Objective To assess the performance capability of syphilis serology among STI laborato-ries in Guangdong Province. Methods Positive and negative sera samples were prepared and delivered toSTI laboratories. Non-treponemal and treponemal quantitative and qualitative tests were performed with these samples based on standardized procedures. Quality and proficiency of syphilis serology among these labora-tories were evaluated. Results A total of 225 STI laboratories in Guangdong Province participated in this survey, 3696 serological tests for syphilis were performed from 2004-2006. The outcomes showed that the total reproducibility among participating laboratories increased from 82.5% in 2004 to 90.0% in 2006 (x2 =16.8, P < 0.05), and the percentage of laboratories with a performance level higher than the provincial average level rose from 64.7% in 2004 to 76.8% in 2006. The total reproducibility was 95.5% for non-treponemal qualitative tests,95.0% for treponemal qualitative tests, 82.1% for non-treponemal quantitative tests, and 81.1% for treponemal quantitative tests. The false-negativity and false-positivity rates were 4.7% and 4.0%,respectively, for non-treponemal qualitative tests, and 7.2% and 0.4%, respectively, for treponemal qualitative tests. Conclusions It is important to do capability building and improve the performance of STI laborato-ries, in order to prevent and control syphilis.

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of surgical retrieval of testicular spermatozoa, and to present the preliminary results of the retrieved testicular spermatozoa used in intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) for treatment of non obstructive azoospermic infertility. Methods Forty nine cases of non obstructive azoospermia underwent open testicular biopsy and diagnostic testicular sperm extraction (TESE).Those who had sperms in diagnostic TESE underwent ICSI at least 3 months later. Results Sperms were detected in diagnostic TESE in 12 cases (24.9%). The testicular volume,FSH level and testicular pathology did not accurately predict the presence or absence of sperm in testes.Seven (87.5%) of 8 cases had sperm in re TESE, which were used in their ICSI cycles, resulting in 3 clinical pregnancies. Conclusions The diagnostic TESE should be performed to determine the presence or absence of testicular spermatozoa in testicular failure before ICSI,and the surgically retrieved testicular spermatozoa can be adopted in ICSI for treatment of non obstructive azoospermic infertility.

Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of heat-sensitive point moxibustion plus manipulative reduction in treating thoracic facet joint disorder. Method A single-blind randomized controlled trial was carried out. Eighty-two patients meeting the criteria were randomly allocated to an observation group of 42 cases and a control group of 40 cases. The observation group received heat-sensitive point moxibustion plus manipulative reduction and the control group, TDP plus manipulative reduction. Both groups were treated five times a week, five times as a course for a total of two courses (including the patients cured after less than two courses). The therapeutic effects were evaluated by using the McGill Pain Questionnaire the as the observation index, comparing pre-/post-treatment Pain Rating Index (PRI) scores, Visual Analogous Scale (VAS) scores and Present Pain Intensity (PPI) scores and referring to the Criteria of the Diagnosis of and the Therapeutic Effect on Syndromes in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Result After treatment, the PRI, VAS and PPI scores decreased significantly in both groups (P<0.01) and were lower in the observation group than in the control group (P<0.01). The cure rate was 57.1% (24/42) in the observation group, which was significantly higher than 27.5% in the control group (11/40,P<0.01). The total efficacy rate was 95.2% (40/42) in the observation group, which was significantly higher than 80.0% in the control group (32/40,P<0.01). Conclusion Heat-sensitive point moxibustion plus manipulative reduction has a very good therapeutic effect on thoracic facet joint disorder. The effect is significantly better than that in the control group.
