ingredients of Xiaoyaosan according to reversed pharmacophore matching method. The prediction was made via screening of the antidepressive drug targets approved by FDA in the DrugBank database and annotating the information of targets with the aid of MAS 3.0 biological molecular function software. The Cytoscape software was used to construct the Xiaoyaosan ingredients-targets-pathways network. The network analysis indicates that the active ingredients in Xiaoyaosan involve 25 targets in the energy metabolism-immune-signal transmutation relevant biological processes. The antidepressant effect of Xiaoyaosan reflects the features of traditional Chinese medicine in multi-components, multi-targets and multi-pathways. This research provides a scientific basis for elucidation of the antidepressant pharmacological mechanism of Xiaoyaosan.

Although traditional tooth preparation techniques (e.g., depth-groove-guided and index-guided techniques) are designed to improve preparation precision, the results are unsatisfactory because of the lack of proper estimating tools. This study proposed a novel technique, in which relevant details for preparation of drilling holes are provided and corresponding depth is estimated using a quantitive bur under a microscope. This technique offers a viable option for precise tooth preparation.
