China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica 2017;42(4):719-724
Five main flavonoids of Hebei Xiangju were studied using the Density Functional Theory (DFT) B3LYP method with 6-311 G (d) basis set.Their activities were analyzed based on molecular structure, bond dissociation energy (BDE),natural orbital charge distribution (NBO),bond order and the energy gap between HOMO and LUMO. The results showed that the existing of intra molecular hydrogen bond in B ring can improve the antioxidant activity of the flavonoids, at the same time, the hydroxyl groups on the glycosides do not have the activity of eliminating free radicals, but decrease the total molecular antioxidant activity. As a result, the antioxidant ability order of the five flavonoids compounds is luteolin< luteolin-7-O-glucoside< apigenin < acacetin < acacetin-7-O-glucose, which is agreement with the experimental conclusion reported in literature. The results showed that the DFT method can provide theoretical guidance for the selection of natural flavonoid antioxidants.

Objective: To investigate the correlation between eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3, subunit A (eIF3a) and human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) expression and ovarian cancer. Methods: RT-PCR or immunohistochemistry was used to examine eIF3a and HE4 mRNA or protein expression in ovarian tissues from patients with ovarian cancer (n=181) or benign ovariantumors, or from the healthy women. Results: hTere were signiifcant differences in mRNA and protein expression of eIF3a and HE4 among normal ovarian tissues, benign ovarian tumor tissues, and ovarian cancer tissues (P<0.05). hTere were signiifcant differences in mRNA expression of eIF3a and HE4 between the normal tissues and the ovarian cancer tissues, or between the benign ovarian tumor tissues and the normal tissues (P<0.001). hTe mRNA expression of eIF3a in the normal ovarian tissues was signiifcantly higher than that in the benign ovarian tumor tissues or that in the ovarian cancer tissues. hTe mRNA expression of HE4 was gradually increased from the normal ovarian tissues, the benign ovarian tumor tissues to the ovarian cancer tissues. hTe mRNA expression of HE4 in the ovarian cancer tissues was signiifcantly higher than that in the benign ovarian tumor tissues (P<0.001). Positive expression rates for eIF3a or HE4 protein in normal, benign tumor, and cancer tissues were 0, 66.7%, and 81.0% or 0, 27.8%, and 56.2%, respectively. hTere were signiifcant differences in positive expression rates of eIF3a protein and HE4 protein between the ovarian tumor tissues and benign ovarian tumor tissues, between the ovarian cancer tissues and the normal ovarian tissues, or between the benign ovarian tumor tissues and the normal ovarian tissues (P<0.001). hTe eIF3a protein expression was positively correlated with HE4 protein expression (r=0.575,P<0.05). Conclusion: The expressions of eIF3a and HE4 are associated with ovarian cancer, and extracellular regulated protein kinases may play a role in the interaction between eIF3a and HE4.

Objective To compare and analyze the efficacy of PVA particles and Embosphere microspheres for partial splenic embolization (PSE)in the treatment of hypersplenism secondary to liver cirrhosis. Methods Sixty patients underwent PSE for treatment of hypersplenism secondary to liver cirrhosis were analyzed retrospectively.According to different PSE embolization materials, they were divided into two groups:30 patients with PVA particles embolization (group A),and other 30 patients with Embosphere microspheres embolization (group B).The changes of white blood cells (WBC),platelets (PLT),spleen thickness, portal vein diameter and postoperative pain and fever were compared on the 3rd day,the 1st week, the 3rd week, the 1st month, the 3rd month, and the 6th month after PSE and compared between the two groups. Results The WBC and PLT of the 2 groups after PSE were significantly higher than those before PSE (all P<0.05 ).The spleen shrank after 2 months, and there was no significant difference in spleen thickness and portal vein diameter between the two groups at the same time (all P>0.05).The postoperative pain in group A was significantly less than that in group B (P<0.05).Conclusion Both PVA particles and Embosphere microspheres have good curative effect in the treatment of hypersplenism secondary to liver cirrhosis. The price of PVA particles is lower than that of Embosphere microspheres, and the postoperative pain degree is lighter than that of Embosphere microsphere, which suggests PVA particles with more advantages in clinical application.

