OBJECTIVETo observe the effects of Salvia miltiorrhiza (SM) on levels of neuropeptide Y1-36 and calcitonin gene-related peptide immune reactive substances (ir-NPY, ir-CGRP) in blood plasma and pons-oblongata after hypoxia-ischemic brain injury (HIBI) in neonatal rats.
METHODSSeven-day old rats were randomized into HIBI group (A), HIBI + SM group (B) and sham operation group(C). And each group was subdivided into 4 subgroups according to the different time after operation. 0.5 ml SM was injected intraperitoneally immediately and every 12 hrs afterwards. Changes of ir-NPY and ir-CGRP levels in plasma and pons-oblongata were observed immediately and 12, 24 and 48 hrs after HIBI by radioimmunoassay.
RESULTSPlasma levels of ir-NPY and ir-CGRP in different times after HIBI were all significantly raised but those in pons-oblongata were either raised or lowered to a certain degree. Part of the elevated ir-NPY could be reversed by SM injection.
CONCLUSIONCentral and peripheral neuropeptide Y1-36 and calcitonin gene-related peptide take part in the pathophysiological process of HIBI, SM could partially reverse the abnormal post-HIBI elevation of ir-NPY, which may be one of the pathways of SM in promoting recovery of damaged brain function.

Objective To investigate the value of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system in the early diagnosis of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) through observing the primary regularity of the electrical impedance changes in SAH animal models as well as the possible mechanism of this regularity. Methods The experimental SAH models in piglets were intmduced by one-time injection of fresh autologous blood into the cisterna magna. We observed the changes of the two-dimensional imaging with EIT system used for cominual dynamic monitoring to the models. Results The models were successfully introduced in 8 piglets. In the forepan of the injection, resistivity configuration decreased at the anterior region of the head as well as the posterior of that. At the time of finishing injection, the resistivity configuration reached the negative max value. After injection, resistivity configuration at the anterior region of the head gradually came back. But the resistivity configuration at the posterior region of the head increased persistenny. Conclusions Althouth the configuration of human head is so complex that limits the application of EIT on the head,it does have certain sensitivity in the diagnosis of SAH and can localize the hemorrhage site, so EIT may be applied widely in early diagnosis and assistant treatment of SAH in clinical.

OBJECTIVETo observe the anti-viral therapy effect on HBV reactivation in malignant tumor patients and hepatitis B virus carriers after their cancer chemotherapy.
METHODSThirteen cancer patients but also chronic hepatitis B virus carriers were enrolled in this study. They were randomly put into two groups. Eight patients were put in the therapeutic group. They all had abnormal liver functions induced by the reactivation of HBV after their cancer chemotherapy. Then they were treated with lamivudine. The other 5 cases were treated with lamivudine before their cancer chemotherapy when their serum HBV DNA levels were less than 10(3) copies/ml (preventive therapeutic group). The two groups were followed-up with liver function tests and serum HBV DNA level measurements.
RESULTSAmong the 8 cases of the therapeutic group, 5 cases died of liver failure; cancer chemotherapy was postponed or even terminated in 3 patients due to liver function abnormality and anti-virus treatment was started. In the preventive therapy group, no HBV reactivation was observed in any of the 5 cases.
CONCLUSIONFor HBV carrier cancer patients, an anti-viral therapy before their cancer chemotherapy seems to be very important.

This case report describes the diagnosis and endodontic therapy of maxillary fused second and third molars, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). A 31-year-old Chinese male, with no contributory medical or family/social history, presented with throbbing pain in the maxillary right molar area following an unsuccessful attempted tooth extraction. Clinical examination revealed what appeared initially to be a damaged large extra cusp on the buccal aspect of the distobuccal cusp of the second molar. However, CBCT revealed that a third molar was fused to the second molar. Unexpectedly, the maxillary left third molar also was fused to the second molar, and the crown of an unerupted supernumerary fourth molar was possibly also fused to the apical root region of the second molar. Operative procedures should not be attempted without adequate radiographic investigation. CBCT allowed the precise location of the root canals of the right maxillary fused molar teeth to permit successful endodontic therapy, confirmed after 6 months.

