Object To explore, on the whole, the anticancer activity and mechanism of the aqueous extract of Ruixiang Langdu (Stellera chamaejasme L.) (SCLA). Methods Mice were given different i.g. doses of SCLA and their serum collected at different intervals after drug administration. The effects of the serum on the proliferation of mouse L 1210 leukemic cells were observed with MTT assay, clone formation and incorporation of [ 3H] TdR into DNA of the cells. Results Serum SCLA collected 1, 2, 4, 8 h after administration of 3, 6, and 12 g/kg SCLA showed significant decrease of MTT formazans and clone formation. Serum SCLA collected 2 h after drug administration showed more strong inhibition of cancer cell proliferation. It also inhibited the incorporation of [ 3H] TdR into DNA of L 1210 cells. Conclusion SCLA showed a remarkable inhibitory effect on proliferation and DNA synthesis of cancer cells cultured in vitro, which may be the main anticancer mechanisms of SCLA.

OBJECTIVE: To review the pathogenesis of diabetes under the guidance of the theories of neuroendocrine immunomodulation(NIM) network combined with the understanding of diabetes in traditional Chinese medicine.DATA SOURCES: Computer was used to search for the articles published from January 1980 to January 2005, with key words of "diabetes mellitus, pathogenesis, neuroendocrine immunomodulation, and traditional Chinese medicine " and the language of the papers was limited to "English". Also, computer and manual search for the articles in NLW and CNKI data banks from January 1990 to January 2005 were made with the language of the papers being limited to "Chinese" and key words of "diabetes, pathogenesis, neuroendocrine immunomodulation, traditional Chinese medicine" . Manual search was made for book chapters on the treatment of diabetes by traditional Chinese medicine and papers on the relation of diabetes with neuroendocrine immunoregulation network published after 1980.STUDY SELECTION: A rough check was made firstly to the materials to choose the articles on diabetes and the relationship with neuroendocrine immunoregulation network. Inclusion criteria: ① randomized clinical trial (RCT), single-, double- or non-blinded methods were used; ②non-randomized controlled trial; ③ anterior-posterior controlled trial. Exclusion criteria: repeated studies were excluded.DATA EXTRACTION: Thirty-three articles on pathogenesis of diabetes were obtained and among them 21 were consistent with the above criteria and 12 were excluded for repetition of the same studies.DATA SYNTHESIS: Twenty-one articles on the relation of the pathogenesis of diabetes with neuroendocrine immunoregulation and with the traditional Chinese medicine were analyzed to investigate the internal relations of the three.CONCLUSION: Diabetes mellitus is induced by the interaction between genetic and environmental factors, and the imbalance among insulin, counterregulatory hormones and other factors such as hypothalamic pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, thymus gland in neuroendocrine immunomodulation (NIM) network. The authors propose that the NIM network theory might be as a bridge to link modern medicine and the traditional Chinese medicine that is helpful to understand the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus.CONCLUSION: Diabetes mellitus is induced by the interaction between genetic and environmental factors, and the imbalance among insulin, counterregulatory hormones and other factors such as hypothalamic pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, thymus gland in neuroendocrine immunomodulation (NIM) network. Objective To clarify the temperature curve of the irradiation target area, its adjacent tissue and the whole body during extracorpereal microwave irradiation, then to compare and optimize different irradiation models. Methods Different parts of the chest of adult New Zealand white rabbit were irradiated using different extracorporeal microwave irradiation models. The temperature of the irradiated skin, the subcutaneous and deep parts, the adjacent tissues and the anus was measured. The experiment was bi-factor and multi-level designed according to the repeatedly measured data and the rabbits was divided into group a,b,c and d. Results The increase rate of the surface temperature in the dorsal lung was similar between group d and group b1(F=10.04,P<0.01). However, the increase rate of the surface temperature in the ventral lung of group d was lower, and the mean temperature of this site measured 10 minutes later was also lower than group b1(F=10.04,P<0.01). The increase rate of the rectal temperature of group d was higher, and the mean rectal temperature tested 10 minutes later was also higher than group b1(F=7.04,P<0.01). Conclusions Multi-array irradiation could achieve satisfactory irradiation depth and appropriate therapeutic temperature. Well controlled extracorporeal microwave irradiation under is an ideal thermotherapy method.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2013;30(1):16-21
Diaphragmatic electromyographic (EMGdi) signal is a weak biological signal, which contains some significant physiological information of our body respiration system and is susceptible to strong electrocardiography (ECG) signal interference. Based on wavelet transform and theory of information entropy, a new wavelet energy entropy threshold algorithm to remove ECG interference is proposed in this paper. On the base of analysis of wavelet coefficients of each scale, the method sees the information of each scale as a single signal source, equalizes it byzones, and then divides the energy entropy into two categories (i. e., high energy entropy and low energy entropy) through the distribution characteristics of energy entropy of each zone to conduct absolute mean value threshold. In addition, the denoised signal is reconstructed by wavelet coefficients processed. The experimental results showed that the method removed the ECG signal in EMGdi effectively and reserved the available characteristics of EMGdi better.
