BACKGROUND:Adipose-derived stem cells discovered recently are a new kind of adult stem cells, and have a strong multi-differentiation capacity. However, there are rare studies concerning in vivo osteogenic capacity of adipose-derived stem cells.
OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effect of adipose-derived stem cells combined with gelatin sponge on repairing bone defects.
METHODS:Adipose-derived stem cells from rabbit inguinal fat pads were isolated and cultured, and then
induced using an osteogenic medium containing bone morphogenetic protein 2 fol owed by injection of gelatin sponge. Radial defect models of rabbits were prepared. Compound of adipose-derived stem cel s and gelatin sponge was implanted into the lesion side, while gelatin sponge alone was implanted into the contralateral side. Rabbits were kil ed at weeks 6 and 12 after bone defect repair for X-ray examination, CT scan, and hematoxylin-eosin staining.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Lane-Sandhu X-ray and Lane-Sandhu histological scores after compound implantation were significantly higher than those after repair with gelatin sponge alone. It indicates that
adipose-derived stem cel s combined with gelatin sponge can promote bone defect healing of rabbits, showing an obvious osteogenic capacity in vivo.

Background Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is one of the most common malignant tumors.Despite the advances in therapy over the years, its mortality remains high. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) proteases 1 (SENP1) in NSCLC tissues and its role in the regulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression. We also investigated the association between the expression level of SENP1 and the clinicopathological features and survival of the patients. Methods A SENP1 small interfering RNA (siRNA) was constructed and transfected into the NSCLC cells.VEGF gene expression was analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).Immunohistochemistry staining was used to assess the expression of SENP1 in 100 NSCLC patients and its association with the clinicopathological features and survival was analyzed. Results VEGF expression was significantly higher in NSCLC tissues than in normal lung tissues.Inhibition of SENP1 by siRNA was associated with decreased VEGF expression.SENP1 was over-expressed in 55 of the 100 NSCLC samples (55%) and was associated with a moderate and low histological tumor grade (3.6%,38.2%,and 58.2% in high, moderate and low differentiated tumors,respectively,P=0.046),higher T stage (10.9% in T1,and 89.1% in T2 and T3 tumor samples,P <0.001)and TNM stage (10.9% in stage Ⅰ,and 89.1% in stages Ⅱ and Ⅲ tumor samples,P <0.001).The rate of lymph node metastasis was significantly higher in the SENP1 over-expression group (76.4%) than that in the SENP1 low expression group (33.3%,P <0.001).Sixty three patients received postoperative chemotherapy, including 34 with SENP1 over-expression and 29 with SENP1 low expression.Among the 34 patients with SENP1 over-expression,22 (64.7%) patients developed recurrence or metastasis, significantly higher than those in the low expression group 27.6% (8/29) (P=0.005).Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that lymph node metastasis (P=0.015),TNM stage (P=-0.001),and SENP1 expression level (P=0.002) were independent prognostic factors for the survival of NSCLC patients. Conclusions SENP1 may be a promising predictor of survival,a predictive factor of chemo-sensitivity for NSCLC patients, and potentially a desirable drug target for lung carcinoma target therapy.

OBJECTIVETo analyze the features, diagnosis and treatment of limb arterial injuries caused by traffic accidents.
METHODSA total of 43 patients with limb arterial injury admitted in our department over the past 30 years (about 50% of them happened during the last 10 years) were analyzed retrospectively in this article. The popliteal, femoral and brachial arteries were mainly involved, accounting for 43.2%, 20.5% and 20.5% respectively of all the involvements. There were 35 cases of open injury and 9 of close injury. The involved vessels were transected in 43.2% of the cases and contused in 40.9%. All the patients had various complications, such as fractures, dislocations and severe soft tissue injuries. The injured vessels were repaired by means of end-to-end anastomosis in 10 cases, autogenous vein graft in 23 cases and intraluminal hydraulic dilatation in 4 cases.
RESULTSSuccessful limb salvage was achieved in 34 cases initially, whereas 10 amputations were carried out due to injuries to popliteal arteries in 7, femoral arteries in 2 and humeral artery in 1 and severe soft tissue damages in 9 cases. Twenty-nine patients were followed up for 1-156 months, with the average of 48.8 months. There was good circulation in 22 cases and certain ischemia in 5 cases. Two amputations were carried out in the late stage because of popliteal artery thrombosis after repair in 2 cases. There was no death in this series.
CONCLUSIONSThe limb arterial injuries caused by traffic accidents are severe and complicated. It is proposed that particular attentions should be paid to the features in diagnosis and treatment for this type of injury and special efforts should be made for both life saving and limb salvage.

Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology 2012;5(1):10-16
OBJECTIVES: The Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) is a commonly used self-reporting tinnitus questionnaire. We undertook this study to determine the reliability and validity of the Chinese-Mandarin version of the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI-CM) for measuring tinnitus-related handicaps. METHODS: We tested the test-retest reliability, internal reliability, and construct validity of the THI-CM. Two-hundred patients seeking treatment for primary or secondary tinnitus in Southwest China were asked to complete THI-CM prior to clinical evaluation. Patients were evaluated by a clinician using standard methods, and 40 patients were asked to complete THI-CM a second time 14+/-3 days after the initial interview. RESULTS: The test-retest reliability of THI-CM was high (Pearson correlation, 0.98), as was the internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha, 0.93). Factor analysis indicated that THI-CM has a unifactorial structure. CONCLUSION: The THI-CM version is reliable. The total score in THI-CM can be used to measure tinnitus-related handicaps in Mandarin-speaking populations.

Chinese journal of integrative medicine 2008;14(3):173-179
OBJECTIVEThe Chinese Quality of Life Instrument (ChQOL) was developed as a valid generic health status instrument based on the well-established theory of health in Chinese medicine. Psychometric properties of the ChQOL were good. In the present study, the responsiveness of the ChQOL in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) were investigated and compared with two generic questionnaires, the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36-item Health Survey (SF-36) and World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment (WHOQOL-BREF), as well as one disease-specific questionnaire, the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHF).
METHODSThirty-nine in-patients with CHF who had undergone treatment with integrative medicine were recruited. The health status measurements were performed at enrolment and after a 4-week treatment. The following responsiveness indices were used: the effect size (ES) and standardized response mean (SRM). All patients were classified into those groups with stable measures and those groups with changes after a 4-week treatment, based upon both the doctor's global rating of changes in heart function tests, and the patient's global rating of changes in overall quality of life.
RESULTSAll domains of the ChQOL showed significant improvement. In the comparison of the responsiveness indices, the ChQOL was regarded as more responsive than the WHOQOL-BREF or SF-36 utility, but it was less responsive than the MLHF.
CONCLUSIONSThe ChQOL was better in sensitivity and responsiveness for assessing congestive heart failure as a generic measure than the SF-36 and WHOQOL-BREF. The ChQOL is considered suitable as an outcome measure for clinical trials in patients with congestive heart failure.
