OBJECTIVE Although it is generally believed that nicotine accounts for the beneficial effect of smoking on ulcerative colitis, the underlying mechanisms remain not well- understood. Our previous finding that nicotine inhibits inflammatory responses through inducing miRNA-124 prompted us to ask whether the miRNA is involved in the protective action of nicotine on UC. METHODS MiR-124 expression in colon tissues and cells was determined by q-PCR and in situ hybridization. The effect of miR-124 on protective role of nicotine in ulcerative colitis was evaluated in DSS-treated mice and IL-6-treated Caco-2 colon epithelial cells. Expression of p-STAT3/STAT3 was detected by immuno?histochemistry and Western blot analysis. RESULTS miR- 124 expression is upregulated in colon tissues from patients and DSS- induced colitis. Nicotine treatment further elevated miR- 124 level in colon tissues of the mice, in infiltrated lymphocytes and epithelial cells, and augmented miR- 124 expression in lymphocytes isolated from human ulcerative colon tissues. Administration of nicotine also reduced weight loss, improved DAI and decreased HE score in DSS-induced colitis. Moreover, knock?down of miR-124 in vivo significantly diminished the beneficial effect of nicotine, and in vitro on IL-6-treated Caco-2 colon epithelial cells. Further analysis indicated that nicotine inhibited STAT3 activation in vivo and in IL-6-treated Caco-2 colon epithelial cells and Jurkat human T lymphocytes, in which miR-124 knockdown led to increased activation of STAT3. CONCLUSION These data indicated that nicotine exerts its protective action in UC through inducing miR-124 and its effect on STAT3, suggesting that the miR-124/STAT3 system is a potential target for the therapeutic intervention of UC.

Objective To analyze monitoring results of iodized salt and distribution characteristics of problem areas with non-iodized salt in Gansu province during 2001 - 2009 and to provide a basis to develop countermeasures to iodine deficiency disorders. Methods According to the criterion of "The National Scheme of Iodized Salt Surveillance", two levels of monitoring were carried out on production and wholesale-level(during 2001 -2007) and household-level(during 2001 - 2009). Salt iodine was determined by direct titration method (GB/T13025.7-1999), and Sichuan salt or special salt was determined with an arbitration method. Criteria for qualified iodized salt was (35 ± 15)mg/kg(20 - 50 mg/kg), and for non-iodized salt was < 5 mg/kg. Results During 2001 - 2007, a total of 4900 salt samples at production and wholesale-levels were examined, with a qualification rate of 97.80% (4792/4900). Non-iodized salt rates were all below 5% in Gansu province, consumption rate of qualified iodized salt was higher than 90% after 2003. During 2001 - 2009, cities(states) with non-iodized salt problems appeared 23 times, with Linxia accounting for 39.1%(9/23), Wuwei accounting for 21.7%(5/23). During 2001 -2009, counties(districts) with non-iodized salt problem appeared 123 times, including 68 times of ethnic minorities and state poverty counties, accounting for 55.3%(68/123). During 2001 - 2005 and 2006 - 2009, ethnic minorities and state poverty counties were accounting for 49.4%(44/89) and 70.6%(24/34) in counties with non-iodized salt problem. Conclusions The quality of iodized-salt at production and wholesale level is satisfactory in Gansu province, household consumption rate of qualified iodized salt have reached national standard for eliminating iodine deficiency disorders. But ethnic minorities and state poverty counties are main regions with non-iodized salt problem, these areas will be the key areas of prevention of iodine deficiency disorders in Gansu province in the future.

