BACKGROUND: Our previous studies have demonstrated that cryopreserved bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) still maintain high survival rate, cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation potentials after thawing. However, this result needs confirmed in vivo environment. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of cryopreserved BMSCs and collagenic membrane BME-10X complex on type Ⅰ collagen synthesis in vivo. METHODS: Beagle dog BMSCs were cultured in vitro and cryopreserved for 12 months, which were thawed and prepared complexes with collagenic membrane. The complexes were cultured with mineralization induction medium or normal medium for 5 days, followed by implanting into nude mice. The specimens were harvested and analyzed by gross observation, histopathological and immunohistochemistry at 4 weeks after implantation. The collagenic membrane cultured with mineralization induction medium served as controls. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: In the control group, the boundary of collagenic membrane was distinctly, without cell growth around boundary or intra collagenic membrane, additionally, there was little type Ⅰ collagen. In the non-induction group, cells grew into collagenic membrane, trabes-like collagen formed, and type Ⅰ collagen distribution increased at 4 weeks. In the induction group, scaffold degraded, more cells grew, and plenty of collagen formed osteoid-like tissues. The distribution of typeⅠcollagen was obviously increased than that of other groups. The findings demonstrated that cryopreserved BMSCs possess strong osteogenic differentiation potentials after proliferation and induction combined with collagenic membranes in vitro.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the characteristics of exposure to iron oxide nanoparticles in workplace.
METHODSThe real-time particle number (NC), surface area (SAC), and mass (MC) concentrations of nanoparticles were measured in various locations of a selected workplace manufacturing iron oxide nanoparticles. The collected particles were analyzed for morphology and elemental composition.
RESULTSThe average NCs and SACs in milling site (16,566 pt/cm3, 106.082 µm2/cm3), packaging site (12,386 pt/cm3, 89.861 µm2/cm3), shipping site (13,808 pt/cm3, 102.071 µm2/cm3), and product storage room (17,192 pt/cm, 115.044 µm2/cm3) of the yellow powder (α-Fe2O3 . nH2O) were all significantly higher than the workplace background concentrations (11,420 pt/cm3, 85.026 µm2/cm3) (all P<0.05). The NC was highly correlated with the SAC (r= 0.784), while both NC and SAC were loosely correlated with the MC (r1=0.323, r2=0.331). Scanning electron microscopy revealed a spindle-like shape of the iron oxide nanoparticle; the chemical composition of the collected particles contained 19.33 weight percent iron (Fe).
CONCLUSIONThe milling site and product storage room of the yellow powder are exposed to a higher concentration of nanoparticles, which are mainly composed of iron oxide nanoparticles. The NC is highly correlated with the SAC.

Chinese Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism 2011;27(1):24-27
Objective To analyze the association of blood uric acid level with the severity of coronary artery stenotic changes, metabolic syndrome (MS), and its components. Methods A total of 343 individuals ( male 223,female 120) who underwent coronary angiography and had complete data on MS and serum uric acid were collected. The severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) was assessed by the coronary stenesis index (CSI). MS was diagnosed according to the Guideline on Prevention and Treatment of Blood Lipid Abnormality in Chinese Adults. Results (1)The mean uric acid level was significantly lower in women than in men [ ( 306.3±76.9 vs 358.9±85.2 ) μmol/L, P<0.01 ]. The prevalence of MS and its components showed no difference between men and women. (2) The uric acid level in women with 3 components was higher than those with1( P<0. 01 ) or 2 ( P<0.05 ) components of metabolic disorders, but not in men. (3) Quartiles of concentration of uric acid were computed. Compared with those in the lowest quartile of uric acid, women in the highest quartile had higher CSI score [ 7.0 (2.5-12.0) vs 2. 0( 0.0-6.0), P= 0. 025 ]. Moreover, the uric acid level was higher in women with multivessel lesions than nonCAD patients [ (327.0±81.9 vs 284.9±78.6) μmol/L, P = 0.033 ]. However, no correlation was found between uric acid level and the severity of coronary artery lesion in men. (4) Logistic regression showed that age (β=0.042, P=0. 007) and dyslipidemia(β=0.836, P=0. 037 ) were the independent risk factors of CAD in men, and hypertension(β=1. 127, P=0.039) and dyslipidemia(β=0.901, P=0.009)in women. Conclusions In women with higher uric acid level, the clustering of metabolic abnormalities was increased, and the coronary artery lesion was more severe. High uric acid level might be a marker of CAD for women.
