There are evidences that occlusal splint therapy is critical to diagnose hidden skeleto-occlusal disharmonies in malocclusion patients and capable of enhancing stability after orthodontic treatment. In addition, evidences have implicated occlusal splint therapy in condylar positional changes during TMJ disorder treatment. In view of these evidences, this study was performed to investigate the effect of occlusal splint therapy on condylar positional changes in malocclusion patients and the possible clinical application of the occlusal splint as an additional orthodontic tool. For this study, 8 Angle's Class I malocclusion patients, who had centric occlusion-centric relation discrepancy within 1.0 mm and had no clinical symptoms of TMJ disorder, were selected as control group. And 22 malocclusion patients who had centric occlusion-centric relation discrepancy over 1.0mm were selected and subdivided as Class I Malocclusion group, Class II div. 1 malocclusion group, Class II div. 2 malocclusion group, Open bite group, and Mandibular asymmetry group. For each subject the occlusal splint with mutually protected type of occlusal scheme was applied for 3 months. Condylar positions in centric relation and centric occlusion were measured using Panadent articulators and Panadent condylar position indicator (CPI) before and after occlusal splint therapy. On the basis of this study, the following conclusions might be drawn: 1. In control group, Class II div. 2 malocclusion group, and mandibular assymetry group, there were no significant differences in condylar positions before and after occlusal splint therapy. 2. In Class I malocclusion group, condyles were moved 0.27 +/- 0.45 mm forward (p<0.05) and 0.98 +/- 0.25mm upward (p<0.01) after occlusal splint therapy. 3. In Class I malocclusion group, condyles were moved 0.24 +/- 0.21mm backward (p<0.05) and 1.01 +/- 0.33mm upward (p<0.01) after occlusal splint therapy. 4. In open bite group, condyles were moved 1.24 +/- 0.30 mm upward (p<0.01) after occlusal splint therapy. 5. In both control and experimental groups, there were no significant differences in lateral condylar positions before and after occlusal splint therapy.

A 23 year-old female with skeleto-dentoalveolar protrusion of maxilla, minor broken contact points between anterior teeth, and missing of lower 1st molars, has been treated with multibanded edgewise technique. After treatment of 14 months, she has gained functional overbite-overjet relationship and facial harmony due to the retraction of upper anterior teeth. Root resorption was slight. Especially, us ing the space of missed lower 1st molars instead of extracting lower premolars, expected and favorable results were obtained.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the interrelationship of the maxillary interincisal diastema, spacing and crowing to the type of superior labial frenum and the type of intermaxillary suture by analyzing histories, intraoral radiographs, orthopantomographs, intraoral slide films, and dental casts. The data for this study were compiled from 500 outpatients of the Department of Orthodontics, Infirmary of Dental College, Seoul National University. The following conclusions were obtained: 1. The occurrence of maxillary interincisal diastema in the permanent dentition decreased rapidly compared with that in the mixed dentition. And there was no sex difference in the occurrence of diastema in the both dentitions. 2. Frenum attachment remained relatively constant between the two dentitions but assumed a highter level in the permanent dentition than in the mixed dentition. 3. Except suture type D which was not yet fused completely, there was no significant difference in the distribution of suture type between the mixed dentition and the permanent dentition. 4. Frenum and suture type were highly related; frenum types 5 and 6 were associated with suture type III and V. 5. In the permanent dentition, frenum type 5 and 6 and suture types III and IV occurred more frequently in the spacing group than in the normal or crowding group. 6. The relationship between the diastema and frenum types 5 and 6 and suture types III and IV showed a strong correlation.

The Romberg's syndrome is characterized by unilateral facial hemiatrophy. Romberg's syndrome becomes manifest in 10 or 20 decades, and involves skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle, cartilage and bone of one side of the face that will eventually lead to facial asymmetry. In one eye with Romberg's syndrome. Horner's syndrome, enophthalmos. mydriasis, heterochromia iridium, ptosis, superficial corneal erosion, blepharophimosis, oculomotor palsies, and nystagmus were found. A 20 year old man (Korean) was found to have Romberg's syndrome.

Leptospirosis has been known as endemic disease in Korea since 1984. Wild rodent, mostly Apodemus agrarius, has been known as an important source of leptospiral infection especially in rainy circumstances in harvest reason of rural area. The infection rates of Leptospira interrogans in field rodents, Apodemus agrarius, was investigated by culture and PCR detection of leptospiral DNA, and compared with previous data. Furthermore, the serogroup and serovar were investigated. Two hundred twenty two Apodemus agrarius were captured during October to December 1996. Spirohaetes were isolated from 22 (9.9%) and leptospiral DNA was detected in an additional six rodents (12.6%). Subsequent cross-agglutinin absorption test, monoclonal antibody reactivity classified 21 cultures among 22 isolates as Leptospira interrogans serogroup Icterohemorrhagiae serovar lai. The above data did not differ from previous survey in 1984 to 1987. There was no significant change of Leptospira interrogans infection in field rodents in Korea.

PURPOSE: We compared the bony arrangements of the forefoot in 2 different years, 1982 and 2004, to determine any changes with time period of 22 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The radiographs of 200 normal Korean adults, 100 male and 100 female volunteers, were evaluated both in 1982 and 2004. The radiographic results were evaluated with as follows; hallux valgus angle (HVA), intermetatarsal angle (IMA), morphology of metatarsal head and relative anterior protrusion of the metatarsals and the phalanges. The mean ages were 38 years (23-52years) in 1982, and 37 years (24-50years) in 2004. RESULTS: The mean of HVA decreased from 15.6 degrees in 1982 to 14.3 degrees in 2004 (p=0.047), and the mean of IMA increased from 8.0 degrees in 1982 to 9.4 degrees in 2004 (p=0.031). The morphology of metatarsal head and relative anterior protrusion of the metatarsals and the phalanges were not different between the two study years. CONCLUSION: Comparing with those of 1982 measurements, we found an increase of IMA and a decrease of HVA. A prospective study may be needed to illuminate course of the changes.
