Objective To determine the effects of a 12-week aerobic exercise program on brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity ( baPWV) in sedentary and under-exercised healthy older adults. Methods A total of 35 sedentary and unfit but healthy older adults with mean age of 74.7 years were randomly assigned to a progressively increased intensity aerobic exercise group ( n = 17) or a control group ( n = 18). The exercise group performed aerobic exercise 3 times each week for 12 weeks. The control group didn't participate in the exercise program. Heart rate, blood pressure and baPWV were evaluated at admission to the aerobic exercise program and at the end of the 12 weeks in both groups. Results The mean baPWV in the aerobic exercise group decreased from 15.88 m/s to 14.62 m/s after exercise, a significant reduction. Blood pressure in the exercise group showed a decrease which was not significant. No significant improvement was identified in the control group. Conclusions Only 12 weeks of aerobic exercise with progressively increased intensity can improve arterial elasticity in sedentary and unfit older adults.

Objective To estimate the value of neck circumference in diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. Methods We analyzed the neck circumference of 523 volunteers and the occurrence of metabolic syndrome among them. Then we updated and revalued their data after follow-up for 1.5 years, meanwhile, we evaulated the value of Body Mass Index (BMI) and neck circumference in predicting metabolic syndrome. Results The increase of neck circumference was closely related to the occurrence of metabolic syndrome , and this tendency continued in the follow-up. Compared with BMI , neck circumference was sensitive in identifying the patients of metabolic syndrome. Conclusion Neck circumference has great value in diagnosis and treatment of metabolic syndrome.

Basic & Clinical Medicine 2009;29(12):1334-1336
The aquaporins (AQPs) are small, integral-membrane proteins which selectively transport water across cell plasma membranes. AQPs are over-expressed in tumor cells of different origins, particularly aggressive tumors. AQPs-expressing cancer cells show enhanced migration in vitro and greater local tumor invasion, tumor cell extrava-sations, and metastases in vivo. AQPs inhibition will provide a help for tumor therapy.

Objective To explore the clinical value of wave intensity(WI) curve of the carotid artery in patients with thyroid diseases and its value in evaluating cardiovascular function. Methods All 85 patients with thyroid diseases, including 45 hyperthyroidism and 40 hypothyroidism, were enrolled as case groups, while 270 healthy volunteers were considered as control. All the case groups and control were taken WI test under quiescent condition, and six continuous curves of the carotid artery diameter changes were recorded. Then the parameters of accelerating wave intensity (W1), decelerating wave intensity ( W2), negative area (NA) ,corrected R-W1 and W1-W2,elasticity modulus(Eρ) ,stiffness index(β) ,arterial compliance(AC) and pluse wave velocity(PWV) were calculated. Relationship between those indices and FT3 ,FT4 and TSH were analyzed by Pearson correlative analysis. Results The WI curve appeared differently among different groups, but the vessel elasticity indices did not have statistical significance. Correlation only existed between FT3 and part of the WI parameters. FT3 positively correlated with W1 ( r = 0. 951, P <0.01 ), NA( r =0.813, P <0.01) and W1-W2' ( r = 0. 887, P <0.01 ). And R-W1 ' negatively correlated with FT3( r =-0.878, P <0.01 ). Conclusions The WI curve could represent different function status of thyroid, and could be considered as a noninvasive examination for further clinical research, which may help explain the corresponding cardiovascular changes.

Objective To evaluate the diabetes self-management program based on Chinese local patients in Nanjing community. Methods From April 2014 to June 2014, diabetes patients were recruited through health records system screening in the community health service centers, letter invitation, poster announcements at communities, and telephone notification. A total of 53 self-management groups were established. Nanjing diabetes self-management program included six 1-1.5 hours sessions scheduled on consecutive weeks, based on the blueprint of Shanghai Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) developed at Stanford University. Baseline and three-month later interviews were conducted respectively. Results A total of 636 patients were recruited and agreed to enter CDSMP; 603 completed the 6-session activities, with the response rate being 94.8%. Compared to baseline, nine of the patients' the awareness rate of diabetes-related knowledge, six of self-management behaviors, the scores of quality of life in physical component summary [(47.51 ± 9.47) vs. (49.10 ± 8.27) points, t=6.170, P=0.000] and mental component summary [(47.09±11.95) vs. (49.13±10.74) points, t=5.157, P=0.000] were all higher after three months (all P values<0.05). Three months after implementation, the level of systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose and total cholesterol decreased respectively by (1.42±0.52) mmHg (1 mmHg=0.133 kPa), (0.98 ± 0.34) mmHg, (0.66 ± 0.16) mmol/L, (0.15 ± 0.56) mmol/L,the differences were statistically significant (tpaired values were 3.935, 2.030, 4.889, 4.899, all P values<0.05). Conclusion The diabetes self-management program based on Chinese local patients for Nanjing may improve patients' awareness rate of diabetes-related knowledge, self-management behavior, the quality of life, and health status. CDSMP could be applied effectively in Nanjing.
