OBJECTIVETo explore the clinical outcomes of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) in treating osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF).
METHODSFrom January 2007 to February 2010, the data of 40 patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture underwent treatment were retrospectively analyzed. Of them,20 patients were treated with PVP (PVP group), there were 8 males and 12 females with an average age of (66.37 +/- 2.34) years old (54 to 81); 20 patients were treated with PKP (PKP group), there were 11 males and 9 females with an average of (65.12 +/- 3.21) years old (56 to 79). Postoperative at 1 week, 12 weeks, 1 year, pain and daily life function were respectively assessed by visual analogue scale (VAS) and Barthel index (BI); and anterior height of responsibility vertebra, Cobb angle were measured by X-rays.
RESULTSIn PVP group, 1 case complicated with bone cement leakage without clinical symptoms and no operation to treat. No postoperative infection and deep vein thrombosis were found between two groups. All patients were followed up more than 1 year, pain and daily life function has obviously improved than preoperative (P < 0.01); and there was no significant difference on 1 week, 12 weeks, 1 year after operation (P > 0.05); there was no significant difference between two groups (P > 0.05). In PVP group, there was no significant difference in anterior height of responsibility vertebra, Cobb angle before and after operation;and in PKP group, postoperative data has obviously improved than preoperative (P < 0.01), but there was no significant difference postoperative at 1 week, 12 weeks, 1 year (P > 0.05); there was no significant difference between two groups at 1 week, 12 weeks, 1 year after operation.
CONCLUSIONBoth the methods can obviously relieve pain and completely or partly recover daily life function in treating OVCF. But PKP has advantages of recovery of anterior height of responsibility vertebra and correction of Cobb angle, especially for serious compression.

Microbiology 1992;0(01):-
Lactic acid production and antagonistic property of five strains of LAB isolated from piglet intestine were investigated. The results showed that among all strains L5 exhibited the most rapid production and highest amount of lactic acid in the culture. Consequently, the pH in L5 culture showed the fast decline, with the final value significantly lower than those of other cultures. Strain L1 showed the least production of lactic acid and highest pH among all strains. Culture supernatants of the five strains showed different degrees of antagonistic effect against pathogenic E. coli K88, K99, 987P, O141, E1, and S. aureus. When taking out the effect of the acid, the culture supernatants still showed 22%~53% inhibitory effect, suggesting that the bacteria produced other inhibitory substances apart from lactic acid. The inhibitory effect of the culture supernatant was above 92% after heat treatment and above 85% when treated with proteases.

Objective To explore the inhibitory effect of Oldenlandia diffusa extract on colorectal cancer angiogenesis in BALB/c mice. Methods Thirty-two BALB/c mice with subcutaneous CT26 colon cancer animal model were randomly equally divided into four groups, including the control group (groupⅠ,saline 0.1 mL/(10. d), O. diffusa ethanol extract of 90 mg/(kg.d) (groupⅡ), O. diffusa ethanol extract of 180 mg/(kg.d) (groupⅢ) and O. diffusa ethanol extract of 360 mg/(kg.d) (group Ⅳ) . Each group of mice were treated with intragastric administration of law administration 12 days after vaccination, then stopped and continue fed to 32 days, and the mice were killed. Micro-vascular dense ( MVD) was observed and countered under the microscopy by immunohistory chemistry. Results The murine colon tumor volumes of GroupⅡ,ⅢandⅣwere significantly less than that of groupⅠ,with significant difference ( <0.05) . The tumor microvessel density values of four groups was (7.83±2.87), (5.32±1.27), (1.77±0.70) and (1.87±0.68),respectively. The number of tumor blood vessels in GroupⅡ,Ⅲ and Ⅳ were significantly less than that of Ⅰ group, with significant difference ( <0.05) . Conclusion Within a certain dose range, the ethanol extract of O. diffusa can significantly inhibit the mouse colon cancer and the mechanism may be realated to inhibiting tumor angiogenesis.