National Journal of Andrology 2010;16(8):705-711
OBJECTIVETo analyze the level of the oxytocin (OT) and the expression of oxytocin receptor (OTR) in males with idiopathic infertility.
METHODSSixty-five infertile males aged 20 -45 years were divided according to their semen parameters into an idiopathic oligozoospermia group (OG, n = 20), an idiopathic asthenozoospermia group (AG, n = 25), and an idiopathic oligoasthenozoospermia group (OAG, n = 20). Another twenty 20-45 years old healthy male volunteers with a natural childbearing history were included in the control group (CG). All the subjects were detected for the contents of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) , testosterone (T) and OT, and analyzed for the expression of OTR by sequencing the functional region of the OTR promoter (OTRP), OTR-mRNA, and OTR-COOH terminus. The gene sequences were compared using DNASTAR-MegAlign, Western blot values changed into enumeration data, and all the data analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Dunnette's multiple range t-test.
RESULTSA significantly lower content of OT was observed in CG ( [79.30 +/- 3.83] pg/ml) than in OG ([118.53 +/- 7.69] pg/ml, AG ([108.81 +/- 5.66] pg/ml) and OAG ([103.71 +/- 4.54] pg/ml) (F(0.05/2[2,82]) = 8.29, P < 0.01). The content of LH was significantly lower in AG ([4.26 +/- 0.31] IU/L) and OAG ([4.55 +/- 0.40] IU/L) than in OG ([6.77 +/- 0.57] IU/L) and CG ([7.19 +/- 0.50] IU/L) (F(0.05/2 [2,82]) = 11.64, P < 0.01), and so was the content of FSH in AG ( [5.02 + 0.39] IU/L) than in CG ([8.91 +/- 0.91] IU/L), OG ([11.86 +/- 1.76] IU/L) and OAG ([8.82 +/- 1.03] IU/L) (F(0.05/[2,82]) = 7.22, P < 0.01). There were no significant differences in the T content among the four groups (F(0.05/2[2,82] = 0.42, P = 0.739). No evident gene mutation was found in OTRP and OTR-mRNA gene sequencing. Human OTRs in the lymphocytes were monomers and oligomers, mostly tetramers and hexamers. There were obviously more monomers in AG (0.41 +/- 0.03) and OAG (0.13 +/- 0.01) than in OG (0.05 +/- 0.004) and CG (0.05 +/- 0.003) (F(0.05/2[2,82]) = 115.50, P < 0.01), while the number of oligomers was markedly decreased in 20% of the cases in AG.
CONCLUSIONSignificant differences in the content of OT and expression of OTR between fertile and infertile men suggested an association of OT with male infertility. The decreased expression of OTR oligomers and increased expression of monomers may be related to idiopathic asthenozoospermia, which has provided a new insight into the pathogenesis and treatment of male infertility.

Progress in Modern Biomedicine 2008;8(2):346-350
Objective: The research is to provide the basis for effective protection and wise utilization of the plants resources inTea Mountain National Ecological Demonstration Area of Shandong Province. Methods: The general investigation on plant species inTea Mountain was conducted. The research scope covered plant species, their distribution in wild, community structure and flora. Results: A total of 352 higher plants, belonging to 250 genera and 90 families, were recorded. Four species were listed as nationalsecond-grade protected plants. Regional vegetation is Pinus thunbergii plantation and Secondary forest. The main forest vegetation isPinus thunbergii community. Pantropic types and N. Tem types are dominant types. The latitude and "the islands-effect" should be themajor-effect factor of this pattern. Because of intense artificial active disturbance, primary vegetation types in this region have sufferedserious destruction, especially the rare and precious plants that are at high risk of dying out. Conclusions: This regional communitystructure is simple. The shrub layer and the liana layer are undeveloped. The syngenesis time is short.

