Objective To evaluate the diagnostic level of infantile vitamin B_1 deficiency encephalopathy. Methods Clinical featuresand CT images in 45 cases of infantile vitamin B_1 deficiency encephalopathy proved by clinical treatment and follow-up were analyzedretrospectively. Results CT images depicted bilateral symmetrical low-density regions in the lentiform nucleus and the head of caudatenucleus in all 45 cases. The regions were reniform, upsiloid, butterfly or oval.Bilateral symmetrical low-densities of frontal, temporal or parietal lobes were found in some cases.Other CT findings included extensions of longitudinal fissures, lateral fissures and cerebral grooves.Experimental treatments of vitamin B_1 made remarkable clinical improvements. Conclusion CT scanning is extremely useful in thediagnosis of infantile vitamin B_1 deficiency encephalopathy.

International Eye Science 2015;(2):223-227
Age-related macular degeneration ( AMD ) is a kind of age-related blinding degenerative fundus lesions, totally about 30 million patients suffering from AMD all over the world, with about 500 000 people blind for it yearly. As the development of economy and the aging of the population intensified, incidence of AMD indicates a trend of rising year by year, being the third major cause of blindness in our country. At present, the pathogenesis of AMD is not fully clear, as reported it may be related to oxidative stress, inflammatory immune response, VEGF and genetic manipulation. Clinical treatments mainly include photodynamic therapy, drug therapy, radiation therapy, laser photocoagulaory operation, the pupil warm treatments, Chinese medicine and intravitreous injection VEGF antagonists such as Ranibizumab, Conbercept and so on. ln this issue, we mainly expound on the progress in the epidemiological studies of AMD, especially elaborate the progress made on genetic manipulation in recent years.

Objective:To investigate the influence of chronic kidney disease(CKD),including slight renal damages,on prognosis of coronary artery disease(CAD).Methods: A retrospective study was performed in 732 patients who visited our Cardiology Department and Cardiothoracic Surgery Department in 2000-2004.All patients suspected of CAD underwent a selective coronary angiography.Five hundred and seventy-nine patients with established diagnosis of CAD were followed up and their cardiovascular events(angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, recurrent myocardial infarction, heart failure, stroke, death, etc.) were recorded.Patients with CAD were divided into normal, slight, moderate, and severe groups according to the degree of renal function damages. The influences of different degrees of renal damages on the prognosis of CAD were compared. Results: There were obvious differences in the morbidities of angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, recurrent myocardial infarction, heart failure, stroke, etc.in CAD patients with different degrees of renal function damages. The worse the renal function, the higher the incidences of angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, recurrent myocardial infarction, heart failure and stroke, etc((P

AIM: To examine the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity by doxycycline (Doxy) and its effect on vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) proliferation, neointimal hyperplasia and vascular remodeling. METHODS: The model of rat common carotid artery injury was established by balloon-dilatation. Doxy was administered to the animals of treatment group at dose of 30 mg?kg -1?d -1. The activity of MMPs in the tissue of injured carotid arteries was measured by gelatin zymography. The thickness and area of neointimal, lumen area and the proliferation of SMCs were measured by histological and morphometric analysis. RESULTS: 1. After Doxy treatment, the activity of MMP-9 in the carotid arteries was reduced by 26.3% and 34.5% compared to that in rats without Doxy treatment at 24 hours and 3 days after balloon injury, respectively (P

AIM: To investigate the incidence of trachoma in children aged 1 to 9y in Hainan Province and determine high-risk trachoma endemic and non-endemic areas in Hainan, and thus provide evidence for developing trachoma control and prevention therapy.METHODS:The areas of investigation were chosen on the basis of past literatures, expert interviews and survey on the spot.In 2013, Hainan Provincial Office of Blindness Prevention carried out the survey in 7 counties including Dongfang City, Wuzhishan City, Ledong County, Baisha County, Baoting County, Lingao County and Changjiang County. In these districts, 356 pupils including 192 boys and 164 girls were examined, their age ranging from 1 to 9 and their average age being 7 years old.The targeted students received the trachoma rapid assessment by the adoption of simplified trachoma classification system which was recommended by the World Health Organization.RESULTS: No case of active trachoma was found among the 356 students.CONCLUSION:The prevalence rate of trachoma in children under 9 years is less than 5% in Hainan Province.Active trachoma is not a public health issue in Hainan Province.

The effects of dietary supplementation with Clostridium butyricum on growth performance and humoral immune response in Miichthys miiuy were evaluated. One hundred and fifty Miichthys miiuy weighing approximately 200-260 g were divided into five groups and reared in 15 tanks with closed circuiting culture system. The animals were fed 5 diets: basal diet only (control) or supplemented of the basal diet with C. butyricum at doses of 10(3) (CB1), 10(5) (CB2), 10(7) (CB3) or 10(9) (CB4) CFU/g. Compared with the control, the serum phenoloxidase activity was significantly increased by the supplementation (P<0.05), acid phosphatases activity was increased significantly (P<0.05) at the doses of 10(9) CFU/g. Serum lysozyme activity peaked at dose of 10(7) CFU/g and in the skin mucus at dose of 10(9) CFU/g. Immunoglobulin M level in the serum and skin mucus was increased except at dose of 10(3) CFU/g (P<0.05). The growth at the dose of 10(9) CFU/g was higher than that of the control (P<0.05). It is concluded that supplementation of C. butyricum can mediate the humoral immune responses and improve the growth performance in Miichthys miiuy.