OBJECTIVETo extract two kinds of phenols 4-hydroxy-3, 5-dimethoxy-4-(2-oxopropyl) cyclohexa-2, 5-dien-l-one and 6-methoxy-5,7-dihydroxy coumarin (named as I and H compounds respectively) from Ajania salicifolia and to investigate their antioxidation and cytotoxicity to tumors and explore their pro-apoptosis mechanism.
METHODSThe antioxidant activities of two compounds were assessed by ABTS and DPPH radical-scavenging assays. Two compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against human chronic myelogenous leukemia (K562) cells using the MIT assay. The expression of NF-kappaB P65 mRNA in K562 apoptotic cells was measured by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), real-time quantitative PCR. In addition, protein expression levels of the NF-ICB P65, p-Akt, Fas, P-catenina and E-cadherin were also measured by Western blot.
RESULTS(1) We found that compound I displayed significant inoxidizability, while compound II had no obvious antioxidizability. (2) In cytotoxicity experiments, compound I didn't display cytotoxicity while compound H displayed obvious cytotoxicity. (3) Compared with the blank group, the expression of NF-kappaB P65 mRNA in K562 cell after treatment with compound II was obviously up-regulated. (4) Compared with the blank group, the expression levels of NF-kappaB P65, Fas, beta-catenina and E-cadherin were significantly increased in compound II treated groups and it appeared obvious dose-effect relationship between the expression of protein and drug concentration.
CONCLUSIONTwo phenols have obvious antioxidizability and cytotoxicity respectively. On the one hand, the tumor-suppressing mechanism of compound II maybe act by up-regulation the expression of NF-kappaB P65 and Fas protein; thereby, affecting the classical Fas apoptosis signaling pathways. On the other hand, it can also up-regulate the expression of protein beta-catenin and E-cadherin, which participate in the adhesion between cells, and accordingly, playing an important role in preventing the proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells.

Objective To establish and verify the prediction model for ischemic cardiovascular disease(ICVD)among the elderly population who were under the current health care programs. Methods Statistical analysis on data from physical examination, hospitalization of the past years, from questionnaire and telephone interview was carried out in May, 2003. Data was from was randomly selected to generate both module group and verification group. Baseline data was induced to make the verification group into regression model of module group and to generate the predictive value. Distinguished ability with area under ROC curve and the predictive veracity were verified through comparing the predictive incidence rate and actual incidence rate of every deciles group by Hosmer- Lemeshow test. Predictive veracity of the prediction model at population level was verified through comparing the predictive 6-year incidence rates of ICVD with actual 6-year accumulative incidence rates of ICVD with error rate calculated. Results The samples included 2271 males over the age of 65 with 1817 people for modeling population and 454 for verified population. All of the samples were stratified into two layers to establish hierarchical Cox proportional hazard regression model, including one advanced age group(greater than or equal to 75 years old), and another elderly group(less than 75 years old). Data from the statically analysis showed that the risk factors in aged group were age, systolic blood pressure, serum creatinine level, fasting blood glucose level, while protective factor was high density lipoprotein; in advanced age group, the risk factors were body weight index, systolic blood pressure, serum total cholesterol level, serum creatinine level, fasting blood glucose level, while protective factor was HDL-C. The area under the ROC curve (AUC)and 95%CI were 0.723 and 0.687-0.759 respectively. Discriminating power was good. All individual predictive ICVD cumulative incidence and actual incidence were analyzed using Hosmer-Lemshow test, x 2=1.43, P=0.786, showing that the predictive veracity was good. Conclusion The stratified Cox Hazards Regression model was used to establish prediction model of the aged male population under a certain health care program. The common prediction factor of the two age groups were: systolic blood pressure, serum creatinine level, asting blood glucose level and HDL-C. Thc area under the ROWC curve of the verification group was 0.723, showing that the distinguished ability was good and the predict ability at the individual level and at the group level were also satisfactory. It was feasible to using Cox Proportional Hazards Regression Model for predicting the population groups.

Objective To investigate the 6-year accumulative incidence rate of ischemic cardiovascular disease (ICVD) and its related risk factors. Methods Baseline population was all from an elderly population with members all born before 1-1,1938 and under health care programm.Data was recorded in a database of a hospital and baseline of subjects under research was aged >65years. People that had had ICVD at baseline were excluded. Risk factors under research would include: age at the baseline study, gender, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, serum cholesterol level, serum triglyceride level, serum high-density lipoprotein level, serum triglyceride level, serum apolipoprotein A1 level, history of diabetes mellitus and cigarette smoking etc. Single factor analysis was carried out using person-years as time of study, then calculating the person-year incidence and the accumulative incidence rate at different levels related to baseline risk factors.Multivariate analysis was under Cox Proportional Hazards Regression Model. Results Baseline population included 2271 elderly men, with the 6-year cumulative prevalence rate of ICVD as 23.56%, and the person-year prevalence rate was 45.41‰. Single factor analysis showed that the ICVD events positively related to variables which including systolic blood pressure, body mass index, serum cholesterol level and serum triglyceride level, serum apolipoprotein A1 level, status of diabetes mellitus and cigarette smoking. The ICVD events negatively related to variables as serum high-density lipoprotein levcl and serum creatinine level. Results of multivariate analysis showed that high systolic pressure, diabetes mellitus, serum creatinine level, Body Mass Index were the main risk factors. The serum high-density lipoprotein level served as the main protective factor. Conclusion The aged male population under health care programme was high in the ICVD prevalence rate, suggesting that programmes as controlling blood pressure, blood glucose, and increasing serum high-density lipoprotein levels were effective measures to decrease the ICVD events.
