Objective To analyze the clinical performance of hepatitis C virus antibody detection by bi-direetional lateral flow method and evaluate whether the bi-directional lateral flow method is suitable for clinical use. Methods Four hurdred and nineteen samples were collected and tested anti-HCV antibodies with hi-directional lateral flow and CMIA kits. These samples contain:107 patients with confirmed hepatitis C virus infection,162 patients with other diseases than hepatitis C virus infection and 150 healthy controls. Two positive reference materials for ELISA were tested at the same time. The testing results were analyzed with statistical methods. Results Compared with RIBA,the sensitivity and specificity of bi- directional lateral flow method were 98.1% and 99.7% respectively, the agreement rate with CMIA was 99.0%.The reproducibility percentage of the+/-20% at the cutoff concentration were 97% and 99% respectively. No crossing reaction with hepatitis A/B/D/E virus infection and HIV-1/2 positive individuals were found in the tests. Conclusion The hi-directional lateral flow method for HCV detection shows good clinical performance and is suitable for clinical use.

Objective To investigate the significance of acute physiology and chronic health evaluation Ⅱ (APACHE Ⅱ) scoring system in evaluating elderly patients with hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state. Methods Elderly patients with hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state were enrolled in the study from January 2003 to May 2008. The patients were divided into two groups according to the outcome: death group and survival group. APACHE Ⅱ scoring system was used on the day of admission and the scores were compared in the two groups. The risk factors for death were evaluated by logistic regression analysis. Results Forty patients were registered including 10 cases in death group and 30 cases in survival group. The mortality rate was 25%. There were no differences in blood glucose, serum sodium, blood osmotic pressure, serum creatinine and hemoglobin between two groups before the treatment (t=-1.50~1.53, all P>0.05). The APACHE Ⅱ scores were significantly higher in death group than in survival group on the day of admission(30.1±5.4 vs. 22.9±3.9,Z=-4.08, P<0.01). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that APACHE Ⅱ scores on the day of admission were the independent risk factor for death. Age, sex, blood glucose, effective blood osmotic pressure, serum creatinine and hemoglobin were not related to mortality rate. Conclusions APACHE Ⅱ scoring system is a helpful method for evaluating the severity and outcome of patients with hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state.

· AIM: To investigate the complications of intravitreal triamsinolone acetonide (TA) injection in vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).· METHODS: From February 2005 to January 2007, 18patients (18 eyes) with PDR who were injected with TA in vitrectomy were observed retrospectively after surgery.· RESULTS: During a postoperative follow-up period of 3 to 6 months (mean 4.6 months), some complications including deposit of TA granules on the macular region and surface of the retina (3 eyes), postoperative vitreous hemorrhage (3eyes), elevated intraocular pressure (2 eyes) and pseudohypopyon (1 eye)were observed.· CONCLUSION: The complications after surgery such as deposit of TA granules on the macular region and surface of the retina and pseudohypopyon could be cured without any special treatment. All eyes with elevated intraocular pressure after surgery were controlled by drug. Re-operation may be an effective method for patients with unabsorbable vitreous hemorrhage after vitrectomy.

Objective To evaluate the outcomes of maxillary protraction in the treatment of skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusions in early mixed dentition. Methods Fourteen patients with skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusions in early mixed dentition were treated with maxillary protraction for one year with oral active appliance bonded face mask.Cephalometric records were analyzed to assess the changes of maxillo-facial structure of the hard tissue before and after treatment. Results The anterior crossbite was unlocked in all the patients, and the maxilla moved downwards and forwards.Point A moved forwards, and angle SNA and ANB significantly increased. The mandible rotated downward and backward, and the Wits values significantly increased, which led to the correction of a skeletal class Ⅲ relationship.Maxillary length and protrusion significantly increased, and facial profile improved obviously. Conclusion Maxillary protraction works well in the treatment of skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusions in early mixed dentition, and can reduce the chances of later orthognathic surgery.

Bulletin of The Academy of Military Medical Sciences 2010;34(1):1-4
Biotechnology supremacy is a newly-advanced power theory. It is a superior dominance of military biotechnological application based on the microcosm of life structure within a certain period of time. The advancement of biotechnology supremacy and modern biotechnology has created the concept of bio-micro-frontier, which involves information and defense resources of all living ultra-micro-organisms with national and regional characteristics. Being feasible both in theory and practice, the implementation of bio-micro-frontier system is strategically important. This article explores the implementation of bio-micro-frontier in terms of strategy and tactics, which will add a unique dimension to future military transformation and active defense.

China Biotechnology 2006;0(10):-
Cyclodextrin(CD) is gradually applied in the nonviral gene vector system, due to its biocompatibility and flexibility of tailing via structural modification, polymerization or supramolecular combination. The ideas and research progress of the CD,its low molecular derivatives,CD polymers and CD supramolecular combination in the field of norviral gene vectros were reviewed, and their "structure-safety-transfection efficiency" relationships were discussed.
