Objective To analyze MRI findings of the mitochondrial encephalopathy, in order to improve the understanding of this disease. Methods MR findings of 5 patients of clinically proved mitochondrial encephalopathy were retrospectively analyzed. Results Brain parenchymal lesions in all patients were low intensity on T1WI and high signal intensity on T2WI. One patient had bilateral globus pallidus involvement, while involvement of gray matter and white matter were observed in 4 patients. Three patients had enlargement of supratentorial ventricles, 2 patients had cerebellar atrophy and 1 patient had bilateral basal galia calcification. Conclusion MRI can show the intracranial lesions in patients with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy clearly, but accurate diagnosis should depend on clinical data.

Objective To investigate the selective killing effect of MDA/IL-24 on human hepatocellular carcinoma line HepG2 in vitro and provide a theoretical basis for gene therapy of hepatocellular carcinoma.Methods The MDA-7/IL-24 gene was transfected into human hepatocullular carcinoma cell line HepG2 and normal liver cell line L02 with a replication-incompetent adenovirus vector.The mRNA and protein expression of MDA7/IL-24 in HepG2 and L02 cells was examined by RT-PCR and ELISA assay respectively.MTT assay and flow cytometry were used to study tumor cell proliferation and cell cycle in vitro.Hoechst and Annexin-V and PI staining were studied to indicate the apoptosis.Results RT-PCR confirmed that the exogenous MDA-7/IL-24 gene was expressed in HepG2 and L02 cells.The protein product was confirmed by assay of the supernatant with ELISA.MTT and apoptosis test indicated MDA-7/IL-24 induced growth suppression and cell apoptosis of the HepG2 cell in vitro but not in cell line L02,and cell cycle test revealed MDA-7/IL-24 could block HepG2 cell in G2/M but not in L02.Conclusions MDA-7/IL-24 selectively induces growth suppression and apoptosis in lines HepG2 in vitro but not in L02 cell,which indicates that adenovirus mediated MDA-7/IL-24 can be an excellent tool for gene therapy in hepatocellular carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical value of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) for acute trauma of the spinal cord. METHODS: Sixteen patients with acute trauma of the spinal cord were examined with routine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ssh-EPI-DWI, on a 1.5-tesla MR system within 72 h trauma. RESULTS: All the 16 patients were examined by MRI and ssh-EPI-DWI: 6 patients were negative and 10 were positive in MRI, which showed local lesions with significant abnormality. Positive cases were classified into 2 categories depending on different degrees of tissue injury and characteristics of DWI. (1) Edema-type: 7 presented DWI high signals with different degrees in local lesions. (2) Mixed-type: 3 showed DWI heterogeneous high signals due to hemorrhage and edema in the lesions. There was significant difference in ADC values between the lesions and normal parts (t=-7.719, P<0. 01). CONCLUSION ssh-EPI-DWI of the spinal cord may provide satisfactory images and is a useful method for visualizing the injury in the superearly stage, helpful to determine the integrity and compression degree of the spinal cord.

This study sought to assess the inhibitory effects of the adriamycin magnetic albumin microspheres(ADM-MAMs) on Walker-256 mal ignant tumor cells in vitro induced by the permanent magnetic fields.T he cultured Walker-256 cells were divided into three groups:the group o f ADM-MAMs combined with magnetic fields, the group of AMD-MAMs without magnetic fields, and ADM group.The growth states of the cells were obse rved and photographed under the inverted microscope.The inhibitory rates(IR) were assayed by the modified MTT colorimetric method.The resu lts showed that the IR of the ADM-MAMs group were similar to those of the ADM group (P＞0.05),but the group of ADM-MAMs combined with magnetic field s had obviously higher IR and significent changes of the cells′ shapes.These findings indicate that the anticancer effect of ADM-MAMs on malignant tumor cells is similar to that of ADM,and such effect can be increased by the combined use of ADM-MAMs and external magnetic fields.
