1. Expression and role of Tie-2 in rectal carcinoma

Objective: To investigate the expression of Tie-2 in rectal carcinoma and its relationship with invasion and metastasis in rectal carcinoma. Materials: S-P immunohistochemical assay was used to detect the expression of Tie-2 in 40 cases of rectal carcinoma and 10 cases of normal rectal tissues. Results: Tie-2 was mainly localized in the cytoplasm and nucleus of vascular endothelial cells in cancerous tissues and partly in the cytoplasm of some cancerous cells. The expression of Tie-2 in rectal carcinoma was significantly higher than that in normal rectal tissues (P<0.05); however, Tie-2 expression was not associated with differentiation, invasion depth and Dukes stage (P>0.05), but with lymphatic metastasis (P<0.05). Conclusion: Tie-2 plays a key role in carcinogenesis and lymph node metastasis of rectal carcinoma.
2. Relationship between peritoneal macrophages and inflammatory reaction in a rat model of severe acute pancreatitis

Objective: To investigate the relationship between peritoneal macrophages (PMAs) and inflammatory reaction in a rat model of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into control group and SAP group. To induce SAP in rats, 40 g/L sodium taurocholate (0.1 mL/100 g) was injected into the pancreatic duct through retrograde exposure of pancreatic bile duct in hepatic porta. One-third of rats were sacrificed at 3, 6 or 12 h after modeling. PMAs were extracted, and incubated for 24 h in a humidified 5% carbon dioxide incubator. The expressions of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) mRNA in PMAs were measured by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. The levels of TNF-α and IL-1β in culture medium and serum were evaluated. The histological changes of pancreas were examined. Results: The expressions of TNF-α mRNA and IL-1β mRNA in PMAs were significantly higher in SAP group than in control group at each time point (P<0.01). The concentrations of TNF-α and IL-1β in culture medium and serum were significantly elevated in SAP group compared with control group (P<0.01). The histological analysis of pancreas indicated that the damage was more severe in SAP group than in control group (P<0.01). Conclusion: PMAs secrete cytokines into pancreatitis-associated ascitic fluid, and this study demonstrates a correlation between SAP and the activation of PMAs.
3. Significance of carbohydrate antigen 50 expression in colorectal carcinoma

Objective: To evaluate the significance of carbohydrate antigen 50 (CA50) expression in colorectal carcinoma. Methods: Immunohistochemical staining was used to detect CA50 expression in 10 cases of normal colorectal mucosa and 40 cases of cancer mucosa. Results: The expression of CA50 increased in normal colorectal mucosa, cancer distant mucosa, cancer adjacent mucosa and cancer mucosa, and there were significant differences among them (P < 0.05). The expression of CA50 in colorectal carcinoma was correlated with the degree of differentiation, Duke's stage and lymphatic metastases (P<0.05). Conclusion: The expression of CA50 can be used as a valuable index in evaluating the biological characteristics and prognosis of colorectal carcinoma.

Objective:To study the change of immunological response and cell proliferation in breast tissues augmented by polyacrylamide hydrogel injection(PHI).Methods:The expression of CD68,CD25 and PCNA in 20 breast tissues with indurations,12 without indurations after breast augmentation by PHI,and 10 normal breast tissues was examined by immunohistochemistry P-V6000; analysis was also done by H-E staining.Results:Hyperplasia of fibrous tissue and infiltration of inflammatory cells and macrophages were found in the breast and adjacent tissues 3-8 years after PHI.Positive cells of CD68,CD25 and PCNA hardly existed in the normal tissues,but the breast tissues around the polyacrylamide hydrogel had many positive cells of CD68 and PCNA,especially in cases with indurations;there were significant differences between the 3 groups(P
8.Assessment of fetal lung development in using two-dimensional ultrasonography

ObjectiveTo explore the application value of two-dimensional ultrasonic measurement of fetal left and right lung area, left and right pulmonary longitudinal diameter, left and right lung volume and total lung volume in evaluation of fetal lung development.MethodsIn 489 cases of normal singleton pregnancy, two-dimensional ultrasound scanning were conducted at 12-40 weeks. The left and right lung area was traced in the four chamber view using Trace method. The distances of left diaphragmatic dome to left lung apex and the right diaphragmatic dome to right lung apex were measured respectively on the left and right fetal lung parasagittal planes. Then calculation of left and right lung volume and total lung volume was carried out.ResultsSpearman correlation coefficient of gestational age and left and right lung area, left and right pulmonary longitudinal diameter, left lung volume and total lung volume were 0.929, 0.923, 0.923, 0.917, 0.946, 0.943, 0.951, and a positive correlation, with statistical significance (P<0.05). At 12-40 weeks, fetal left and right lung area, left and right pulmonary longitudinal diameter, left and right lung volume and total lung volume increased with gestational age and fetal growth. Pulmonary area increased faster before 26 weeks than that after 26 weeks. Pulmonary longitudinal diameter and lung volume grew at a constant rate throughout pregnancy, but the growth rate of pulmonary longitudinal diameter was slightly faster than that of lung volume. The fifth, twenty-fifth, fiftieth, seventy-fifth, ninety-fifth percentile of fetal left and right lung volume and total lung volume at 12-40 weeks were obtained. ConclusionsFetal left and right lung area, left and right pulmonary longitudinal diameter, left and right lung volume and total lung volume were positively correlated with gestational age between 12 and 40 week. The normal values of lung volume and total lung volume provide a reference index for prenatal diagnosis of fetal pulmonary hypoplasia. The fetal four chamber view and fetal left parasagittal section was easy to obtain, and may serve as a new conventional method in evaluating fetal lung developments.

Bacterial N-Acyl-L-homoserine lactones (AHLs)-mediated quorum sensing is involved in the regulation of diverse biological functions. As the bacterial pathogen population density increases, AHLs concentration secreted by pathogen reaches a threshold and then interacts with their intercellular receptor and triggers expression of virulence genes. It is a promising approach to biologically control bacterial disease in plants and animals by manipulating bacterial AHL-quorum sensing with AHLs-degrading enzyme and AHL analogue.

Ralstonia metallidurans CH34 was isolated from the deposit of a znic factory .The degradation of phenol by R .metallidurans CH34 was investigated. The results showed that R . metallidurans CH34 possesses high ability to degrade phenol with the biodegradation rate constant of 0.33 . The optimal pH , temperature and volume of medium for phenol degradation are pH 7.0 , 30℃ , and 20%(v/v), respectively . In addition , this strain retains its ability to degrade phenol in the presence of high concentration of heavy metal ion .The sodium citrate , sodium succinate can enhance the degradation of phenol.
