Aim To observe the influence of carvedilol on the injury and expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 induced by hydrogen peroxide in ECV-304 cells and investigate the anti-atherosclerotic effect of carvedilol. Methods: The viability of ECV-304 cells was detected by MTT assay.Morphological changes of ECV-304 cells were observed under converse microscope. The level of lactate dehydrogenase released to the extracellular medium, the intracellular superoxide dismutase activity and the extracellular and intracellular Malondialdelyde level were determined using automatic biochemistry analyser. The expression of ICAM-1 in protein level and mRNA level was detected with flow cytometric technique and RT-PCR.Results Pretreated with carvidilol(1.0?10~(-5)~1.0?10~(-9)mol?L~(-1)) for 24 h,the cell survival rate was increased significantly in a concentration-dependent manner.Pre-incubation for 24 h with carvedilol results in a significant concentration-dependent decline of LDH release from hydrogen peroxide(1.0?10~(-6)mol?L~(-1))injured cells. While ECV-304 cells were pre-incubated with carvedilol, the level of MDA decreased and the activity of SOD increased significantly.Carvedilol produced a concentration-dependent inhibition of the expression of ICAM-1 protein and mRNA in hydrogen peroxide injured ECV-304 cells in a similar manner. Conclusion: These experiments demonstrated that carvedilol was able to protect ECV-304 cells from the oxidative stress injury and inhibit ICAM-1expression in ECV-304 cells induced by hydrogen peroxide. Therefore,we can consider that carvedilol maintains and improves the function of endothelium damaged by hydrogen peroxide from many aspects, which does indicate extensive antioxidant effects on the hydrogen peroxide-injured vascular endothelial cells and suggest promising effects in atherogenesis process.

Two isomers of nitrochlorobenzene (o-, and p-NCB) were treated by a Pd/Fe catalyst in aqueous solutions through catalytic amination and dechlorination. Nitrochlorobenzenes are rapidly converted to form chloroanilines (CAN) first through an amination process, and then rapidly dechlorinated to become aniline (AN) and Cl(-), without the involvement of any other intermediate reaction products. The amination and dechlorination reaction are believed to take place predominantly on the surface site of the Pd/Fe catalysts. The dechlorination rate of the reductive degradation of the two isomers of nitrochlorobenzene (o-, and p-NCB) in the presence of Pd/Fe as a catalyst was measured experimentally. In all cases, the reaction rate constants were found to increase with the decrease in the Gibbs free energy (correlation with the activation energy) of NCBs formation; the activation energy of each dechlorination reaction was measured to be 95.83 and 77.05 kJ/mol, respectively for o- and p-NCB. The results demonstrated that p-NCBs were reduced more easily than o-NCBs.

Objective To investigate the effect of isoflurane inhalation during gestation period on plasticity of hippo-campal synapses in offspring rats. Methods Ten healthy pregnant SD rats at 14 day gestation were randomly divided into 2 gorups ( n = 5 each): control group (group C) and isoflurane group (group I). The rats in group C were mechanically ventilated with O2 while in group I the rats inhaled 1.3% isoflurane in O2 for 2 h a day until labor. Four weeks after birth 4 offspring rats from each pregnant rats (2 male, 2 female) were tested for learning and memory abilities using Morris water maze. Then the offspring rats were sacrificed and hippocampi isolated. The synaptic structure of hippocampal CA1 area was examined by trans-electron microscopy. Results Morris water maze test showed that the escape latency was significantly shorter and the number of times of spanning flat roof greater in group C than in group I. The structure of hippocampus was intact in group C but incomplete in group I. Meanwhile the thickness of synaptic density was significantly decreased in group I. Conclusion Isoflurane anesthesia of pregnant rats may induce learning and memory disabilities in offspring rats by inhibiting the plasticity of synaptic structure in hippocampus.

Groundwater remediation by nanoparticles has received increasing interest in recent years. This report presents a thorough evaluation of hexavalent chromium removal in aqueous solutions using iron (Fe(0)) nanoparticles. Cr(VI) is a major pollutant of groundwater. Zero-valent iron, an important natural reductant of Cr(VI), is an option in the remediation of contaminated sites, transforming Cr(VI) to essentially nontoxic Cr(III). At a dose of 0.4 g/L, 100% of Cr(VI) (20 mg/L) was degraded. The Cr(VI) removal efficiency decreased significantly with increasing initial pH. Different Fe(0) type was compared in the same conditions. The reactivity was in the order starch-stabilized Fe(0) nanoparticles>Fe(0) nanoparticles>Fe(0) powder>Fe(0) filings. Electrochemical analysis of the reaction process led to the conclusion that Cr(OH)(3) should be the final product of Cr(VI). Iron nanoparticles are good choice for the remediation of heavy metals in groundwater.
