Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2008;12(19):3786-3788
AIM: To investigate the clinical use and effect of a removable obturator made of elastic bionic materials in treating food impaction.METHODS: The removable obturator made of elastic denture materials were applied to 27 patients who suffered either mixed or horizontal food impaction and were admitted in Guilin Stomatological Hospital from October 2006 to April 2007. At weeks 4 and 12 following treatment, all patients were surveyed by questionnaires to investigate wearing comforts, and the histocompatibility of the obturator was simultaneously evaluated. Periodontal indexes were recorded before treatment, at weeks 4 and 12 after treatment. X-ray radiography was also performed before treatment and 12 weeks after treatment to compare alveolar condition.RESULTS: All the 27 patients were involved in the result analysis. They were all satisfied with the obturator after twelve weeks treatment, and the questionnaire showed 96.3%-100% satisfactions from the patients. The measuring results of periodontal indexes at different periods of the treatment showed no statistical significance. There were no remarkable changes in the tooth mobility and X-ray image analysis before treatment and 12 weeks after treatment.CONCLUSION: With good histocompatibility, the removable obturator made of elastic denture materials has been proved to be well histocompatible, acceptable and effective for the patients who suffer from food impaction in the short term.

To evaluate the effects of silicone points polishing on plaque index(PI) and sulcus bleeding index(SBI) after ultrasonic scaling. Forty patients with periodontal diseases were selected for ultrasonic scaling. After scaling, unilateral teeth were randomly assigned for silicone points polishing. PI and SBI were used to evaluate the effects of silicone points polishing. Silicone points polishing significantly reduced PI 12 weeks after scaling. Both in the polishing group and the control group, SBI decreased after scaling. The SBI in the polishing group was significantly lower than that in the control group in the 24 weeks. Silicone points polishing can effectively increase the smoothness of tooth and enhance the effects of uhrosonic scaling.

ObjectiveTo explore the influence of cluster needling of scalp acupuncture combined with rehabilitation techniques on cognition dysfunction in patients with cerebral infarction.Methods60 patients with cerebral infarction following cognitive impairment were randomly divided into 3 groups: Group A (the cluster needling of scalp acupuncture), group B (cognition training) and group C (cluster needling of scalp acupuncture combined with cognition training). All groups received routine neuropathic treatment. All patients were assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) before and a month after treatment. The therapeutic effect was observed by change of P300 latency and solid contents of blood plasma cortisol a month after the treatment.ResultsThere was significant difference in the score of MMSE, P300 latency, and solid contents of blood plasma cortisol in 3 groups before and after the treatment(P<0.05). Compared to groups A and B, group C got a higher score of MMSE, shorter latency of P300 and lower solid contents of blood plasma cortisol (P<0.01). ConclusionCluster needling of scalp acupuncture combined with cognition training may reduce solid contents of blood plasma cortisol and improve cognition function in patients with cerebral infarction.

BACKGROUND:The differentiation of neural stem cells (NSCs) is a hot research. Whether brain-derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF) can induce the differentiation of NSCs into neurons has not been detailed studied. OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effect of different concentrations of BDNF on the differentiation of NSCs from adult rat hippocampus into neurons in the medium with epidermal growth factor. DESIGN:A controlled study. SETTING:Department of Human Anatomy, China Medical University. MATERIALS:The experiment was performed at the Neurotomia Laboratory of China Medical University in August 2007. NSCs isolated from hippocampus of adult SD rats were inoculated in a serum-free medium. Three clean adult SD rats (200-250 g each) were provided by Laboratory Animal Department of China Medical University. Dispositions to the rats were consistent with ethical standards of animals. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) and BDNF were bought from R&D Company. METHODS:①NSCs obtained from rat hippocampus were cultured in the serum-free medium containing basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), EGF and B27. ②Single cell clone was obtained via limited dilution for the fourth passage of cells. Identification of NSCs for the passage of cells from monoclonal spheres was performed by Nestin immunocytochemistry. Neurons and astroglial cells were identified by immunocytochemistry for neuron specific enolase (NSE) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) a week after differentiation. ③Differentiation for the monoclonal spheres was done to appraisal the proportion of neurons. NSCs were divided for several groups containing 0 μg/L, 50 μg/L, 100 μg/L, 150 μg/L, and 200 μg/L groups according to the doses of BDNF. EGF was added in the media of each group. Immunocytochemistry for NSE was done a week later to count the positive cells. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Proportion of neurons differentiated from NSCs.RESULTS:①NSCs immunocytochemical staining showed that Nestin was positive in monoclonal spheres, and NSE and GFAP were positive in differentiated cells. ②The proportion of differentiation from NSCs into neurons was significantly higher in groups treated with 50 μg/L and 100 μg/L BDNF compared to other groups(t=2.502-5.025, P < 0.05), but there was no significant difference between 50 μg/L and 100 μg/L BDNF groups(P > 0.05). Moreover, no significant difference was detected among 0 μg/L, 150 μg/L and 200 μg/L BDNF groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION:The optimal concentration of BDNF is 50 μg/L for differentiation from NSCs into neurons while the concentration of EGF is 20 μg/L.
