Annals of Dentistry 2010;17(1):1-8
This cross-sectional study was carried out to identify
A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. intermedia in the
subgingival plaque of three ethnic groups (Malays,
Chinese and Indians) in a selected group of adult
Malaysians with advanced Chronic Periodontitis and
to correlate these findings with their periodontal status.
Thirty periodontally diseased adults were age, gender
and ethnically matched with 30 healthy individuals.
Clinical parameters were assessed for all. Subgingival
plaque samples were collected for identification of
A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. intermedia using
polymerase chain reaction. Prevalence for P. intermedia
(83.3%) was high and A. actinomycetemcomitans
(6.7%) low in the total subject population. P.
intermedia and A. actinomycetemcomitans were more
prevalent in diseased (86.7%, 10% respectively) than
in healthy (80%, 3.33% respectively) subjects. A.
actinomycetemcomitans was detected in 15% Indians,
5% Malays but none of the Chinese subjects whereas
P. intermedia was detected in 90% Malays, 85%
Indians and 75% Chinese subjects. No significant
association between presence of A. actinomycetemcomitans
and P. intermedia with race and
periodontal disease status was found. Only A.
actinomycetemcomitans had a significant association
with clinical attachment level (CAL) (p < 0.05). In
conclusion, in this small subject group, none of the
pathogens were associated with race and periodontal
disease status and only A. actinomycetemcomitans had
a significant association with CAL.

Korean Journal of Radiology 2009;10(3):303-306
A giant vertebral notochordal rest is a newly described, benign entity that is easily confused with a vertebral chordoma. As microscopic notochordal rests are rarely found in adult autopsies, the finding of a macroscopic vertebral lesion is a new entity with only seven previously presented cases. We report here radiological findings, including diffusion weighted images, of a patient with a giant notochordal remnant confined to the L5 vertebra, with an emphasis on its distinction from a chordoma.

Malaysian Journal of Microbiology 2016;12(6):455-462
Aims: Capsicum annuum (pepper) is one of the most important crops in the world. It contains an impressive list of
phytonutrients that were found to have disease-preventing and health-promoting properties. Today, they are grown
widely in many parts of the world as an important commercial crop. However, fungal infection is the main problem that
leads to the common pepper disruptive disease, known as the Anthracnose, which lowers the yields of this plant.
Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the growth, enzymatic antioxidant specific activities of catalase (CAT),
ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and guaiacol peroxidase (g-POD) as well as non-enzymatic antioxidants including ascorbic
acid, α-tocopherol and carotenoids content in C. annuum as a response to the fungal infections by Colletotrichum
capsici.
Methodology and results: The assays were conducted at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 weeks of fungal treatment periods. The
results showed that plant growth (plant height, leaves number, length and width, chlorophyll content) was significantly
lower in treated plants compared to controls. The CAT specific activity increased drastically at the early stages of the
experiment and decreased thereafter. In contrast, the APX and g-POD specific activity were initially lower, but increased
significantly at the later stages of the experiment. For the non-enzymatic antioxidants, the amount of ascorbic acid, α-
tocopherol and carotenoids content were significantly higher at the first week of treatment and slowly reduced
afterwards.
Conclusion, significance and impact of study: This study shows that fungal infection inhibited the growth of pepper
plants and the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants worked in concert to fight against the stress caused by the
fungal infection, with their different specific roles in removing and reducing the reactive oxygen species in stress
condition.

Objective:
Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is rarely detected at stage 1a. Most of the patients have a good prognosis and there are limited factors that affect their survival. In the present study, we evaluated the p16 and p53 gene expressions of stage 1a EOC patients. Prognostic effects of these gene expressions, as well as those of other factors on short term survival were analyzed.
Methods:
Our study included 29 patients. The specimens of the ovary with cancer were stained for p16 and p53. Gene expressions and other prognostic factors were evaluated.
Results:
The median age of the patients was 51 years (27–84). The mean numbers of dissected pelvic and paraaortic lymph nodes were 27 and 12, respectively. The mean follow-up time was 33.7±18.9 months. During this period, recurrence occurred in two patients. One of the patients had grade 2 mucinous carcinoma and died of the disease at month 12 after the recurrence occurred at month 7. The second patient had clear cell carcinoma and recurrence occurred at month 34. p16 and p53 gene expressions or other factors were not associated with overall survival (OS) or disease-free survival in the short term. The lower p16 positivity rate in the non-clear cell group was found to be statistically significant (P=0.003). Both p53 and p16 positivity rates were higher in the high-grade carcinoma.
Conclusion
The levels of none of the common prognostic factors, including those of p16 and p53 gene expression, were associated with the progression-free survival or OS of stage 1a in the short term. Appropriate surgical staging and non-omission of subclinical metastases seem to be of central importance.

International Neurourology Journal 2020;24(2):150-155
Purpose:
In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in patients with Behçet disease (BD) and to investigate the relationship between the severity of BD and LUTS.
Methods:
Fifty-five patients with BD were included in this study from January to December 2018. All patients received a detailed urological evaluation. Additionally, BD activity was investigated using the Behçet Disease Current Activation Form. The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form, 8-item overactive bladder questionnaire forms, uroflowmetry, and postvoid residual urine volume were evaluated.
Results:
The mean age of the patients was 42.6 years. The mean activity score of BD was 4.6±3.2 and the mean IPSS score was 7.3±7.3. Sex had no significant effect on the BD activity score. The BD activity score was significantly correlated with the IPSS score, frequency of daytime urination, nocturia, and urgency. It was also correlated with the presence and the severity of urinary incontinence and the effect of urinary incontinence on daily life. Peak flow rate, voided volume, and the postvoid residual urine volume were not correlated with the BD activity score.
Conclusions
LUTS were highly prevalent in patients with BD, and the severity and current activity of BD were correlated with frequency, nocturia, urgency, and urinary incontinence. Therefore, a urological evaluation of patients with BD in whom the activity and severity of the disease is elevated should be carried out comprehensively and patients should be managed accordingly.

Objective:
The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic value of lymph node ratio (LNR) in women with 2018 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage IIIC cervical cancer.
Methods:
In this retrospective dual-institutional study, a total of 185 node-positive cervical cancer patients who had undergone radical hysterectomy with systematic pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy were included. All of the patients received adjuvant chemoradiation after surgery. LNR was defined as the ratio of positive lymph nodes (LNs) to the total number of LNs removed. The patients were categorized into 2 groups according to LNR; LNR <0.05 and LNR ≥0.05. The prognostic value of LNR was evaluated with univariate log-rank tests and multivariate Cox regression models.
Results:
A total of 138 patients (74.6%) had stage IIIC1 disease and 47 (25.4%) patients had stage IIIC2 disease. With a median follow-up period of 45.5 months (range 3–135 months), the 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate was 62.5% whereas the 5-year overall survival (OS) rate was 70.4% for the entire study population. The 5-year DFS rates for LNR <0.05 and LNR ≥0.05 were 78.2%, and 48.4%, respectively (p<0.001). Additionally, the 5-year OS rates for LNR <0.05 and LNR ≥0.05 were 80.6%, and 61.2%, respectively (p=0.007). On multivariate analysis, LNR ≥0.05 was associated with a worse DFS (hazard ratio [HR]=2.12; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.15–3.90; p=0.015) and OS (HR=1.95; 95% CI=1.01–3.77; p=0.046) in women with stage IIIC cervical cancer.
Conclusions
LNR ≥0.05 seems to be an independent prognostic factor for decreased DFS and OS in stage IIIC cervical carcinoma.
