OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of augmentative locking compression plate combined with bone graft in treating aseptic femoral shaft nonunion after intramedullary nailing.
METHODSTwenty-one cases with aseptic femoral shaft nonunion after intramedullary nailing from January 2007 to January 2013 were treated, including 18 males and 3 females with a mean age of 37.7 years (ranged from 23 to 64 years). The mean period of nonunion after surgery was 23.9 months (ranged from 9 to 62 months). According to Weber-Cech classification,10 of those 21 cases were hypertrophic nonunion,7 were atrophic, and 4 had oligotrophic fracture nonunion. All patients retained the original intramedullary nail, and applied with augmentation plating of 6 to 8 holes locking compression plate, unicortical fixation with 2 to 3 locking screws in the proximal or distal end, with simultaneous autologous iliac bone grafting. After treatment, all patients were allowed to partial weight-bearing until full weight-bearing according to the radiological results. All patients were followed up and were evaluated with clinical and imaging results.
RESULTSAll patients were followed up from 8 to 24 months, averaged (13.5±3.5) months, which showed clinical union at 4 to 8 months, averaged (6.0±1.0) months and radiological solid union at 7 to 12 months, averaged (9.1±1.5) months. No such complications as infection, hardware loosening or breaking were found.
CONCLUSIONAugmentative locking compression plate(LCP) combined with bone graft for aseptic femoral shaft nonunion after intramedullary nail has a satisfied clinical efficacy. It's an useful and simple method.

Objective: To investigate the mRNA expression of chemokine receptors in human villi and trophoblasts of first trimester gestation . Methods: The authors first obtained villous tissues from fifteen women who had undergone selective termination at 5 - 10 weeks of normal gestation. Total RNA was then extracted, using the TRIzol reagent, from villous tissues or Percoll-gradient purified trophoblasts. Consequently, the expressions of chemokine receptors in villous tissues and trophoblasts were investigated by way of semi-quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Results: The chemokine receptors, CXCR4 and CXCR6, were highly expressed in each villous tissue, while the CCR6, CCR7, XCR1 and CX3CR1 were moderately expressed in villi. The chemokine receptors, CCR1- CCR5, CCR8 - CCR10, CXCR1 -CXCR3, were expressed only in some villous samples, while no CXCR5 mRNA was found in any villous tissue. The authors also found that the freshly isolated and Percoll-purified trophoblasts expressed CCR1, CCR3 - CCR5, CCR8 - CCR9, CXCR1 - CXCR4, CXCR6, XCR1 and CX3CR1 mRNA. Conclusion: A variety of chemokine receptors were expressed in villous tissues and trophoblasts of human first trimester gestation, hence, these receptors may play an important biological role at the materno-fetal interface in normal human pregnancy.

8.Relationship between cognitive ability and both thyroid function and mRNA level of thyroid hormone receptor α1 in brain tissue of rats with nonthyroidal illness syndrome
Chinese Journal of Neuromedicine 2010;9(1):34-37,42
Objective To explore the changes of cognitive ability and thyroid function and mRNA level of thyroid hormone receptor α1(TRα1)in the brain tissues of rats with nonthyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS). Methods Nineteen adull male SD rats were randomly divided into normal control (n=9)and NTIS(n=10)groups.The NTIS model, its liver been fiberized was induced by intraperitoneal injecting 0.15 mL carbon tetrachloride([CCL4],[1:6,diluted by com oil])3 times per week with duration of 8 weeks. The normal control group was injected equal sodium.Morris water-maze task was employed to test the cognitive memory ability of the rats;the concentrations of T_3,T_4, FT_3,FT_4,rT_3 and TSH in the blood serum and T_3,T_4 and rT_3 in the brain tissue were detected by using radioimmunoassay(RIA);the mRNA level of TRα1 was detected by fluorescent quantitative RT-PCR. Resuits Morris water-maze task showed no significant difference in congnitive ability between NTIS and control groups (P>0.05).The concentrations of T_4,FT_3,FT_4 and T_3 in blood serum in the NTIS group were significantly lower as compared with those in the normal control group(P<0.05).Concentrations of rT3,TSH in the blood serum, the concentrations of T_4,T_3,rT_3 and the mRNA level of TRα1 in the brain tissue had no significant differences between the two groups(P>0.05). Conclusion The rats with hepatic fibrosis showed typical NTIS.Thyroid function in central nervous system of these rats is normal, so is their cognitive ability. The mRNA level of TRα1 had no significant change in brain tissue of these rats.

OBJECTIVETo investigate therapeutic effects of balance acupuncture on scapulohumeral periarthritis (SP)and the mechanisms.
METHODSThirty male New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into a blank group (group B), a model group (group M) and a balance acupuncture group (group BA) with 10 rabbits in each group. SP model was established by using persistent mechanical strain and ice compress. Balance acupuncture at "Jiantong" point was applied in the animals in group BA, but not in the rabbits of the other two groups. Joint movement and pathological changes in tissues around the affected shoulder joint were observed, and interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in plasma and the affected surrounding tissues, and DNA contents in tendon of supraspinatus muscle were measured.
RESULTSThe content of plasma 5-HT in group BA [(18.16 +/- 4.44) ng/mL] was significantly lower than that in group M [(23.28 +/- 5.89) ng/mL] (P < 0.05), but without obvious difference in IL-1beta content between the two groups (P > 0.05). Compared with group M, the contents of IL-1beta, 5-HT in affected surrounding tissues, and DNA expression in tendon of supraspinatus muscle were significantly lowered to va rious extent in group BA (P < 0.01, P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONBalance acupuncture can effectively improve local and systemic pathological situation induced by SP by way of reducing pain-producing factors, inflammatory factors and DNA expression to alleviate local organization and adhesions in rabbits with experimental SP.