Journal of Clinical Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2014;28(22):1785-1788
OBJECTIVE:
To analyze the correlation of the tympanic injection of triamcinolone acetonide, middle ear pressure (MEP) and radioactive secretory otitis media (RSOM) with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) after radiotherapy.
METHOD:
Fifty-two patients suffering NPC without otitis media before radiotherapy were randomly divided into three groups. 17 cases with 34 ears were distributed into treatment group I, and radiotherapy 1 hour before the start of each side of the tympanic cavity injection of triamcinolone acetonide injection, 1-7 weeks 1 times a week. Treatment group I had 17 cases with 34 ears, and radiotherapy 1 hour before the start of each side of the tympanic cavity injection of triamcinolone acetonide injection, 1-12 weeks 1 times a week. And control group consisted of 18 cases with 36 ears who didn't accept such treatment. In all 104 ears, MEP was tested at the begin of radiotherapy and the end of 1st, 2nd, 3rd month after radiotherapy.
RESULT:
From the beginning of radiotherapy to the end of th 1st, 2nd, 3rd month after radiotherapy, the morbidity of RSOM gradually increased and MEP decreased in the treatment group I , II and the control group, in which treatment group II showed the lowest morbidity of RSOM and MEP was maximum (P < 0.01), and the treatment group I showed the lower morbidity of RSOM and MEP was greater (P < 0. 05), while the control group showed the highest morbidity of RSOM and MEP was minimum (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSION
Tympanic injection of triamcinolone acetonide could reduce radiation injury, and medication time was positively correlated with the MEP, and a negative correlation with RSOM morbidity, and the longer treatment, the more significant the effect is. The difference is most obvious at the end of 3rd month after radiotherapy. It may be due to the more active repairation after radiation damage in middle ears, but long-term efficacy must continue to observe.

OBJECTIVETo study the effect of dragon's blood powder with different grain size on the transdermal permeability and adhesion of ZJHX paste.
METHODDragon's blood powder with grain sizes of 4, 19, 55 microm were got by ultrafine grinding technology, and then prepared into rubber pastes A, B, C and D, together with dragon's blood powder with grain size of 93 microm of original description. Franz diffusion cell method was adopted to compare the difference in transdermal permeability of dragon's blood powder with different grain sizes, with dracorhodin as the index, and compared their effect on the adhesion of pastes with initial adhesion, permanent adhesion and peel strength as the indexes.
RESULTQ(s)-t equations of pastes A, B, C, D were as follows: Q(s)=1.369 6t + 3.985 5, Q(s) = 1.262 8t +3.738 1, Q(s) = 1.192 3t + 3.320 6, Q(s) = 1.152 2t + 2.366 1, respectively, which showed that the adhesion of A was the best good.
CONCLUSIONWith the decrease in the grain size of dragon's blood powder, accumulative penetration of dracorhodin increases, which facilitates transdermal permeability and adhesion.

1H NMR metabonomics approach was used to reveal the chemical difference of urine between patients with Xiao-Chaihu Tang syndrome (XCHTS) and healthy participants (HP). The partial least square method was used to establish a model to distinguish the patients with Xiao-Chaihu-Tang syndrome from the healthy controls. Thirty-four endogenous metabolites were identified in the 1H NMR spectrum, and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis showed the urine of patients with Xiao-Chaihu Tang syndrome and healthy participants could be separated clearly. It is indicated that the metabolic profiling of patients with Xiao-Chaihu Tang syndrome was changed obviously. Fifteen metabolites were found by S-pot of OPLS-DA and VIP value. The contents of leucine, formic acid, glycine, hippuric acid and uracil increased in the urine of patients, while threonine, 2-hydroxyisobutyrate, acetamide, 2-oxoglutarate, citric acid, dimethylamine, malonic acid, betaine, trimethylamine oxide, phenylacetyl glycine, and uridine decreased. These metabolites involve the intestinal microbial balance, energy metabolism and amino acid metabolism pathways, which is related with the major symptom of Xiao-Chaihu Tang syndrome. The patients with Xiao-Chaihu Tang syndrome could be identified and predicted correctly using the established partial least squares model. This study could be served as the basis for the accurate diagnostic and reasonable administration of Xiao-Chaihu-Tang syndrome.

