We had previously reported the height-weight formula for the estimation of body surface area of adult Chinese males (this journal 6(2):87, 1984). In this study, by using the same paper cast method, a formula for the adult Chinese females was obtained from the data of 44 healthy subjects (age 18-45) coming from 15 provinces. The mean body weight, height and surface area measured were 52.13?6.22 kg, 159.3?5.18 cm and 1.546?0.105 m2 respectively. The formula thus derived was: body surface area (m2) = 0.00586H (cm) +0.0126W (kg)-0.0461. The value calculated from it was 0.03% less than the value actually measured on an average. The percentage of various body regions to the total body surface area was as follows: head, 6.33; trunk (including neck), 28.27; upper arms, 8.29; forearms, 6.65; hands, 4.52; thighs (including buttocks), 27.40; calves, 12.83 and feet, 6.65.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of affective disorder in Kunming City. Methods: A rep-resentative sample of the Kunming general population composed of 5033 individuals aged 15 years and older was se-lecteed randomly by the method of probability proportional to size (PPS), and then was interviewed with the World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview Version 2.1 (CIDI, version 2.1).The preva-lence of affective disorder was investigated. And the relative factors, onset age and comorbid were also analyzed. Results: The 30-duy prevalence of affective disorder was 0.98%, the 12-month prevalence was 1.22%,and the lifetime prevalence was 1.89%. The results of the single factor analysis showed that the urban residents, the persons who divorced, limited divorced or lost one's spouse, and the unemployed or the higher educated were more vulnerable to depression. The results of the multifactor analysis showed that the rural residents and the males were protective factors to affective disorder. Different subunits of affective disorder had different onset ages. The onset age of 90% bipolar disorder patients was before 25 years old. The patients before 50 years old was risky to dysthy-mia. The patients with major depression had a lifetime risk of onset. Anxiety disorder and pain disorder would in-crease the risk of affective disorder. Conclusion: The findings show that the prevalence of the affective disorder is lower than the same kind survey abroad while it is close to the domestic's. More attention and intervention should been given to the urban population, the females, the singles, the unemployed, and the higher educationed.

Objective To compare the efficacy of oxycodone versus sufentanil for intravenous analgesia after radical resection of pulmonary carcinoma performed via video-assisted thoracoscope. Methods One hundred fifty-four patients of both sexes, aged 18-64 yr, with body mass index of 18-25 kg/m2, of American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status Ⅰ or Ⅱ , scheduled for elective radical resection of pulmonary carcinoma performed via video-assisted thoracoscope, were randomly divided into either sufentanil group (group S, n=76) or oxycodone group (group O, n =78) using a random number table. The 2 groups received combined intravenous-inhalational anesthesia. When postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) score ≥ 4, sufentanil 5 μg or oxycodone 2 mg was injected intravenously, and the administration was repeated when necessary until VAS score ≤ 3.Patient-controlled intravenous analgesia (PCIA) was then used for postoperative analgesia (lasting for 48 h).PCIA solution contained tropisetron 20 mg and sufentanil 200 μg in 100 ml of normal saline in group S.PCIA solution contained tropisetron 20 mg and oxycodone 50 mg in 100 ml of normal saline in group O.The PCIA pump was set up to deliver a 2 ml bolus dose with a 10 min lockout interval and background infusion at a rate of 1 ml/h.VAS score was maintained ≤3.When VAS scores ≥4, morphine 10 mg injected intramuscularly was used as rescue analgesic. The requirement for rescue analgesic, level of patient's satisfaction with analgesia, and analgesia-related adverse events were recorded. Results The incidence of nausea and vomiting was significantly lower in group O than in group S (P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the requirement for rescue analgesic, level of patient's satisfaction, and incidence of dizziness and over-sedation between the two groups (P>0.05).No patients developed respiratory depression and pruritus in the two groups. Conclusion Compared with sufentanil, oxycodone can produce similar analgesic efficacy when used for PCIA after radical resection of pulmonary carcinoma performed via video-assisted thoracoscope, with lower incidence of nausea and vomiting.

Objective: To study the effects of triptolide-medicated serum on secretory function of adrenocortical cells isolated from rats. Methods: Thirty SD rats were randomly divided into control group, prednisone group, and low-, medium- and high-dose triptolide groups. Rats were administered with normal saline, prednisone and low-, medium- and high-dose triptolide respectively by gastrogavage to prepare sera containing drugs. Primary adrenocortical cells were isolated from normal male rats and cultured with sera containing drug for 48 hours. Expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was observed by immunohistochemical method and number of PCNA-positive cells was counted. Ultrastructure of adrenocortical cells was observed under a transmission electron microscope. Content of corticosterone in supernatant of adrenocortical cell culture was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was employed to investigate the expression of 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3beta-HSD) mRNA. Results: As compared with the control group, content of corticosterone in supernatant of adrenocortical cell culture and expression of 3beta-HSD mRNA were significantly increased in the triptolide-treated groups, and the numbers of PCNA-positive cells were increased in the medium- and high-dose triptolide groups, however, they were decreased in the prednisone group. Conclusion: Triptolide-medicated serum can increase the secretion of corticosterone in rat adrenocortical cells in vitro.

Objective:To investigate the effects of modified electroconvulsive therapy(MECT)in combina-tion with medication and medication alone on relapse and cognitive functioning in patients with major depressive disorder(MDD).Methods:Totally 324 patients meeting the diagnostic criteria ofthe DSM-5 for MDD were select-ed and divided into combined MECT group(n=117)and non-combined MECT group(n=207).At baseline and 5 years of follow-up,both groups completed the General Information Questionnaire,Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MoCA),and Hamilton Depression Scale(HAMD)to analyze associations between cognitive functioning and mul-tiple variables. Results:At baseline, there were no significant differences between the two groups on general infor-mation,MoCA,and HAMD scores(Ps>0.05).After 5 years of follow-up,the relapse rate was lower in the com-bined MECT group than in the un-combined MECT group[(37.6%vs.72.0%),P<0.001].MECT was a protec-tive factor against recurrence of MDD[RR(95%CI)=0.52(0.40-0.66)],and the MoCA scores were lower in the combined MECT group than in the un-combined MECT group[(20.9±3.5)vs.(23.6±4.2),β=-1.93,P<0.001].Conclusion:Combined MECT is a protective factor against MDD recurrence. Its effects on the cognitive functioning of MDD patients may have long-term effects.
