1.Research advances on upper airway morphology measurement in patients with cleft lip and palate
Journal of Shanghai Jiaotong University(Medical Science) 2017;37(5):712-714
Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is one of common congenital malformations. The evaluation of upper airway morphology using two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) imaging data for CLP patients has important clinical significance. Studies have adopted various measurement methods,in which different anatomical landmarks and reference planes are used in 2D cephalometric measurement. Shooting positioning for cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), measurement software, reference plane, landmark selection, and measurement method in 3D studiesare also different. Currently, comparison is unable to be performed across different studies due to various measurement methods and measurement standards. This article reviews studies on upper airway morphology measurement in CLP patients.
2.Tissue-engineered scaffold preparation using three-dimensional printing technology:a retrospective study on bone repair
Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2017;21(10):1611-1616
BACKGROUND: The tissue-engineered scaffold, as a substitute of autogenous bone graft, plays an important role in bone repair. In the meanwhile, three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has obtained more attention because of its accurate adjustment.OBJECTIVE: To review the in vitro or in vivo studies on the 3D-printed scaffolds applied in bone repair, thus providing basis for clinical research.METHODS: The first author searched the PubMed database using the English keywords of tissue engineering, bone,three-dimensional printing, scaffold for pertinent articles addressing 3D-printed tissue-engineered scaffolds.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: There are plenty of studies on 3D-printed tissue-engineered scaffolds, and recent research focuses on the material selection and surface modification. The appropriate porosity is vital, and with the development of manufacturing technology, each property of the scaffold is improved, and composite materials prevail gradually. All above improvements enhance the mechanical property and promote cell adhesion and proliferation.Furthermore, the surface modification promotes the implant-bone interaction. In vivo and in vitro research both indicate that composite materials with the surface coating of bone induction can improve the scaffold performance and osteogenesis.

Objective To explore the expression of protease activated receptors (PARs) on human monocytes. Methods Flow cytometry and RT - PCR was used to detect the expressions of PARs on human monocytes that purified by MACS. Results FACS analysis showed that monocytes expressed PAR - 1 , PAR - 3 , PAR - 4, but not PAR - 2.RT - PCR revealed that monocytes expressed PAR - 1 and PAR -3, but not PAR -2 and PAR -4 mRNA. Conclusion PARs is expressed on human monocyte cells, which may facilitate further investigation of the potential functions of PARs on monocytes.

Objective To explore the clinical outcome of atlantoaxial pedicle screw instrument in treatment of extension-type odontoid fracture combined with aflantoaxial subluxation. Methods From December 2002 to December 2006, seven patients with extension-type odontoid fracture combined with at-lantoaxial subluxation were reduced and fixed with atlantoaxial pedicle screw instrument of Vertex system under general anesthesia. There were five males and two females, at mean age of 39.2 years (range 21-59 years). All odontoid fractures were fresh type Aderson Ⅱ. JOA scores of spinal core function was 8.6-14.9 (average 10.7) preoperatively. The X-ray examination, CT scanning and skull traction were performed in all patients preoperatively. Results There found no severe complications such as injuries of vertebral artery, nerve root and spinal cord postoperatively. All patients obtained complete reduction and healing of the fracture and dislocation. The mean off-bed time was four days (3-6 days) after opera-tion. A follow-up for 12-36 months (average 22 months) in all patients showed that the clinical symptom was improved significantly six months postoperatively and that all screws were in proper position verified by X-ray and CT scanning. All patients obtained solid bony union on radiographs, with no loosing or breakage of instrument. The postoperative JOA scores was 13.5-16.9 (average 15.8). Conclusions Allantoaxial pedicle screw fixation has advantages of intraoperative reduction, reliable fixation and high fusion rate and can be used as an effective method for extension-type odontoid fracture combined with at-lantoaxial subluxation.
