This study was carried out to investigate the response of interphase Y chromosome to some drugs and toxins by observing the rate of leukocytes showing Y-body in the peripheral blood. The interphase Y chromosomes of blood leukocytes were stained with quinacrine mustard and the animals used were rabbits, rats and guinea pies. Y-bodies of leukocytes were studied in the animals as well as in man. Changes in positive rate of Y-body in leukocytes and total leukocyte count were observed in the rabbits administered with drug or toxin. The results concerning the rate of Y-body were as follows: 1. Y-bodies were present in the blood leukocytes of the animals. However positive rates in mononuclear and polymorphonuclear leukocytes were lower in animals that in man. The positive rate of Y-body was higher in mononuclear leukocytes than in polymorphonuclear leukocytes in the animals as in man. 2. Bacterial toxins such as typhoid, D.P.T. and cholera vaccines and anticancer drugs such as busulfan and endoxan reduced the positive rates of Y-body both in mononuclear leukocytes and in polymorphonuclear leukocytes. 3. Benzene known as bone marrow toxin reduced the positive rate of Y-body in mononuclear leukocytes, but not that in polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Quinine known as general protoplasmic poison reduced the positive rate of Y-body not only in mononuclear leukocytes but also in polymorphonuclear leukocytes. 4. Antibiotics such as tetracycline and chloramphenicol and steroid hormones such as estrogen, testosterone and prednisolone had no effects on the positive rate of Y-body both in mononuclear leukocytes and in polymorphonuclear leukocytes.

Total hip replacement is an available rnethod of treatment for various causes of disabled hips in adults, especially in painful stiff hips. In many cases, malposition has led to degenrative changes in the opposite hip, the lumbar spine or knee, often with severe loss of function due to pain. Between March, 1979 and February, 1983, twenty hips in sixteen patients with painful and deformed hips were operated at Kosin Medical College, and we obtained relif of pain and increase of range of motion of the hip joints. Furthermore we found relife of adjacent joint pain in several cases, and in addition correction of inequality of leg lenght.

Three cases of giant hydronephrosis containing 9,800 cc, 3,800cc, and 1,300cc, Developed in the Korean soldiers are presented. The important clinical, laboratory and x-ray features are discussed. Brief review of literature was also made.

We observed and analysed relating problems concerned to 21 patients of the acute carbamate intoxications, visited the emergency room of cheonju Presbyterian Medical center, from Oct 1993 to july 1996. The results were as follows : 1) Male was more prevalent than female with a ratio of 2:1 in sex distribution and the highest incidence of age group was in third decade and sixth decade of age in male sex 2) the most common drug of intoxication was deltanet in 7 cases, the remainders were bassa in 3 cases, b.p in 3 cases, huradan, qratel and methomyl in 2 cases, each, in order of frequency. 3)Among the exposed carbamate in 13 patients with respiratory failure, detanet was the most common in 6 cases, b.p in 3 cases, methomyl in 2 cases, bassa and huradan each in 1 case. 4) The serum ChE activity of patients were significantly reduced compare to normal.8 patients were between 20~50% of normal,8 patients were above 50% of normal, 4 patients were between 10~20% of normal, only 1 patient was below 10~20% of normal. 5) In 13 patients with respiratory failure, seam ChE activities were below 50% of normal. 6) In all patients with respiratory failure except 1 case time to recovery of the respiratory failure was below 48hrs. 7) Mean dose of atropine administered within first full atropinization and fist 24 hours was significantly higher in patients with than patients without respiratory failure in staitistics(29.3+/-23.3mg, 54.5+/-49.5mg VS 7.6+/-3.6mg, 13.6+/-6.9m) 8) 3 patients among a total of 21 patients expired. So that motality rate was 14.3%. Among the expired cases, 1 patients discontinued treatment due to economic problems and only 2 patients died in hospital during the treatment.

The flexor tendon injuries of the finger are very difficult to treat satisfactorily. Early treatment is desirable, but not always posaible. In addition, joint stiffness and limitation in gliding of the tendon caused by adhesion, make the problem more complex. From 1978 until 1988, 13 patients (14 eases) underwent operations for free tendon graft, and 10 patients (13 eases) for staged tendon graft at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, National Medieal Center. They have been followed up for clinical study, and the result was summarized as follows:1. Old flexor tendon injuries were common in the teen and twenties, especially in male. 2. They occurred in the index (10 Cases, 37.0%) and middle (8 cases, 29.6%) fingers most commony, especially zone II (62.9%). 3. The result was evalusted according to the method designed by Strickland and Glovac. In 19 out of 27 cases, satisfactory result (excellent and good) was yielded. 4. In cause, deep laceration by sharp object was better in the result than crushing injury. 5. The interval between the injury and the operation ranged from 1 month through 11 years, averaging 16 months, and is supposed to have little relation to the result. 6. The preoperative state is supposed to have much relation to postoperative result, judging from 100% of satisfactory result in Grade I compared with 40% in Grade V according to Boyes preoperative classification. 7. Little difference is seen in the result between free tendon graft and staged tendon graft. And 5 cases complicated by adhesion, rupture of grafted tendon and wound infection yielded poor result.

Plgmented villonodular synovitis is a benigh lesion that develops in joint lining and is characterized by an exuberant inflammation. Many authors have discussed etiology, clinical and radiological features, pathology and treatment regarding the disease. This occurs most commonly in the knee joint as a monoarticular proliferative process, but rarely in the hip joint. It is a nonneoplastic disease but may develop as an aggressive local process with bone and joint destruction. Sometimes clinician can not detect it in early time because of its nonspecific clinical findings and misdiagnose it as sarcomatous process. So, early diagnosis of hip joint involvement is necessary because destruction of the femoral head and acetabulum is the ultimate outcome if treatment is not intiated. We report two cases of pigmented villonodular synovitis involving the hip joint, which were diagnosed and treated in our department.

Tennis elbow is common, and offen disabling problem even in daily living;conservative treatments commonly make satisfactory results, but recurrence is frequent and discouraging. So, surgical treatments are considered in certain cases. The authors report the retrospective analysis of 15 patients treated by nirschl and pettrone procedure. Patients were evaluated with Nirschl and Pettrone assessment method at an average 10.3 months(range, 5 to 32 months0 after surgery. thirteen of 15(87%) patients had more than fair postoperative rating. Two patients had postoperative complications;one with infection and the other with transient mild limitation of elbow motion. No postoperative deterioration of the clinical state was seen. And biopsy specimens of all case showed degenerative changes. Resection of the degenerated site of tendon origin of the humeral epcondyle(The Nirschl and Pettrone procedure) yield satisfactory results in properly selected patients.
