To apply chitooligosaccharide in the preparation of baicalin compound, in order to increase the drug dissolution in vitro, and investigate the basic property of the compound. Baicalin-chitooligosaccharide compound was prepared by using the solvent method. The structure and physicochemical properties of compound were analyzed by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and infrared vibrational spectrum (IR), and its dissolution behavior was also investigated. The results showed that the compound prepared at baicalin-chitooligosaccharide molar ratio of 1 : 1 could significantly improve the dissolution of baicalin. The results of DSC and XRD analysis suggested that baicalin may exist in an amorphous state. IR results indicated the interaction between baicalin and chitooligosaccharide. The baicalin-chitooligosaccharide compound could significantly improve dissolution in vitro of drug.

Biomedical and Environmental Sciences 2003;16(4):314-322
OBJECTIVETo investigate the potential effects of herbicide quinclorac (3,7-dichloro-8-quinoline-carboxylic) on the culturable microorganisms in flooded paddy soil.
METHODSTotal soil aerobic bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi were counted by a 10-fold serial dilution plate technique. Numbers of anaerobic fermentative bacteria (AFB), denitrifying bacteria (DNB) and hydrogen-producing acetogenic bacteria (HPAB) were numerated by three-tube anaerobic most-probable-number (MPN) methods with anaerobic liquid enrichment media. The number of methanogenic bacteria (MB) and nitrogen-fixing bacteria (NFB) was determined by the rolling tube method in triplicate. Soil respiration was monitored by a 102G-type gas chromatography with a stainless steel column filled with GDX-104 and a thermal conductivity detector.
RESULTSQuinclorac concentration was an important factor affecting the populations of various culturable microorganisms. There were some significant differences in the aerobic heterotrophic bacteria. AFB and DNB between soils were supplemented with quinclorac and non-quinclorac at the early stage of incubation, but none of them was persistent. The number of fungi and DNB was increased in soil samples treated by lower than 1.33 micro x g(-1) dried soil, while the CFU of fungi and HPAB was inhibited in soil samples treated by higher than 1.33 microg x g(-1) dried soil. The population of actinomycete declined in negative proportion to the concentrations of quinclorac applied after 4 days. However, application of quinclorac greatly stimulated the growth of AFB and NFB. MB was more sensitive to quinclorac than the others, and the three soil samples with concentrations higher than 1 microg x g(-1) dried soil declined significantly to less than 40% of that in the control, but the number of samples with lower concentrations of quinclorac was nearly equal to that in the control at the end of experiments.
CONCLUSIONQuinclorac is safe to the soil microorganisms when applied at normal concentrations (0.67 microg x g(-1)).

OBJECTIVETo establish the biological exposure limit values of urinary S-phenylmercapturic acid (SPMA) for assessing occupational exposure to benzene.
METHODSStudy participants were selected from 55 workers of benzene exposures below 32.5 mg/m(3). The concentration of personal exposure to benzene was measured by gas chromatography and sampled with personal sampler. The urine samples were collected at the end of work shift and individual internal exposure level was evaluated by determination of SPMA in urine by HPLC/MS method. Comparison of external and internal exposure was assessed by the relative internal exposure (RIE) index.
RESULTSThe benzene exposure level ranged from 0.71 to 32.17 mg/m(3) (geometric mean 6.98 mg/m(3), median 7.50 mg/m(3)). The urinary SPMA at the end of the work shift were significantly correlated with benzene exposure, (microg/g Cr) = -8.625 + 18.367X (mg/m(3)), r = 0.8035, (P < 0.01). According to the occupational exposure limit for benzene in China and calculation of regression equation, the expected value of urinary SPMA was 101.58 microg/g Cr. Mean level of biotransformation of per mg/m(3) benzene to urinary SPMA was 18.23 microg/g Cr and the metabolic efficiencies of benzene transformation to urinary SPMA decreased with benzene exposure increased.
CONCLUSIONBased on abroad documents and data, biological limit value for occupational exposure to benzene in China is recommended as follows: 100 microg/g Cr (47 micromol/mol Cr) for SPMA in the urine at the end of shift.

