This paper has made a distinction between the materialist concept of qi on the medical philosophical level and its substantial existence, and illustrated the materiality and multiplicity of qi. Materiality refers to the objective reality, a summation of various things or phenomena related to human beings; while multiplicity refers to diversity of specific substances, each holding its individual essence. Based on two essential conceptions "xiang" and "xiangji", and combining the theories of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine, this paper has also made a preliminary study on the substantial existence of qi at macro- and micro-levels, and on physiological (normal) and pathological (abnormal) aspects. It is the author's argument that studies of the substantial existence of qi from different aspects, micro-dimension in particular, will push the syndrome differentiation of traditional Chinese medicine to a more subtle sphere.

This article discusses the definition, commonality and clinical implications of transient ischemic attack (TIA) and ischemic stroke. In the definition of the two, the problems in the definition of TIA and ischemic stroke published by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association are pointed out, such as how to define " transient" ? In the commonality part of the two, based on the analysis of reversible ischemic tissue (i.e. ischemic penumbra), It is pointed out that there is a situation that the symptoms last for 24 h or even several days without infarction in clinical practice, and the concept of persistent ischemic attack (PIA or " persistent state of ischemic attack" ) is introduced. In the clinical implications part, the PIA is further elaborated, and the judgment, inference and significance of transience/persistence are discussed. It is suggested that the significantly increased risk of ischemic stroke over a certain time threshold should be taken as the criterion of " transient" threshold. This time threshold may be between 5 and 20 min. If the threshold is exceeded, it can be diagnosed as PIA. Patients with PIA may benefit from intravenous thrombolytic therapy, and this also becomes another basis to determine whether the time threshold exists and is reasonable.

Review of papers about acupuncture treatment on anxiety disorders since 1996 showed that many papers were mainly concerned with the treatment of anxiety disorders and obsession with electroacupuncture therapy. Baihui, Yintang, Shenmen, Dazhui, Taiyang, etc, were the most commonly involved acupoints. This paper argues that more emphasis should be transferred from heart head, the DU meridian and acupoints nearby in terms of the position of treatment, on scalp acupuncture and acupoint injection in terms of the methods of treatment, on the combination of diagnosis by western medicine and syndrome differentiation of traditional Chinese medicine in terms of treating strategy. As to the research method, evidence-based medicine, and multicenter, large sample randomized controlled trial study on anxiety disorders should be made.

Objective To explore pathogenes and pathogenesis of acute cerebral infarction (ACI) from the perspective of integrated traditional and western medicine.Methods To categorize the tongue and pulse manifestation of 64 ACI patients and calculate their frequency,constituent ratios.Meanwhile,patients' blood pressure and laboratory examination results are given descriptive and statistical analysis,showing their means and standard deviations,etc.Results The frequency of dark-red tongue,thin-greasy tongue fur,greasy-yellow tongue fur and taut-slippery is respectively 48,34,20,and 41,constituting 77.4％,54.8％,32.3％,64.1％ of the patients examined respectively; Mean and standard deviation of systolic blood pressure (SBP),total cholesterol (TC),white blood cell (WBC),neutrophil percentage (NEUT％),fasting plasma glucose (FPG),and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is respectively (141.20± 19.20)mm Hg (1 mm Hg=0.133 kPa)、(4.47±0.97) mmol/L、(7.83±2.63) × 109/L、(71.61±9.65)％、(6.16±2.25)mmol/L、and (6.60±1.66)％.Conclusion In terms of pathogens,wind,stasis,heat (fire) and turbid pathogen (phlegm,dampness,etc.) are important factors in bringing out ACI; In respect of ACI pathogenesis characteristics,healthy qi is slightly damaged and pathogenic qi is exuberant.Yet,the role of modern medical examination results,such as blood pressure,blood glucose,blood lipids etc.in the assessment of ACI pathogens and pathogenesis awaits further exploration.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the clinical effect of integrated Chinese and western medicine (ICWM) on the post-stroke comorbid anxiety and depression (PSCAD).Methods35 PSCAD patients were treated with ICWM therapy and scores of self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS) were analyzed statis tically before and after treatment.ResultsThe curi ng rate of PSCAD is about 74.29% and scores of SAS and SDS were significantly d ecreased after treatment (P<0.001).Conclusions The treatment of ICWM can produce a good effect on PSCAD.
