To compare the measurements of axial length by A-scan ultrasound and IOLMaster. For a total of 138 eyes, axial length was measured with IOLMaster followed by contact A-scan ultrasound.Though a great correlation existed between two measurements, the axial length was a little longer with IOLMaster than with A-scan ultrasound. And the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01).The mean difference of two methods was (-0.198 ± 0.146) mm.With the elongation of axial length, the difference of two methods also increased. For cataract patients with axial length > 28 mm,the control range of crror from IOLMaster for axial length was much lower than that from A-scan.Thus IOLMaster is a simple, fast, reliable and non-contact measurement method of axial length.

In the aromatic amino acid biosynthetic pathway 3-dehydroshikimate (DHS) is a key intermediate. As a potent antioxidant and important feedstock for producing a variety of important industrial chemicals, such as adipate and vanillin, DHS is of great commercial value. Here, in this study, we investigated the effect of the co-expression of aroFFBR (3-deoxy-D-arabino-heptulosonate 7-phosphate synthase mutant with tyrosine feedback-inhibition resistance) and tktA (Transketolase A) at different copy number on the production of DHS. The increased copy number of aroFFBR and tktA would enhance the production of DHS by the fold of 2.93. In order to further improve the production of DHS, we disrupted the key genes in by-product pathways of the parent strain Escherichia coli AB2834. The triple knockout strain of ldhA, ackA-pta and adhE would further increase the production of DHS. The titer of DHS in shake flask reached 1.83 g/L, 5.7-fold higher than that of the parent strain E. coli AB2834. In 5-L fed-batch fermentation, the metabolically engineered strain produced 25.48 g/L DHS after 62 h. Metabolically engineered E. coli has the potential to further improve the production of DHS.

BACKGROUND:Core decompression may provide insufficient support for the subchondral bone in the treatment of early avascular necrosis of the femoral head and increase the risk of fracture and colapse. Quadratus femoris implantation cannot only provide good biological support, but also promote the revascularization at necrotic regions, thus repairing the necrosis of femoral head. OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effects of core decompression with bone paste implantation and core decompression with quadratus femoris implantation on early and middle-stage avascular necrosis of the femoral head. METHODS:Eighty-three patients with early avascular necrosis of the femoral head (92 hips) admitted at the Department of Orthopedics, the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, China, from January 2009 to January 2012 were enroled and divided into groups of core decompression with bone paste implantation (46 cases, 49 hips) and core decompression with quadratus femoris implantation (37 cases, 43 hips) that were respectively injected with bone meal and autogenous bone and osteoinductive materials. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Al involved patients were folowed up. After 1 year of treatment, Harris scores in the two groups were both increased (P < 0.05). But the Harris score of core decompression with bone paste implantation group was lower than that of core decompression with quadratus femoris implantation group (P < 0.05). After 3 years of treatment, X-ray scores in the core decompression with quadratus femoris implantation group were significantly higher than those in the core decompression with bone paste implantation group (P < 0.05). These findings indicate that compared with core decompression with bone paste implantation, core decompression with quadratus femoris implantation is better to prevent femoral head colapse, improve hip function and delay the process of osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

Objective:To determine the inflammatory factor levels and inflammatory cell percentages in the patients with cough variant asthma (CVA ), and to clarify their potential role in the pathogenesis of CVA unresponsive to bronchodilator treatment.Methods:60 patients with CVA were randomly selected and divided into CVA unresponsive to bronchodilator treatment group (n=30)and CVA responsive to bronchodilator treatment group (n=30).As the same time 30 cases of healthy persons were used as normal control group. The levels of interluekin-8 (IL-8)and esoinophil cationic protein (ECP)in their induced sputum were detected, the classification of inflammatory cells in their induced sputum were observed, and their scores of cough symptom were recorded. Results:The IL-8 level in the induced sputum of the patients in CVA unresponsive to bronchodilator treatment group was higher than that in CVA responsive to bronchodilator treatment group and normal control group (P<0.05).The ECP level in the induced sputum of the patients in CVA unresponsive to bronchodilator treatment group was lower than that in CVA responsive to bronchodilator treatment group (P<0.05),but it was similar to the level in normal control group (P>0.05).The neutrophil percentages in the induced sputum of the patients in CVA unresponsive to bronchodilator treatment group were higher than those in CVA responsive to bronchodilator treatment group and normal control group (P<0.05).The scores of cough symptom of the patients in CVA unresponsive to bronchodilator treatment group was positively correlated with IL-8 level (r=0.764,P<0.01), and the scores of cough symptom of the patients in CVA unresponsive to bronchodilator treatment group was positively correlated with the neutrophil percentage in induced sputum (r=0.889,P<0.01).Conclusion:IL-8 and neutrophil may be associated with the incidence of CVA unresponsive to bronchodilator treatment. They can aggravate the inflammation and hypersensitivity of airway and cough symptom. The determination of IL-8 and neutrophil can be used as an accessory method in the diagnosis and j udgement of severity degree and curative effect of CVA in clinic.
