Effects of different drying methods including sun drying, steamed, boiled, constant temperature drying (at 40, 50, 60 °C) on appearance, hardness, rehydration ratio, dry rate, moisture, total ash, extractive and polysaccharides contents were studied to provide the basis of standard processing method for Tulipa edulis bulbus. The results showed that the treatments of sun drying and 40 °C drying showed higher rehydration ratios, but lower dry rate, higher hardness, worse color, longer time and obvious distortion and shrinkage in comparison with other drying methods. The treatments of 60 °C constant temperature drying resulted in shorter drying time, lower water and higher polysaccharides content. Drying time is shorter and appearance quality is better in the treatment of steaming and boiling compared with other treatments, but the content of extractive and polysaccharides decreased significantly. The treatments of 50 °C constant temperature drying led to similar appearance quality of bulb to commercial bulb, and it resulted in lowest hardness and highest dry rate as well as higher rehydration ratio, extractive and polysaccharides content, moderate moisture and total ash contents among these treatments. Based on the results obtained, 50 °C constant temperature drying is the better way for the processing of T. edulis bulbus.

OBJECTIVETo investigate thoracic aortic longitudinal elastic strength in β-aminopropionitrile (BAPN) treated rat model of aortic dissection (AD).
METHODSTwenty-nine young rats (Sprague-Dawley) were divided into tow groups, control group (n = 12) and BAPN group (n = 17). Seventeen rats were treated with 0.25% BAPN mixed in feed for 6 weeks. All the rats were sacrificed in the end of experiment and aorta was harvested for biomechanical and pathological study. Longitudinal elastic strength and stress were detected and analyzed by material testing machine. Elasticity modulus as well as maximum stretching length, draw ratio, maximum load, maximum strength, and maximum extensibility was calculated according to the analysis with thickness and area of aortic media.
RESULTSNine BAPN-treated rats died of aortic dissecting aneurysm rupture during the experiment. The diameter of the aneurysms was (6.33 ± 1.17) mm and the length was (9 ± 5) mm. The maximum diameter significantly increased in BAPN-induced rats with AD (group B2) compared with without AD (group B1) and control group ((6.49 ± 1.20) mm vs. (1.45 ± 0.11), (1.25 ± 0.26); F = 165.257, P = 0.001 and 0.000, respectively), but there was no significance between group B1 and control group (P = 0.108). Thickness and area of aortic media in BAPN-induced rats significantly increased compared with control group (F = 27.277 and 27.153, P = 0.000 and 0.000, respectively), but there was no significance of area between group B1 and B2 (P = 0.540). Maximum stretching length, draw ratio, maximum load, maximum strength maximum extensibility and elasticity modulus were significantly decreased from group B2, group B1 to control group (P < 0.01, respectively).
CONCLUSIONSThis study built a successful model of AD. Biomechanical analysis and the decrease of maximum stretching length, draw ratio, maximum load, maximum strength maximum extensibility and elasticity modulus may explain the formation of AD partly.

OBJECTIVETo explore the significance of C4d deposition in follicular lymphoma (FL).
METHODSThe deposition of C4d was detected in samples from 133 cases of lymphoma by immunohistochemistry and FL was studied by the double stainings of CD35/C4d, CD21/C4d and Bcl-2/C4d,respectively.
RESULTSAmong the 26 FL tissues, irregular C4d deposition was seen in 19 tumor tissues. Double staining for CD35, CD21 or Bcl-2 showed the C4d deposition was around the follicular dendritic cells (FDC). There was no significant difference between the positive rate of C4d and the degree of lymphoma. No deposition was found in the diffuse areas of FL and other type lymphomas.
CONCLUSIONC4d deposition around the follicular dendritic cell in the neoplastic follicles is a specific indicator of follicular lymphoma.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the infections occurring in the induction period of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the pathogens of the infections, and drug resistance of isolated strains.
METHODSA retrospective analysis was performed for the clinical data of 130 children with newly-diagnosed childhood ALL. Infections occurring during the induction chemotherapy, pathogenic strains, and drug-resistance spectrum were analyzed.
RESULTSThe incidence rate of clinical infection and/or microbial infection reached 76.2%. The lungs were the most common infection site (46.2%). The children with severe infection accounted for 52.3%, among whom 60 had pulmonary infection and/or 21 had sepsis. A total of 50 pathogenic strains were detected, which consisted of 29 bacterial strains and 21 fungal strains. Of all the children, 28.5% experienced infections caused by at least one microbe. Among the 29 bacterial strains, there were 19 (65.5%) Gram-negative bacteria and 10 (34.5%) Gram-positive bacteria. The most common Gram-negative bacteria were Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which were 100% sensitive to imipenem. The most common Gram-positive bacterium was Streptococcus viridans, which was 100% sensitive to vancomycin. The infections caused by fungi accounted for 16.2%, with Candida albicans as the most common fungus. Compared with those with non-severe infections, the children with severe infections had a significantly shorter time to the occurrence of agranulocytosis, a significantly longer duration of agranulocytosis, significantly higher incidence of fever and C-reactive protein (CRP) level, and a significantly longer length of hospital stay (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONSPulmonary infections are common in the induction period of childhood ALL. Gram-negative bacteria are the most common pathogenic bacteria. Severe infections can be controlled by carbapenems combined with vancomycin and antifungal agents.

