Clinical data of 150 patients with mild and 38 patients with severe confirmed influenza A/H1N1 were collected and retrospectively analyzed in this paper with descriptive epidemiology. Mild patients mainly presented with symptoms similar to seasonal influenza with few complications, however, persistent high fever, cough with bloody sputum expectoration, chest distress and short of breath manifested in severe patients with respiratory failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome in some cases. Proportion of obesity and underlying diseases in severe patients, who were at high risk for severe influenza A/H1N1, was higher than that in mild ones (P<0. 05). Average course of the illness spanned five to 11 days in patient with mild influenza A/H1N1 with all cured, and 34 of severe cases discharged with better recovery and other four died with a case-fatality of 10. 5 percent.

Objective To understand the attitude and current situation of medical English stud y as well as its relevant factors among long schooling medical students so as to provide first hand information for constructing students-centered medical English teaching model. Methods A self-de-signed questionnaire including basic information of students, attitude and current situation of medical English students was given to 134 seven or eight year program clinical medical graduates from grade 2006 to grade 2008 in Tongji University. Questionnaires were collected timely and an-alyzed with SPSS 19.0 and results were described by percentage. Results Totally 132 copies of questionnaire were recovered with an recovering rate of 98.51%. 56.82%(75/132) students had interest in medical English study and 71.97%(95/132)students had a will to go abroad for learning exchange. Main pur-poses for students to learn medical English were ‘professional literature reading’(68.94%,91/132),‘SCI papers writing’(59.09%,78/132)and ‘international communication’(58.33%, 77/132). Main influencing factors of medical English study were ‘boring teaching methods ’ ( 45 . 45%, 60/132 ) ,‘difficult medical English’(41.67%,55/132) and ‘insufficient teaching time’(40.91%,54/132).Conclusions Medical students with long schooling have demand for medical English study;however, most of them have some difficulties in practical application. Measures should be taken from three as-pects including students, teachers and curriculum setting to improve students' medical English.

Objective To explore the use of non-invasive technique for early detection of atherosclerosis in health checkups. Methods A total of 46 824 healthy normotensive volunteers, including 24 879 men and 21 945 women, from 27 physical examination centers were reviewed for their clinical data. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) by age was calculated, and related factors of PWV were analyzed. Results Reference range of PWV was increased with age. Detectable rate of abnormal PWV in men < 60 years was significantly higher than women (P<0.05). Detectable rate of PWV of > 1400 cm/s, > 1700 cm/s or > 2000 cm/s were 34. 5% ,7. 5% and 1.9% Respectively. Correlation analysis showed that PWV was closely related with age and mean systolic blood pressure ( P < 0. 05 ). Conclusion Non-invasive technique for early detection of atherosclerosis and PWV should be useful in physical examinations and cardiovascular disease screening.

Objective To investigate the difference of spatial working memory among first-episode patients with deficit and nondeficit schizophrenia. Methods The study recruited 116 first-episode treatment-naive patients with schizo-phrenia, and 60 normal controls. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to assess symptoms of patients and Schedule for the Deficit Syndrome (SDS) was used to divide schizophrenia patients into deficit group (28 patients) and nondeficit group (88 patients). Spatial Working Memory (SWM) test from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automat-ed Battery (CANTAB) was used to test the spatial working memory function. Results Adjusted for age, gender and years of education, there were significant differences in the performance of between errors of 4 boxes (P=0.03), between errors of 6 boxes (P=0.01), between errors of 8 boxes (P=0.03), total errors (P=0.01) and strategy (P<0.01) between deficit and nondef-icit patients, and both groups were poorer than the control group. The SWM of deficit and nondeficit patients has no corre-lation with the negative symptoms (P>0.05). Conclusion The impairment of SWM was more severe in deficit schizophrenia patients than in nondeficit patients at early stage of the disease, suggesting they are different subtypes of schizophrenia.
