1.Intradiscal therapy with 10% hypertonic saline for lumbar disc herniation
Journal of Interventional Radiology 1994;0(04):-
Objective A clinical trial of intradiscal injection of hypertonic saline to treat lumbar disc herniation, and observation of its effect, complications and changes in intervertebral disc tissue were performed for clinical application. Methods Discography was performed under local anesthesia, followed by a single injection of 1.0~2.5 ml 10% hypertonic saline. Results 262 cases were included in the study, with 4 years of average follow up. The final outcome ranked excellent in 93 cases and good in 100 cases. As a whole, the effective rate was 75.7% and the improvement rate was 71.5%. The procedure was effective in protrusion and confined extrusion types. 13 cases (6.7%) relapsed after the injection. No complication occurred. 26 cases resorted to surgery because of failure in intradiscal therapy, but no change was found, in the nerve and surrounding tissue of the intervertebral disc attributable to the injection during the surgical operation. The main causes of failure were the marked protrusion or non-contained extrusion, or the combination with spinal canal stenosis. Changes in the nucleus pulposus shown microscopically were similar to those resulted by the action of enzyme injection, but the injury to the disc was much milder. Conclusions Intradiscal therapy with 10% hypertonic saline for lumbar disc herniation is effective, mini-traumatic and safe.

Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2001;5(10):44-45
Objective The levels of endothelin-1(ET-1) and calcitonin gene-related peptide(CGRP) in the plasma and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)after acute cervical spinal cord injury. Method ET-1 and CGRP were determined by RIA in order to observe the effects of naloxone on levels of ET-1 and CGRP and neuronal death of cervical spinal cord. Result Levels of ET-1 in the plasma and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)after acute cerical spinal cord injury increased significantly; but the levels of CGRP in the plasma and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) decreased markedly. The levels of ET-1 in the plasma and cerebropinal fluid(CSF)decreased markedly after the threapy of naloxone; but levels of CGRP in the plama and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)increased sinificantly. Conclusion These deta suggest that the lessening of CGRP and increasing of ET-1 may be some important reson causing death of neuron after acute cervical spinal cord injury, and naloxone can protecet cervical spinal cord neuron by increasing levels of CGRP and decreasing levels of ET-1.

Objective To compare the different expression patterns of survivin and caspase-3 between the larger part and the smaller part of the dissymmetric enlarged prostates in BPH patients, and to clarify the role of apoptosis in BPH etiology. Methods BPH tissues from 25 patients were embedded in paraffin. The specimens constituted of two prostate parts from each patient. One part was from the larger enlarged gland and the other was from the smaller enlarged counterpart. 50 paraf-fin blocks were cut into sections and stained with survivin and caspase-3 polyclonal antibodies against human. All the data was analyzed by SPSS13.0 software. Results Survivin immunoreactivity was localized in prostatic cell nuclei. Survivin expression in larger enlarged parts (22.08±16. 33)0% was significantly higher than the smaller parts (7. 645±5. 45)%(P<0.01). Positive nuclear or cytoplasm staining was also observed in the Caspase-3 immunoreactivity. Caspase-3 expression was higher in smaller enlarged parts (51. 525±27. 27%) than in larger enlarged parts (33. 125±21.01%) (P< 0.01). Survivin expression in larger part of the enlarged prostates was inversely correlated with caspase-3 expression (r=-0. 474, P<0. 05). However, in smaller part of the enlarged prostates, the expression of the two factors had no relation (r=-0. 313,P>0. 05). Conclusions Survivin and caspase-3 expression patterns are different in the two parts of the dissymmetric enlarged prostates. These different patterns indicate apoptosis playing an important role in BPH development.

OBJECTIVE The short-term efficacy of endoscopic adenoid hypothermic plasma ablation and its effect on Eustachian tube function. METHODS 75 patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome who were treated in our hospital from March 2013 to March 2015 were divided into two groups according to the different operative methods: nasal power cutting group(30 cases) and low temperature plasma ablation group(45 cases), comparison of the two groups of patients with surgery time, intraoperative blood loss and follow-up after 6 months of clinical efficacy and Eustachian tube function. RESULTS The time of resection, operation time and intraoperative blood loss were significantly better in the low-temperature plasma ablation group than that in the rhinectomy group, the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05); The incidence of complications in the low-temperature plasma ablation group was significantly higher than that in the rhinectomy group, and the difference was significant(P<0.05); there was no significant difference between the two groups in the total effective rate and the postoperative disease-specific quality of life questionnaire(OSA-18) and there was no significant difference in the quality of life between the two groups(P>0.05). CONCLUSION The clinical efficacy of low-temperature plasma ablation is close to nasal dynamic cutting, but low-temperature plasma ablation surgery in the amount of bleeding was significantly less than the nasal excision. This surgical approach is minimally invasive and safe, but its postoperative secondary infection and secondary bleeding is high, so this need for further study.