OBJECTIVETo study the clinical features and treatment outcome of children with mature B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (B-NHL).
METHODSA total of 28 previously untreated children with mature B-NHL were enrolled and given the chemotherapy regimen of CCCG-B-NHL-2010. Among them, 20 were given rituximab in addition to chemotherapy. The children were followed up for 31 months (ranged 4-70 months). A retrospective analysis was performed for the clinical features of these children. The Kaplan-Meier method was used for survival analysis. A univariate analysis was performed to investigate the prognostic factors.
RESULTSAmong the 28 children, 17 (61%) had Burkitt lymphoma, 8 (29%) had diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), and 3 (11%) had unclassifiable B-cell lymphoma. As for the initial symptom, 13 (46%) had cervical mass, 10 (36%) had maxillofacial mass, 9 (32%) had hepatosplenomegaly, 5 (18%) had abdominal mass, and 5 (18%) had exophthalmos. Of all children, 14 had a lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level of <500 IU/L, 3 had a level of 500-1 000 IU/L, and 11 had a level of ≥ 1 000 IU/L. After two courses of chemotherapy, 21 children achieved complete remission and 7 achieved partial remission. At the end of follow-up, 24 achieved continuous complete remission and 4 experienced recurrence. The 2-year event-free survival rate was (85.7± 6.6)%. The children with bone marrow infiltration suggested by bone marrow biopsy, serum LDH ≥500 IU/L, and bone marrow tumor cells >25% had a low 2-year cumulative survival rate.
CONCLUSIONSThe CCCG-B-NHL 2010 chemotherapy regimen combined with rituximab has a satisfactory effect in the treatment of children with B-NHL. Bone marrow infiltration on bone marrow biopsy is associated with poor prognosis.

OBJECTIVES: In Fujian Province, China, gastric cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality among all malignant tumors. Nanjing county and Minqing county are located in inland Fujian and have similar general demographics. However, the adjusted mortality rate of gastric cancer in Minqing was found to be much higher than that in Nanjing. We sought to explore factors associated with this increased risk of gastric cancer between the two counties. METHODS: We recruited 231 and 224 residents from Nanjing and Minqing, respectively, and analyzed differences between their dietary habits, Helicobacter pylori infection rates, and concentrations of serum pepsinogen I, pepsinogen II, gastrin-17, and ratio of pepsinogen I:II. RESULTS: Subjects in Minqing had more first-degree relatives who had been diagnosed with upper gastrointestinal tumor, more unhealthy dietary habits, a higher Helicobacter pylori positive rate, and greater proportion of abnormal serum gastrin-17 than those in Nanjing did. CONCLUSIONS: The factors that differed between these two counties might indicate that residents in Minqing have a higher risk for developing gastric cancer than those in Nanjing do.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the method and effectiveness of rigid-bronchoscopic cryosurgery for advanced central lung cancer.
METHODSForty-eight patients were enrolled in this study from June 2002 to December 2008, including 33 male and 15 female. The average age was 70 years (ranged from 45 to 83 years old). For the 48 patients, 38 cases were patients with advanced central lung cancer who were not suitable for surgery, and the remaining 10 cases were patients with local recurrence in trachea or main bronchus postoperatively. Cryosurgery was performed 120 times for all patients, 2.5 times per patient on average. The trachea or bronchus station, symptom such as dyspnea, hemoptysis, respiratory function and quality of life were observed.
RESULTSThe unblocked ratio of trachea and bronchi was 97%. All patients got satisfied improvement ratio of symptoms, 87.5% for dyspnea, 72.9% for cough, 93.8% for hemoptysis and 62.5% for chest pain. Respiratory function tests showed that both the mean forced expiratory volume in first second and forced vital capacity got an improvement from (1.03+/-0.05) L to (1.85+/-0.13) L and from (1.69+/-0.18) L to (2.96+/-0.14) L respectively (P<0.01). Karnofsky score also got no less than 20 scores improvement. The Follow-up time was 6 to 62 months. The longest survival was 62 months. The median survival time was 20 months. There was no severe perioperative complications and mortality except for 3 cases of moderate exeduation.
CONCLUSIONSCryosurgery is easy to perform with minimal complications. Not only could it provide an effective and rapid control of symptoms caused by central lung cancer, it could also unobstructed bronchus promptly and improve patients' quality of life.
