Objective To investigate the effects of sevoflurane pretreatment on renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R)-induced apoptosis in kidney in rats. Methods Thirty pathogen-free male SD rats weighing 220-260 g were randomized into 3 groups (n=10 each):group control (group C);group I/R and group sevoflurane(group S). Renal I/R was induced by clamping the left renal pedicle for 45 min in I/R and S groups. In group S inhalation of 2.2% sevoflurane in O2 was started at 30 min before operation and maintained throughout the experiment.Venous blood samples were taken at 3 h of reperfusion for determination of serum BUN and Cr concentrations. The animals were then sacrificed and the left kidneys were removed for microscopic examination, detection of apoptosis(by TUNEL)and determination of heme oxygenase-1(HO-1) mRNA and protein expression (by RT-PCR and Western blot). Results Renal I/R significantly increased serum BUN and Cr concentrations, apoptotic index(percentage of apoptotic cells) and the severity of necrosis of renal proximal convoluted tubules (0=normal,4=necrosis of whole segment of proximal convoluted tubules).Sevoflurane inhalation attenuated the I/R-induced changes mentioned above.HO-1 mRNA and protein expression was up-regulated by I/R and HO-1 mRNA expression was further up-regulated by sevoflurane inhalation. Conclusion Sevoflurane pretreatment can protect kidney against I/R injury by attenuating cell apoptosis.Up-regulation of HO-1 mRNA expression may be involved in the mechanism.

OBJECTIVETo observe the therapeutic effect of massage with manipulation of supplementing marrow and kneading tendon (SMKT) on spastic cerebral palsy (CP).
METHODSA total of 60 children with CP were randomly assigned to the treatment group and the control group equally. All were treated with rehabilitation training, but massage with SMKT was carried out additionally for those in the treatment group, five times every week and 3 months as a therapeutic course. Clinical efficacy was assessed adopting the gross motor function measurement (GMFM-66) and the revised Ashworth scale (MAS) before and after treatment.
RESULTSAll children showed significant improvements in GMFM-66 after treatment. Compared with baseline, the improvement was statistically significant (P <0.01). Significant difference was also found between the 2 groups in MAS and in GMFM scores after treatment (P <0.05).
CONCLUSIONMassage with SMKT manipulation shows a better effect than rehabilitation training therapy alone in treating spastic CP.

Chinese Journal of Pathology 2012;41(6):366-370
OBJECTIVETo study the expression of miR-223 in diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) with correlation of histoloigcal subtypes and clinical prognosis.
METHODSA total of 45 cases of DLBCL were investigated by immunohistochemistry (EnVision method) for CD20, CD3, CD10, bcl-6 and MUM-1. The cases were classified into germinal center B cell-like (GCB) and non-germinal center B cell-like (non-GCB) subtypes according to Hans' algorithm. Agilent Human miRNA Microarray 16.0 was used to detect the expression of micro-RNAs in paraffin-embedded tissue of 24 cases of DLBCL that had available clinical follow-up. The expression levels of miR-223 were examined by TaqMan real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (real-time RT-PCR). Fourteen cases of reactive lymph node were selected as control.
RESULTSAmong 45 cases of DLBCL, 16 cases (35.6%) were GCB and 29 cases (64.4%) were non-GCB subtypes. The expression levels of miR-223 measured by real-time RT-PCR were 19.8 and 15.8 in GCB and non-GCB subgroups, respectively (P = 0.236). The expression of miR-223 was up-regulated in DLBCL with 17.2 folds of increase over that of the reactive lymph nodes (P = 0.014). The overexpression of miR-223 was significantly correlated with a longer overall survival (P = 0.011). Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis identified the following independent poor prognostic factors: low expression of miR-223 (RR = 5.445, 95%CI, 1.555 - 19.068, P = 0.008), abnormal level of LDH (RR = 3.974, 95%CI, 1.191 - 13.266, P = 0.025) and IPI ≥ 3 (RR = 4.044, 95%CI, 1.233 - 13.264, P = 0.021).
CONCLUSIONSThe expression of miR-223 has no relationship with the immunophenotypes of DLBCL. As a potential prognostic biomarker, overexpression of miR-223 correlates with a longer OS of patients with DLBCL.

OBJECTIVETo explore the effect of Tonifying Shen recipe (TSR) on advanced glycation end products (AGEPs), amyloid-beta peptide (A beta P) in telencephalon and hippocampus of ovariectomized rats.
METHODSFemale SD rats, 9 months old, were randomly divided into 3 groups: the sham operation (Sh) group, the ovariectomized (OV) group and the TSR group. Medication via gastrogavage 4 weeks was given after ovariectomy consecutively for 16 weeks. Competitive ELISA and radioimmunoassay (RIA) was used to detect AGEPs and A beta P level in rats' telencephalon and hippocampus; florescent assay was used to determine the serum and urinary soluble AGE-peptide level; and also the rats' behavioral alteration and hippocampal morphological change were observed.
RESULTSCompared with those in the Sh group, the correct escape rate in the OV group was significantly lower (P < 0.05), content of A beta P in telencephalon and serum soluble AGE-peptide levels significantly higher (P < 0.05), contents of AGEPs in telencephalon and hippocampal tissue showed an increased tendency, but without significance (P > 0.05), argyrophil stain showed that nerve fiber thickened, senile plaques appeared in temporal cortex. In the TSR group after treatment, contents of AGEPs in telencephalon, A beta P in telencephalon and hippocampus significantly decreased (P < 0.05), the urinary soluble AGE-peptide level significantly increased (P < 0.05) and with markedly improvement of learning memory capability and above-mentioned pathological changes.
CONCLUSIONTSR could reduce the accumulation of AGEPs in telencephalon and the contents of A beta P in telencephalon and hippocampal tissue, and improve the impaired ability of learning and memory caused by lack of estrogen. Its mechanism might be based on the elevation in excretion of AGE-peptide via kidney.

OBJECTIVETo study emetic and anti-emetic effects of Rhizoma pinelliae in minks.
METHODThe emetic effect of raw pinellia 2 g kg(-1) (i.g.) was investigated. Three preparations of Rhizoma pinelliae (processed with ginger) were made by ethanol extraction, water extraction and water decoction respectively and their effects on emesis model induced by cisplatin (7.5 mg kg(-1), i.p.) or apomorphine (1.6 mg kg(-1), s.c.) were then studied; the effect of the decoction of ginger-processed Rhizoma pinelliae on rotation-induced emesis model in minks was also observed.
RESULTThe emesis was induced by raw pinellia in minks (P < 0.01); ginger-processed Rhizoma pinelliae, metoclopramide and ondansetron significantly inhibit the emesis induced by cisplatin and apomorphine (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONGinger-processed Rhizoma pinelliae exhibits a anti-emetic effect in minks, which may be mediated by inhibiting the function of the vomiting center in central nervous system.
