Many investigations showed that abnormal blood insulin level is associated with the pathogenesis of Alzheimer′s disease and its clinical manifestation, suggesting that increasing blood insulin level and/or improving insulin sensitivity seem to be helpful for patients with Alzheimer′s disease.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of propofol on brain regions at different sedation levels and the association between changes in brain region activity and loss of consciousness using blood oxygen level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD-fMRI) and bispectral index (BIS) monitoring.
METHODSForty-eight participants were enrolled at Peking Union Medical College Hospital from October 2011 to March 2012 and randomly assigned to a mild or a deep sedation group using computer- generated random numbers. Preliminary tests were performed a week prior to scanning to determine target effect site concentrations based on BIS and concomitant Observer's Assessment of Alertness/Sedation scores while under propofol. Within one week of the preliminary tests where propofol dose-response was established, BOLD-fMRI was conducted to examine brain activation with the subject awake, and with propofol infusion at the sedation level.
RESULTSMild propofol sedation inhibited left inferior parietal lobe activation. Deep sedation inhibited activation of the left insula, left superior temporal gyrus, and right middle temporal gyrus. Compared with mild sedation, deep propofol sedation inhibited activation of the left thalamus, precentral gyrus, anterior cingulate, and right basal nuclei.
CONCLUSIONMild and deep propofol sedation are associated with inhibition of different brain regions, possibly explaining differences in the respective loss of consciousness processes.

Abstract: The loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technique is a technique for the specific and efficient amplification of target fragments at a constant temperature using two pairs of specially designed primers and a strand displacement activity DNA polymerase. LAMP technique is a simple, rapid, specific, sensitive and cost-effective nucleic acid amplification method, and therefore has a promising future in the field rapid detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and grassroots applications. In this review, the basic principles and characteristics of the LAMP technique, the main molecular markers for the diagnosis of tuberculosis, and the use of different molecular markers and various types of novel techniques in the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis, extrapulmonary tuberculosis, and drug-resistant tuberculosis were described. The LAMP technique has been widely used in the diagnosis of tuberculosis with high sensitivity and specificity, but the technique still has some shortcomings. This paper reviews the progress of its application in tuberculosis in recent years and provides an outlook on its development, with a view to providing a rational research direction for rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis in a resource-limited environment.

Objective To assess the red blood cell (RBC) folate status among Chinese elderly population and its geographical differences between Southem and Northern regions, and to evaluate the correlation between RBC and plasma folate. Methods This study was conducted in two counties of Jiangsu and Hebei provinces of China.A total of 810 individuals aged 65-74 years were recruited.RBC folate in blood samples was measured by microbiological assay.Data on RBC folate was log-transformed before analysis.Means of RBC folate concentration were compared by t-test,and the prevalence rates of RBC folate deficiency for different characteristics were compared by x2 test. Results The geometric mean ofRBC folate concentration was 1083.3 nmol/L(95%CI:1034.11134.8) among the Southerners and 489.1 nmol/L (95%CI:466.7-512.6) among the Northerners, with the former being 2.2 times of the latter (t=23.684,P<0.001 ).The prevalence rates of RBC folate deficiency were 1.0% in the South and 28.9% in the North (x2=124.06,P<0.001).The concentrations of RBC folate were positively correlated with plasma folate (r=0.49,P<0.001 ).After adjustment for region, sex, age,BMI,education, exposure to tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption, the correlation remained significant (r=0.38,P<0.001 ).Conclusion In 810 Chinese elderly population aged 65-74 from the two counties,Southerners had a higher RBC folate concentration and a lower deficiency prevalence than those in the Northerners. The RBC folate concentration was positively associated with plasma folate.

China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica 2007;32(6):503-505
OBJECTIVEA HPLC-ELSD method was established for the simultaneous quantitative determination of asiaticoside in Centella asiatica extract.
METHODThe column was packed with 5 m HIQ C18 stationary phase. The mobile phase consisted of acetonitrile-water, eluted in gradient mode. The temperature of drift tube was 105 degrees C and the nebulizer nitrogen flow rate was 2.9 L min(-1).
RESULTThe linear ranges of the asiaticoside were 0.35-7.0 microg. The recovery of the asiaticoside in C. asiatica extract was 94.9% (RSD 1.7%).
CONCLUSIONThe method is reliable, simple, precise and could be used for the quality control of C. asiatica extract.

Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine 2007;27(9):793-795
OBJECTIVETo observe the therapeutic effect of Shenyin Oral Liquid (SOL) in relieving mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and decreasing the Alzheimer's disease (AD) transformation rate.
METHODSOne hundred and seventeen MCI patients were randomly assigned to the Chinese medicine group (42 cases), the vitamin E group (38 cases) and the placebo group (37 cases). The treatment course was 12 months and a 6-month follow-up was conducted after ending the treatment course.
RESULTSAfter treatment, the scores of clock drawing test (CDT), nonsensical figure recognition and mini-mental state examination (MMSE) raised significantly in the Chinese medicine group (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), the activity of acetylcholine esterase in erythrocytic membrane was lower in the Chinese medicine group than that in the placebo group and the Vitamin E group (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Six months after the treatment, there were 2 and 5 cases in the placebo group and the vitamin E group which were diagnosed as AD, respectively, and none in the Chinese medicine group.
CONCLUSIONSOL has an effect similar to cholinesterase inhibitor, it could improve cognitive function in MCI patients and reduce the AD transformation rate in them.
