Acta Physiologica Sinica 2005;57(3):328-332
To examine the significance of heat shock protein 70 mRNA in ototoxicity resulted from gentamicin (GM), twenty healthy albino guinea pigs (200-250 g) of either sex with a positive Prier reflex were divided into two groups randomly. In GM group the animals received 100 mg/kg GM daily by intraperitoneal injection for 10 d. In saline control group the animals received 2.5 ml/kg saline daily by intraperitoneal injection for 10 d. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds were recorded in each animal before and 1 d after GM or saline administration. After the second ABR measurement, the expression of HSP70 mRNA in guinea pig cochlea was observed with in situ hybridization and image quantitative analysis system. The results showed that the threshold of ABR in the GM group was significantly higher than that of the saline control (P< 0.001). The expression of HSP70 mRNA was more intensive in stria vascularis, spiral ligament and spiral ganglion cells in the GM group than that of the saline control group. These results suggest that administration of gentamicin can induce the expression of HSP 70 mRNA in guinea pig cochlea, and that this effect may protect hearing function from ototoxicity.

OBJECTIVETo summarize clinical outcomes of locking compression plate (LCP) combined with minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis (MIPPO) for the treatment of Pilon fracture.
METHODSFrom January 2009 to December 2012, Pilon fracture patients treated by LCP with MIPPO were retrospectively analyzed. All open fractures, pathologic fractures and those who had limb vascular disease or nerve injury were excluded. Thirty-eight patients were enrolled, including 29 males and 9 females aged from 21 to 78 years old with an average of 48 years old. According to AO classification, 20 cases were type B, 18 cases were type C. Operative time, blood loss, reduction quality, time of fracture healing complications and postoperative ankle joint function were applied for evaluating clinical outcomes, AOFAS scoring were used for assessing postoperative clinical effects.
RESULTSAll patients were followed up from 13 to 24 months (averaged 18 months). All patients obtained bone union without any plate failures or loss of fixation/reduction. One patient occurred superficial wound infection, and resolved with antibiotics and local wound care. Postoperative average AOFAS score was 81 (ranged 65 to 97).
CONCLUSIONLCP with MIPPO for Pilon fratcure has advantages of less invasion, fewer complications and satisfactory ankle function.

AIMTo explore the effects of gentamicin ototoxicity on the expression of heat shock protein 70 in guinea pigs cochlea.
METHODSWe used immunohistochemistry staining and image quantitative analysis system, combined with auditory brainstem response (ABR) measurement to investigate the change on the expression of HSP70 in guinea pigs cochlea of gentamicin ototoxicity.
RESULTSThe levels of HSP70 immunoreactivity in guinea pigs cochlea of experimental animals were high including Corti's organ, stria vascularis, medial spiral limbus, spiral ganglion cells and the threshold of ABR was in high correlation with the expression of HSP70 ([ r] > 0.8, P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONGentamicin can induce expression of HSP 70 in guinea pigs cochlea and protect hearing function.

Objective To explore the relationship between hemolymph phenol oxidase and the melanization of Plasmodium yoelii oocysts in Anopheles dirus. Methods An Anopheles dirus-Plasmodium yoelii system was used Anopheles dirus were divided into 3 groups, that is, non-blood-fedding (N), normal-blood-fedding (B) and infected-blood-fedding (I). The activities of MPO and o-DPO in hemolymph from 3 groups were determined with native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and density scanning at 5, 7, 11 and 15 d after blood feeding. Results Both MPO and o-DPO activity were significantly higher in group I than group N and B (P<0.05). But with the melanization of Plasmodium yoelii oocysts, both MPO and o-DPO activity in group I were decreased in comparison with group N, especially on the 15 th day after infected-blood feeding. MPO and o-DPO activity in group B were significantly stronger than those of group N. Conclusion Blood feeding and infection of Plasmodium yoelii both can activate the cascade. The heamolymph phenol oxidase may play an important role in the melanization of Plasmodium yoelii oocysts in Anopheles dirus.

OBJECTIVESubtrochanteric femoral fractures are severe injuries. Although many treatment methods have been developed, controversy exists regarding the optimal management of these fractures. This study evaluated the clinical outcome of subtrochanteric femoral fractures fixed with long proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA-long).
METHODSBetween October 2006 and February 2008, 25 patients with traumatic subtrochanteric fractures of the femur were treated with PFNA-long. Closed reduction and fixation were performed in 20 cases. In the remaining 5 cases, closed reduction was difficult, so limited open reduction was performed, with bone grafting in 4 cases and circumferential wiring in 4 cases.
RESULTSThe average follow-up time was 16.1 months. All subtrochanteric femoral fractures healed uneventfully except one case of delayed union. The mean union time was 26.2 weeks. Technical difficulties with nail insertion were encountered in 3 cases. No implant failure was observed.
CONCLUSIONPFNA-long is effective in treatment of subtrochanteric femoral fractures, with a high rate of bone union, minor soft tissue damage, early return to functional exercise and few implant-related complications.