Rabies is an acute, progressive encephalitis caused by infection with rabies virus (RABV). It is one of the most important zoonotic infections and causes more than 70,000 human deaths annually ( http://www.rabiescontrol.net ). It has long been held that a rabies infection is lethal in humans once the causative RABV reaches the central nervous system (CNS); however, this concept was challenged by the recent recovery of a small number of rabies patients. An analysis of these patients revealed that the bloodbrain barrier (BBB) played a major role in protection against the virus. The main reason for the survival of these patients was enhanced BBB permeability after infection with the causative agent (usually bat-originated RABV showing reduced pathogenicity), which allowed immune cells to enter the tissues of the CNS and clear the infection (Willoughby et al., 2005). These findings have been confirmed in animal infection experiments (Wang et al., 2005; Roy and Hooper, 2007, 2008; Faber et al., 2009). Thus, the BBB has attracted the attention of scientists interested in the pathogenesis of, and therapeutic approaches, for rabies. This paper introduces the role of the BBB in rabies infections and protection of the CNS and provides insight into future treatments for patients with clinical rabies.

International Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2023;46(1):18-22
Objective:To investigate the effect of smart air cell mattresses on sleep quality. Methods:Twenty healthy young people were enrolled as subjects, and each subject underwent a four-night polysomnographic monitoring experiment, including two nights each on a smart air cell mattress and a general mattress. The differences in sleep quality were compared by self-assessment of sleep quality, objective sleep indicators, and electroencephalogram (EEG) spectral analysis. Results:In the comparison between the smart air cell mattress and the general mattress, the differences in self-assessment of sleep quality and objective sleep indicators were not statistically significant (all P > 0.05), but the smart air cell mattress had a slight overall advantage. The relative power of EEG in the low-frequency band and the relative power of EEG in the high-frequency band were higher in the subjects with the smart air cell mattress. Conclusions:For the healthy young population, the smart air cell mattress can positively influence sleep quality to some extent, and the change in EEG relative power indicates an increase in sleep depth.

Objective:To investigate the impact of peak pressure upon different bone densities during autonomous puncture by orthopedic robot on puncture path deviation and bone cement leakage. Methods:A spinal surgery robot system was designed for autonomous vertebral puncture and bone cement injection, and six porcine spine specimens were used for single-segment or double-segment simulated percutaneous vertebral augmentation surgery. The accuracy of puncture path (Gertzbein-Robbins grading), bone cement leakage classification, and peak bone drill pressure were measured to assess the accuracy of autonomous vertebral puncture and bone cement leakage in vertebral cortical and cancellous bone of different densities. Results:A total of 64 porcine vertebrae were simulated for puncture, among which 53 vertebrae were classified as Grade A, 8 as Grade B, and 3 as Grade C according to the Gertzbein-Robbins grading. The cortical bone pressure of Grade A vertebrae was 6.663±0.319 N which was lower than that of Grade B (8.348±0.418 N) and Grade C (11.500±0.600 N), with significant differences ( F=341.000, P<0.001). The cancellous bone pressure of Grade A, B, and C vertebrae were 3.660±0.317, 3.594±0.608, and 4.117±0.257 N, respectively, with no significant difference ( F=2.496, P=0.091). There were 40 cases of no leakage, 20 cases of Type I leakage (leakage into the surrounding vertebrae), and 3 cases of Type II leakage (leakage into the vertebral canal), with an overall leakage rate of 36% (23/64). The peak cortical bone pressure for no leakage, Type I, and Type II leakage was 6.638±0.301, 6.792±0.404, and 6.753±0.473 N, respectively, and the peak cancellous bone pressure was 3.634±0.279, 3.783±0.423, and 3.920±0.255 N, respectively, with no significant difference ( F=1.521, P=0.227; F=2.106, P=0.131). Conclusion:During the autonomous puncture process of the novel orthopedic robot, the accuracy of autonomous puncture path decreased when the puncture pressure through the cortical bone was high, and the probability of invading the pedicle increased. The puncture pressure of cortical and cancellous bone had no significant effect on the occurrence rate of bone cement leakage.
