Academic Journal of Second Military Medical University 2010;31(2):144-147
Objective: To investigate the protective effect of deferoxamine preconditioning against hypoxia injury in astrocytes and the underlying mechanisms. Methods: Astrocytes were cultured under ischemia stress, which was mimicked by oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD) with deferoxamine. Astrocytes were divided into three groups: normally cultured group; Deferoxamine pretreated group: astrocytes were pretreated with Deferoxamine and then treated with Deferoxamine OGD; and OGD group; astrocytes were treated with Deferoxamine OGD. The cell viability examination, the ratio of condensed nuclei, and the morphological changes were used to assess the protective effect of deferoxamine. The expression of HIF-1a and EPO protein and mRNA in astrocytes was examined by immunofluorescence staining and RT-PCR, respectively. Results: The morphology of AS in the deferoxamine pretreated group kept intact. AS viability in deferoxamine pretreated group was 58% of the normally cultured group, and that in the OGD group was 25% of the normally cultured group (P<0. 05). The ratio of condensed nuclei in deferoxamine pretreated group was 38% and that in OGD group was 30% (P<0. 05). Immunofluorescence staining found that expression HIF-1a, and EPO protein appeared in cultured astrocytes after deferoxamine pretreatment. RT-PCR confirmed that mRNA of HIF-1a and EPO was up-regulated after deferoxamine pretreatment. Conclusion: Deferoxamine preconditioning can protect the astrocytes from hypoxia damage, which is related to deferoxamine-induced increase of HIF-1a and EPO expression.

AIM: To investigate the difference of cognitive impairment and depression between age-related macular degeneration ( AMD ) group and the control group patients. ·METHODS: A prospective case-control study was performed from November 2014 to August 2016 in the hospital for AMD patients and sex-matched control group. The Mini-Mental State Examination ( MMSE) and the Geriatric Depression Scale ( GDS ) score of each patient were collected for statistical analyzing. ·RESULTS: There were total 84 cases ( 168 eyes ) included in the study. The difference of visual acuity between the two group was statistically significant ( F=8. 953, P=0. 004) by baseline data analyzing. There were no significant differences in MMSE scores between the two groups according to educational status ( P>0. 05 ) , while the prevalence of cognitive impairment in each group was statistically significant (x2 =4. 14, P=0. 042). The difference of GDS scores, prevalence of total and mild depression between two groups were both statistically significant (F=5. 852, P=0. 018; x2=6. 372, P=0. 012; x2 = 5. 674, P = 0. 017 ). However, there was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of moderate to severe depression (x2=0. 672, P=0. 412). ·CONCLUSION: AMD patients have a higher prevalence of depression. Although MMSE score differences were not statistically significant in subgroup analysis by educational levels, AMD patients are more likely to have cognitive impairment overall.

The morphological indexes of the Scuophularia ningpoensis seedlings including the longth, diameter and weight were measured, clustering analysis was used to set up the standard quality grading of seedlings of S. Ningpoensis by SPSS. Field experiment was carried out to measure the indicators of plants growth and development, the yield and the quality. The results showed that the growth and yield of class I seedlings were better than those of class II and III. The content of main active ingredients was affected barely by seedlings classification. To ensure the quality, class II seedlings or above should be used for plantation. The established quality classification standard of S. ningpoensis seedlings was scientific and feasible, and provides the basis for the standardized cultivation of S. ningpoensis.
