Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), an important component of complementary and alternative medicine, has evolved over thousands of years with its own unique system of theories, diagnostics and therapies. TCM has been increasingly used in the last decades and become well known for its significant role in preventing and treating cancer. We believe that TCM possesses advantages over Western medicine in specific aspects at a certain stage of cancer treatment. Here we summarize the advantages of TCM from three aspects: preventing tumorigenesis; attenuating toxicity and enhancing the treatment effect; and reducing tumor recurrence and metastasis.

Journal of Practical Radiology 2010;26(2):193-195
Objective To evaluate the value of the periportal free air(PPFA) sign at computed tomography(CT) in distinguishing between upper and lower gastrointestinal(GI) tract perforation. Methods CT images of 62 patients with surgically proven GI tract perforation were retrospectively analyzed. 62 cases included upper and lower GI tract perforation in 35 cases and 27 cases,respective-ly. When there was free air in the periportal area,it was defined as positive periportal free air(PPFA) sign. The difference of PPFA sign in upper and lower GI tract perforation, and the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and ac-curacy of PPFA sign in diagnosing gastrointestinal perforation were analysed respectively. Results The PPFA sign was seen in 33 of 35(94%) patients with upper GI tract perforation, but only in 10 of 27 (37%) patients with lower GI tract perforation, there was sig-nificant difference between them(P<0.05). For diagnosis of super GI perforation with PPFA sign, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy were 94% (33/35), 63%(17/27), 770%(33/43), 89%(17/19) and 81% (50/ 62), respectively. Conclusion The PPFA sign is a useful finding in distinguishing between upper and lower GI tract perforation.

Objective To objectively evaluate the effectiveness of reminder system in reducing catheter-associated urinary tract infections. Methods Databases were electronically searched to collect the trials.According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the literatures were screened, the data were extracted and the methodological quality of the included studies was assessed. Then Meta-analysis was performed by using RevMan 5.0 software. Results A total of 10 literatures involving 5 662 participants were included. The results of Meta-analysis showed that the reminder system group was superior to the control group in decreasing the incidence rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infections, shortening the days of indwelling catheter, and there were statistical differences. Conclusions Reminder system can shorten the days of indwelling catheter, decrease catheter-associated urinary tract infections,

Objective To study the effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on emergence agitation in children undergoing cochlear implantation. Methods Sixty patients (age range,1-4 years) scheduled to undergo pediatric cochlear implantation were enrolled and randomized into the TEAS group (group T,n =30) that received continuous TEAS and the control group (group C,n =30) that did not receive TEAS.Anesthesia time, operation time, change in blood flow dynamics during the perioperative period, extubation time, and PACU stay time were recorded. The incidence of emergence agitation and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) was monitored. Results No significant intergroup differences were observed in age, sex, weight, operation time, and PACU stay time (P > 0.05).The MAP and HR in group T were lower than those in group C at different time points such as 30 min after the start of surgery, the end of the surgery, the extubation and 5 min after extubation, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05).The FPS-R,FLACC,and PAED scores in group T were lower than those in group C at different time points within 30 min after exmbation (including the time of extubation),and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05).Extubation time, anesthesia time, and incidence of PONV were lower in group T than in group C,and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05).Conclusion TEAS combined with general anesthesia significantly reduces the incidence of emergence agitation in children undergoing surgery for congenital hearing loss;it also helps control hypotension, reheve dramatic hemodynamic changes during the waking period, and reduce the incidence of PONV.

Objective To investigate factors that influence the subjective well-being of nurses in a secondary hospital in Shenzhen Special Economy Zone (SSEZ). Methods A total of 122 nurses in the hospital were assessed using Fazio' s General Well- Being (GWB) schedule and a self-designed data collecting questionaire. Results The difference of GWB were no significant in following factors: education level, administrative appointment, maritial status, years of residence in the SSEZ, whether the nurse pocesses any real estate properties or does any night shifts. There are significant links between the GWB and the age, department of work, professional title, length of service, employment contract type and whether the nurse has any children. Conclusions The findings suggest that age, department of work, professional title, length of service, employment contract type and whether the nurse has any children are the major influential factors of GWB among the nurses in the secondary hospital in SSEZ.

AIM:To look for a way of produ cing mild therapeutic hypothermia through regulating transient re-ceptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 (TRPV1) pathway by dihydrocapsaicin (DHC).METHODS:Mice were subcutaneously injected with DHC at different doses (2 mg/kg, 3 mg/kg and 4 mg/kg) in order to find the best dose for reaching the target temperature (32~34℃).20%DMSO dissolved in normal saline was used as control group .After a single subcutaneous injection of DHC at an optimal dose was given , awaken CD1 mice were continuously infused with DHC at dose of 1 mg? kg-1? h-1 for providing a more rapid and stable temperature drop and duration of therapeutic mild hypothermia. The adult mice (9~10 weeks) and aged mice (24~27 months) were subcutaneously injected with DHC at the same dose, and the changes of the body temperature were monitored .RESULTS:DHC at 2 mg/kg resulted in a de-crease in the core temperature within the target therapeutic range (32~34 °C).After a bolus dose (2 mg/kg) was deliv-ered at 0 min followed by continuous infusion (1 mg? kg-1? h-1 ) beginning at 30 min, a rapid drop of body temperature to 34 ℃was achieved and the body temperature was maintained within the ranges of 32 to 34℃for the duration of the 6 h continuous infusion .DHC-mediated hypothermia did not lose its effectiveness in the adult and aged models .CONCLU-SION:DHC-induced activation of TRPV1 pathway produces mild therapeutic hypothermia .Besides, this method achieves stronger and longer center hypothermia and is suitable for the animals at different ages .

Chinese Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 2011;33(2):122-125
Objective To probe deficits in visuospatial attention using an attention network test (ANT) in patients with frontoparietal network lesions. Methods The ANT was used to measure the alertness, orienting and executive control abilities of 25 patients with local brain lesions, including 13 with frontal and 12 with parietal damage. Their results were compared with those of health adults. Results During ANT tasks, the patients' responses were significantly slower on each cue and target condition than controls', and showed deficits in their alerting and orienting networks. The efficiency of executive control was impaired in patients with frontal lesions, but increased with parietal lesions. Conclusions These findings suggest that the frontoparietal network is involved in alerting and orienting, but the executive control function may be selectively associated with the frontal lobe. ANT is an efficienttool for studying visual attention and cognition.