OBJECTIVETo set up three-dimensional reconstruction of acetabulum bone structure from CT scanned image in computer with software of CAD and study quantitatively the morphologic features of the acetabulum.
METHODSThrough the process of CT scanning, and edge recording of the CT image, we made use of CAD software and Unigraphics software to reconstruct the 40 normal acetabulum bones for the radius of acetabulum (R), minimum thickness of medial wall of acetabulum (L), depth of Harris fossa (D) and maximum opening rim width in cross-sectional plane (W).
RESULTSThe average R was 30.48 +/- 2.05 mm. The average L was 2.35 +/- 1.13 mm. The average D was 5.71 +/- 1.21 mm. The average W was 63.06 +/- 2.05 mm. There was a linear relationship between the R and the W, but no correlation between the R, the L and the D.
CONCLUSIONSThere was a significance linear relationship between the R and the W in normal adult acetabulum. However no correlation between the R, the L and the D.

OBJECTIVETo research the clinical feasibility of emergency right lobe adult-to-adult live-donor liver transplantation in treating acute liver failure following severe hepatitis.
METHODSConsecutive ten severe hepatitis patients (4 acute-on-chronic severe hepatitis and 6 acute severe hepatitis; 9 caused by HBV and 1 with drug-induced acute liver failure) underwent emergency right lobe adult-to-adult live-donor liver transplantation in our hospital from April 2007 to December 2007. The +/- s of model for end-stage liver disease score was 33.22 +/- 6.55. The outcomes of these recipients were prospectively analyzed.
RESULTSAmong them, 8 ABO blood group were identical and 2 compatible. One was Rh sub-group negative. Except 2 recipients died (1 acute renal failure caused by veno cava thrombosis, 1 liver graft lose caused by hepatic artery thrombosis), the rest of recipients (80%) and all donors were safe. The mean graft-to-recipient weight ratio was (1.19 +/- 0.14)%, and graft volume to recipient estimated standard liver volume ratio was (65.13 +/- 8.75)%. Right lobe grafts with middle hepatic vein (MHV) 3 cases, without MHV 4 cases, without MHV but followed by V and VIII hepatic vein outflow reconstruction 3 cases. Encouraging outcome was achieved in this group of recipient: elevated serum creatinine, serum endotoxin, decreased serum prothrombin activity (PTA) and total bilirubin returned to normal about on postoperative day (POD) 3, POD 7, POD 14 and POD 28, respectively.
CONCLUSIONSOutcomes of emergency right lobe adult-to-adult live-donor liver transplantation for acute hepatic failure following severe hepatitis are fairly encouraging and acceptable. emergency right lobe adult-to-adult live-donor liver transplantation is an effective and life-saving modality for acute liver failure following severe hepatitis.

OBJECTIVETo assess serum levels of endogenous endostatin in patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC) and to determine the relationship of these levels to tumor stage, grade.
METHODSFrom March 2004 to October 2008, preoperative serum were obtained from 138 consecutive patients with CCRCC (73 patients in T1, 39 patients in T2, 20 patients in T3, and 6 patients in T4) and 40 healthy controls. Serum levels of endostatin were measured by sandwich-ELISA. Associations between circulating endostatin levels and clinicopathologic factors and clinical outcome were determined.
RESULTSEndostatin levels did not differ significantly between the patients with CCRCC (93.1 microg/L) and healthy controls (78.9 microg/L, P > 0.05). Serum levels of endostatin were significantly higher in the T2-4 CCRCC patients (107.2 microg/L) than those of the T1 patients (80.4 microg/L, P < 0.01). No significant difference was found in the endostatin levels among the T2-4 patients, or between healthy controls and the T1 patients. The serum endostatin concentration was significantly higher in the metastasis group (118.4 microg/L) than in the no metastasis group (89.5 microg/L, P < 0.05), but there was no significant difference between patients with distant metastasis group (122.0 microg/L) and lymph nodes metastasis (110.0 microg/L, P > 0.05). Patients with G3-4 tumors had significantly higher endostatin levels (111.8 microg/L) than those of patients with G1 (80.4 microg/L) and G2 tumors (86.2 microg/L, P < 0.01), but endostatin levels did not differ significantly between the two groups (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONPreoperative serum levels of endostatin elevated in patients with CCRCC and associated with higher stage and grade.
