We have experienced 40 cases of the tibial shaft fractures treated with Küntscher nail from 1979 to 1986. Authors analysed these cases and our own experimental study concerned with the shape of Küntscher nail. The shape of Küntscher nail for the tibial shaft fractures should be designed according to the type and location of the fracture. The proximally bent and distally straight nail is used for the extension fracture, proximally and distally bent nail or entirely bent nail is inserted for the flexion fracture of the tibia. The large nail(over 13 mm in diameter) may produce injury to the patella because it has minimal flexibility. In order to permit easy driven down of nail and prevent this injury, the nail should b. bent into three to four segments and the length of the longest segment should not exceed the permissible length of straight nail (Permissible length is distance from entrance of nail to posterior cortex of the upper fragment, where tip of the (nail impinged-about 12cm) The midpoint of the middle segment of dual dent nail is placed at the fracture site. The middle segment of the nail may bent anteriorly for flexion fracture and posteriorly for extension fracture, securing the dynamic fixation of the fracture.

Since Hadra first used metalic internal fixation in the human spine with wire loop in 1895, various implants have been used. Knodt rod was designed on the principle that the distraction produced a localized flexion attitude in the area to be fused, thus increasing the size of the intervertebral foramina and decreasing the risk of intraforaminal encroachment on the nerve root. We have performed the posterolateral fusion with or without Knodt rod as a primary procedure in spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis of lumbar spine, which required arthrodesis of more than one level. For period of 8 1/2 years' from Sep. 1977 to Apr. 1986, 12 cases of diseased spine were treated with posterolateral fusion without Knodt rod, and 13 cases were treated with posterolateral fusion using Knodt rod. We compared with two groups, and the following results were obtained. 1. Solid bony fusion was 100% in posterolateral fusion with Knodt rod, and 92% without Knodt rod. 2. An average period of post-operative immobilization was 2 months in cases with Knodt rod, and 2.5 months without Knodt rod. 3. In posterolateral fusion with Knodt rod, 4 cases with the root symptoms were all improved. In posterolateral fusion without Knodt rod, 6 cases with root symptoms, were all improved. But in 1 case without the root symptoms, developed the root symptoms. 4. No significant changes in radiologic evaluation were found between posterolateral fusion with Knodt rod and without Knodt rod. 5. Post-operative complications developed in 4 cases (31%) with Knodt rod, and 6 cases (50%) without Knodt rod. 6. Clinically, the satisfactory results were 100% with Knodt rod, and 83% without Knodt rod.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1988;23(2):494-498
After amputation of the extremities, many patients developed problematic sequelae such as loss of function, cosmetic point of view, and psychiatric problems. For period of eleven yesrs from 1976 to 1986, we performed amputation of the fingers in 461 persons, and problematic sequelae were noted in 181 cases of 105 persons. The results were as follows : 1. Causes of the amputation were trauma, infection, burn, frost bite, tumors, and vascular diseases in that order of frequency. 2. Problematic sequelae of the fingers were scar contracutre, scanty soft tissue, neuroma, bony spur formation, deformities, hypersensitivity, ulceration, phantom pain, and depression in that order of frequency. 3. Problematic sequelae in amputation of the fingers could be classified as functional, cosmetic and psychiatric problems. In most instances, the primary concern of a particular patient was amputation itself, and this kind of psychiatric problems should be taken into consideration in the treatment of the amputated fingers.

One case of right duplicated ureter associated with single ectopic ureteral orifice to the vaginal vestibule in a 14-year old girl was presented. In a case, while normal self-voiding, urinary leakage has been complained since infant without other urinary symptoms and she was treated with right ureteronecystostomy in Paquin's method.

Korean Journal of Preventive Medicine 1993;26(4):541-550
In order to investigate psychological and behavioral characteristics homosexuals and to present evidence that homosexuals are in danger of HIV infection in Korea, this study was done by self-administered questionnaire and then direct interview with the 28(35%) HIV infected homosexual/bisexuals of 79 HIV infected persons reported in 1992. Homosexuals without heterosexual activity were 9 and the others were bisexuals. Sixty-five percent of respondents had a guilty conscience for their homosexual activity. Twenty(71%) were in twenties and 5(18%) in thirties. Twelve(43%) were detected via health card checking by health office, 21% by blood donation, 18% by hospital visit, and 7% by partner notification. Motivations for homosexual activity were curiosity(36%), temptation or recommendation(14%) and compulsion(11%). Eighteen(72%) never used condom on anal sex. Nine of 26 respondents had experience for anal sex with foreigners. Fourteen(54%) of 26 respondents had history for sexually transmitted diseases. Fightly percent did not have sexual contact after HIV infection and the others usually used condom. It was confirmed that over 57% of the respondents were infected within 1 year before HIV diagnosis and over 82% within 2 years. These data suggest that HIV infection among homosexual group is rapidly spreading.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1970;8(2):63-68
One case of malignant acanthosis nigricans associated with internal malignany and oral florid papilloma has been presented and reviewed the subject of malignant acanthosis nigricans. The patient who was 34 year old man had been affected generalixed dark brownish hyperpigmentation with papillomatoses especially on forehead, neck, axillae, umbilical area, anogenital area, webs of fingers, palms and soles. And characteristically it was associated with severe florid papilloma on mucous membrane such as buccal mucosa, lip and glans penis. Histopathologically, internal malignancy was confirmed metastatic adenocarcinoma of stomach after autopsy, although previous biopsy finding was squamous cell carcinoma when explorative laparatomy was done. The response to Bleomycin, new antibiotic anticancer drug, followed by intravenous injection is good and satisfying. But the patient died due to sudden pulmonary hemorrhage which are serious side effect of Bleomycin.

The Korean Journal of Parasitology 1964;2(3):183-188
The question of infectivity and prevalence of Clonorchis sinensis in Cheju province (Quelpart Island) was arisen to authors since the several surveys on the endemic diseases were performed in this island. Therefore, authors decided to solute this question. Then the survey on the possible second intermediate host of Clonorchis sinensis was performed and reported already with negative finding. At present time, authors carried out the collection of all kinds of fresh-water snails through all areas of this island, to confirm the presence or not of Parafossarulus manchouricus, the only first intermediate host of Clonorchis sinensis in Korea . And the following results were obtained. The fresh-water snails collected in the survey were Semisulcospira libertina Gould and Lymnaea ollula Gould. Parafossarulus manchouricus Bourguigant was not collected in this island. It is confirmed that the Clonorchis sinensis can not be prevalent in this island.
