2.An automated method for assessment of sublingual microcirculatory perfusion based on videos.
Chinese Journal of Medical Instrumentation 2014;38(4):251-254
OBJECTIVEThe assessment result of microcirculatory perfusion provides significant evidence for the detection of microcirculatory alterations in sepsis patients, and functional capillary density based on vessel segmentation can reflect microcirculatory perfusion effectively.
METHODSFirst, preprocessing comprise operations to improve the quality of images in order to maximize the contrast between background and vessels. Secondly, adaptive local thresholding is used for initial segmentation to get the general vessel region. Finally, post-processing technique reduces the image artifacts and links the vessel fragment, and then functional capillary density is calculated based on the segmentation results.
RESULTSSeveral sublingual microcirculatory data have been tested, and the agreement between the results by AVA and the proposed algorithm reached up to 92%.
CONCLUSIONSThe method can realize automated assessment of sublingual microcirculatory perfusion rapidly and accurately, and has strong clinical value.

3.Developing trends of transcutaneous functional electrical stimulation for hand function reconstruction after spinal cord injury
Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2007;0(17):-
A spinal cord injury at a level above T1 often results in a partial or complete loss of the hand function. Transcutaneous functional electrical stimulation is a method to stimulate the handicapped limb muscle by low frequency impulsive current to generate muscle contraction. The immediate effect can replace or correct the lost function to promote function reconstruction through adjusting high-level nerve center and improve daily activity. Functional electrical stimulation provides a efficient therapy for the rehabilitation of patients with spinal injury, and brings a hope to improve the quality of life of paraplegina patients. However, transcutaneous functional electrical stimulation requires assistance to place the equipment on the patients and technical support. Both patients and their families often have too high expectations from this therapy, and become disappointed since the results are not satisfactory. Therefore, we should continue to carry out studies on the parameters and equipments of functional electrical stimulation, and renovate the stimulator to make it more convenient and efficient.

ObjectiveTo investigate the change of serum vitamin D level in type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) patients, and explore the role of vitamin D in the metabolic disturbance of T2DM and relationship with other metabolic indexes.MethodsBased on the diagnostic criteria of diabetes mellitus of the WHO (1999) and Asian adult obesity criterion established by International Obesity Special Work Group in 2002,32 patients were selected as T2DM group A[body mass index (BMI)≥25.00 kg/m2],and 38 patients were selected as T2DM group B(BMI < 25.00 kg/m2).Thirty-three healthy subjects were selected as control group. The biochemical parameters of human were measured and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [ 25 (OH)D3] was measured by enzyme-linked immunoassay. The statistic data were compared among three groups.ResultsThe levels of serum 25 (OH)D3 in T2DM group A,T2DM group B and control group were (20.59 ± 4.82 ),( 27.07 ± 5.73 ) and ( 32.27 ±: 8.49 ) μ g/L,and there were significant differences among three groups (P < 0.05 ).The level of serum 25 (OH)D3 was (25.51 ± 6.12) μ g/L in T2DM patients with normal blood pressure (43 cases),(21.87 ± 5.78) μ g/L in T2DM patients with hypertension (27 cases),there was significant difference between the two patients ( P < 0.05 ).The level of serum 25 ( OH ) D3 was (28.42 ± 5.20) pg/L in T2DM patients with normal blood lipids (8 cases),(23.55 ±6.15)μg/L in T2DM patients with dyslipidemia (62 cases),there was significant difference between the two patients (P< 0.05).The level of serum 25 (OH)D3 was negatively associated with weight, waistline,BMI,systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, fasting insulin, insulin resistance index, total cholesterol, triaeylglycerol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol(P < 0.01 or < 0.05 ),and had no significant association with parathyroid hormone, calcium, phosphorus, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and age (P > 0.05).ConclusionThe level of serum vitamin D decrease in T2DM patients, especially remarkably in patients combined with obesity, hypertension and dyslipidemia.
5.The inhibitory effect of Bevacizumab on retinal neovascularization in oxygen-induced retinopathy in the mouse
Chinese Journal of Ocular Fundus Diseases 2008;24(3):184-188
Objective To observe the inhibitory effect of Bevacizumab on retinal neovascularization in oxygen-induced retinopathy in the mouse. Methods 90 one-week-old C57BL/6J mice were divided into four groups at random.15 mice in the 1st group as normal control group,15 mice in the 2nd group as oxygen control group,30 mice in the 3rd group as high-dose Bevacizumab treatment group,30 mice in the 4th group as low-dose Bevacizumab treatment group. The 2nd,3rd and 4th groups were exposed to 75%oxygen for 5 days and then to room air.At the 12th day,One eye of each mouse of two control groups were received an intravitreal injection with Bevacizumab at 2μl、1μl respectively, and the same volume of BSS was injected into the other eye of the mice. The adenosine diphosphatase(ADPase)histochemical technique was used for retinal flat mount to assess the oxygen-induced changes of retinal vessels. The number of the endothelium cell nuclei of proliferative neovascularization was quantified by retinal microtome chromoscopy.Real-time PCR analysis was performed to examine the expression of VEGF mRNA. Results Comparing with oxygen control group, regular distributions, reduced density of retinal vascular and reduced endothelium cell nuclei which extending retinal membrane were observed in the treatment groups(P<0.001).But the differences between two treatment groups are not statistically significant(P>0.05).The expression of VEGF mRNA was not significantly different in oxygen control group whatever it whether accepted Bevacizumab treatment or high or low dose(P>0.05). Conclusion Intravitreal injection with Bevacizumab can effectively inhibits the retinal neovascularization in oxygeninduced retinopathy in the mouse.Intravitreal injection with Bevacizumab might become to the new method to treat retinopathy of premature.
6.An Algorithm for Microcirculatory Blood Flow Velocity Measurement Based on Trace Orientation in Spatiotemporal Image.
Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2015;32(2):446-450
The velocity of blood in vessels is an important indicator that reflects the microcirculatory status. The core of the measurement technology, which is based on spatiotemporal (ST) image, is to map the cell motion trace to the two-dimensional ST image, and transfer the measurement of flow velocity to the detection of trace orientation in ST image. This paper proposes a trace orientation measurement algorithm is based on Randomized Hough Transformation and projection transformation, and it is able to estimate trace orientation and flow velocity in noisy ST images. Experiments showed that the agreement between the results by manual and by the proposed algorithm reached over 90%.

7.Screening and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity: current status, problems and prospects in China
Chinese Journal of Ocular Fundus Diseases 2012;28(1):3-7
Early detection and timely treatment hold the key to cure retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).ROP screening is carried out unevenly in China.Examination equipments and personnel experiences are the major factors to constraint ROP screening. In addition to strengthening personnel training,it is necessary to establish a standard guideline and pipeline for ROP consultation and referral. Laser photocoagulation and cryotherapy are the first options for the threshold ROP and Type 1 pre-threshold ROP.Scleral buckling or vitrectomy is needed for advanced ROP when retinal detachment occurs. The clinical efficacy of intravitreal injection of bevacizumab (an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor monoclonal antibody) for severe ROP is encouraging, but needs further verification.Genetic interference and stem cell therapy will be the prosperous futures in the treatment of ROP.The screening and treatment of ROP in China is becoming more common and improved, but it is still a long way to go considering the huge population of China.