In order to compare the differences of 35 Menthae Herba samples collected on the market and at producing areas, the contents of six total terpenoids, the essential oil and chromatographic fingerprints were analyzed, which provided evidences for drawing up the commodity specifications and grading criteria of Menthae Herba. GC-MS method was used to analyze the chemical constituents of 35 different samples. The chromatographic fingerprints obtained by using GC were then evaluated by similarity analysis, hierarchical clustering analysis and principal component analysis. The relativity between the content of six terpenoids and the essential oil were studied. In this study, the chemical profiles of 35 samples from different producing areas had significant disparity. All samples collected in the report could be categorized into four chemical types, L-menthol, pulegone, carvone and L-menthone, but the chemical profiles had no relationship with the areas. The chromatographic fingerprints of the samples from different types were dissimilar, while the different producing areas were difficult to be separated. It was indicated that the content of volatile oil was positively correlated with the content of L-menthol and the sum of six total terpenoids. The content of the essential oil, L-menthol and the sum of six total terpenoids of Menthae Herba were considered as one of the commercial specifications and grading criteria. These results in the research could be helpful to draw up the commercial specification and grading criteria of Menthae Herba from a view of chemical information.

OBJECTIVEAccording to the information obtained from the revision of total hip arthroplasty, the situations of the artificial femoral stem under physiological stress were analyzed preliminarily. In order to accumulate clinical experience, the discussions about how to enlongate the life of artifical joints were performed.
METHODSFifty-three patients required revision operations were selected, including 28 males and 25 females, with an average age of 74.66 years old (61 to 84 years old). The average life of artificial joints was 18.24 years (3 to 27 years). The initial weightbearing was started 11 days (5 to 16 days) after the first operation. The main reasons for the revision were the spontaneous loosening and trauma. Based on imaging and surgical findings, as well as the histological pathology, the situations of the stems in human bodies were determined.
RESULTSFemoral prosthesis would sink under physiological stress. The design of femoral stems, motion of patients', and bone growth determined the secondary stability. Straight stems were helpful for physiological subsidence of prosthesis, achieving the stability with close bone-implant contact by bone growth, which allowed the patient to do early landing exercise. The collared prosthesis and prosthesis combined with internal fixation limited the subsidence of femoral stems. Their stability depends on the time of initial placement and the bone growth for supporting. Delaying the inital weightbearing was suggested for patients with these protheses.
CONCLUSIONAccording to the actual situation of the patients, the appropriate chosen of femoral stems and time to perform the weightbearing can extend the life of the femoral prosthesis.

Journal of Zhejiang University. Medical sciences 2007;36(2):167-173
OBJECTIVETo determine whether the skilled reaching test is an objective method for evaluating long-term neurological deficits after focal cerebral ischemia in mice.
METHODSIn a reaching box, mice were trained to reach food pellets with their left forelimb through a 0.5 cm slit for 3 weeks. Then focal cerebral ischemia was induced by occluding the right middle cerebral artery, and the percentage of success in obtaining food was observed for 4 weeks. In comparison, the neurological deficit score, the holding angle in an inclined board test, and right turns in a corner test were simultaneously performed. At the end of the experiments, brain infarcts and neuron densities were determined.
RESULTAfter focal cerebral ischemia, the percentage of success in the reaching test was reduced, the right turns in the corner test were increased, the neurological deficit score was increased, and the holding angle in the inclined board test was reduced as well. The holding angle recovered 5 d after ischemia, whereas other 3 indicators remained abnormal until 4 weeks. At the end of the experiments, the brain infarct volumes were increased, and the neuron densities in the cortex, hippocampal CA1 region and striatum were reduced in ischemic mice.
CONCLUSIONThe skill reaching test is an objective and stable method for evaluating long-term neurological deficits after focal cerebral ischemia in mice.