Chinese Journal of School Health 2025;46(5):634-637
Objective:
To explore the relationship of physical exercise behavior with mobile phone addiction and mental health of college students, so as to provide evidence for interventions to improve mobile phone addiction and mental health of college students.
Methods:
From October 8 to December 20 in 2024, 896 college students from 4 colleges in Beijing were selected using a combination of convenience sampling and stratified random cluster sampling method. Physical Activity Rating Scale (PARS-3), Mobile Phone Addiction Tendency Scale (MPATS), Adolescence Mental Health Diathesis Questionnaire (AMHDQ) and Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) were used. The correlation of mobile phone addiction and mental health on physical exercise behavior of college students were analyzed by multivariable Logistic regression and linear regression.
Results:
Among the surveyed college students, 504 (56.25%) students had low exercise, 262 (29.24%) had moderate exercise, 130 (14.51%) had high exercise, and 392 (43.75%) had sufficient exercise. The total score of PARS-3 was 18.00 ( 15.00 , 33.00) points. Logistic regression analysis showed that the total score of MPATS ( OR=1.022, 95%CI =1.008-1.036), the total score of SCL-90 ( OR=1.010, 95%CI = 1.005 -1.015), the total AMHDQ score ( OR=0.995, 95%CI =0.992-0.998) were significantly associated with insufficient exercise among college students ( P <0.05). Linear regression analysis showed that the scores of MPATS, AMHDQS and SCL-90 were significantly correlated with physical exercise behavior ( B=-0.20, 0.04, -0.07, P <0.05).
Conclusion
The physical exercise behavior of college students is related to mobile phone addiction and mental health.

To investigate changes of 14-3-3beta from apoptosis induced by PrP106-126 polypeptide, HeLa cell was incubated with PrP106-126 for 4h or 8h. Nucleus changes and the expression of PARP were detected differently by Hoechst staining and Western blotting. Expressing of protein and mRNA from 14-3-3beta was determined by Western blotting and Real-time PCR. The results show that typical nucleus pyknosis and chip of apoptosis and degradation of PARP were induced by PrP106-126 peptide in HeLa cells. Degradation of 14-3-3beta appeared in apoptosis groups induced by PrP106-126 peptide. However, 14-3-3beta mRNA did not display any changes in apoptosis groups. This study indicated that degradation of antiapoptosis protein 143-3beta induced by PrP106-126 peptide may be one of pathogenesis mechanism of prion disease.

Chinese journal of integrative medicine 2005;11(2):128-131
OBJECTIVETo observe the therapeutic effect of Xuesaitong soft capsule (XST) and its effect on platelet counts, coagulation factor 1 (CF1) as well as hemorrheologic indexes in treating patients with acute cerebral infarction (ACI).
METHODSTwo hundred and four patients with ACI were assigned into two groups, the control group (n = 96) and the treated group (n = 108). They were all treated with conventional Western medicines, including mannitol, troxerutin, citicoline, piracetam and aspirin, while to the treated group, XST was given additionally through oral intake, twice a day, 2 capsules each time for 8 successive weeks. The clinical efficacy was evaluated according to the nerve function deficits scoring and the changes of platelet count. CF1 and hemorrheological indexes were measured before and after treatment.
RESULTSThe total effective rate was 87.0% in the treated group, and 87.5% in the control group, respectively, showing insignificant difference between them. But the markedly effective rate in the treated group (66.7%) was significantly higher than that in the control group (27.1%, P < 0.01). The count of platelet was not changed significantly in both groups after treatment, while CF1 in them evidently lowered at the end of the 4th and 8th weeks of treatment, but showed insignificant difference between the two groups. The hematocrit, whole blood viscosity and plasma viscosity in both groups were all improved significantly after treatment, but also showed insignificant difference in comparison of the two groups.
CONCLUSIONXST has good efficacy in auxiliary treatment of patients with ACI, though its mechanism remains to be further explored.
