·AIM:To determine the effect of anterior-posterior joint surgery on choroidal thickness in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). · METHODS: A retrospective, case - control study enrolled 60 eyes of 60 patients with PDR diagnosed at Qingdao Municipal Hospital. The patients, who had conditions that warranted anterior - posterior joint surgery, were divided into a clinically significant macular edema group (PDR/CSME+;31 patients,31 eyes) and a non-CSME group (PDR/CSME-;29 patients,29 eyes). Twenty-seven eyes of 27 normal patients were included in the control group. All affected eyes underwent anterior - posterior joint surgery. After surgery, the subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and the nasal choroidal thickness (NCT) and temporal choroidal thickness (TCT), which were obtained at a distance of 1500μ m from the fovea in the nasal and temporal directions, respectively, were measured in the control and PDR groups by enhanced depth imaging spectral domain optical coherence tomography (EDI-SDOCT) at 1wk,1,3, and 6mo after surgery. Changes in choroidal thickness after anterior - posterior joint surgery were compared between the groups. ·RESULTS:The SFCT,NCT,and TCT were significantly thicker at 1mo than at 1wk, 3, and 6mo after surgery in the PDR/CSME+ and PDR/CSME- groups(P<0.05). The SFCT, NCT, and TCT were significantly thinner at 6mo than at 1wk,1,and 3mo after surgery in the PDR/CSME+and PDR/CSME- groups(P<0.05). The SFCT,NCT,and TCT in the PDR/CSME+ and PDR/CSME- groups at 1wk, 1, and 3mo after surgery were significantly thicker than those in the control group (all P<0.05), but the SFCT, NCT, and TCT at 6mo after surgery showed no significant difference compared with the control group (all P>0.05). There was no significant difference in the SFCT,NCT, or TCT at 1wk, 1, 3, or 6mo between the PDR/CSME+ and PDR/CSME- groups (P>0.05). ·CONCLUSION:The choroidal thickness of PDR patients increases within 1mo after surgery, and decreased after 1mo,but is not significantly different between the control group and the PDR groups at 6mo after surgery. Whether PDR is associated with CSME has no effect on the choroidal thickness after surgery.

Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite of the phylum Apicomplexa, can infect all warm-blooded vertebrates, including humans, livestock, and marine mammals. The aim of this study was to investigate whether superoxide dismutase (SOD) of T. gondii can be used as a new marker for genetic study or a potential vaccine candidate. The partial genome region of the SOD gene was amplified and sequenced from 10 different T. gondii isolates from different parts of the world, and all the sequences were examined by PCR-RFLP, sequence analysis, and phylogenetic reconstruction. The results showed that partial SOD gene sequences ranged from 1,702 bp to 1,712 bp and A + T contents varied from 50.1% to 51.1% among all examined isolates. Sequence alignment analysis identified total 43 variable nucleotide positions, and these results showed that 97.5% sequence similarity of SOD gene among all examined isolates. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that these SOD sequences were not an effective molecular marker for differential identification of T. gondii strains. The research demonstrated existence of low sequence variation in the SOD gene among T. gondii strains of different genotypes from different hosts and geographical regions.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the clinical effect of atlantoaxial pedicle screw internal fixation for treatment of atlantoaxial dislocation.
METHODSSixteen patients with atlantoaxial dislocation were treated from Dec. 2005 to June 2007, included 10 males and 6 females, aged from 38 to 45 years old (means 40.5 years). Among them 12 patients combined with nerve injury, according to ASIA grade: there were 3 cases in grade B, 5 cases in grade C, 4 cases in grade D. All patients received preoperative CT, radiograph and skull traction. Intraoperative posterior approach general spine pedicle screw-rod orthopaedics fixation system used and iliac bone block were implanted in space of posterior atlantal arch and axial vertebral plate. The outcome and complications were observed in the near future.
RESULTSThere was no vascular or neural injury found. The patients were followed up for 12 to 24 months (means 18 months). All head pain, acid storm symptoms were improved after operation. According to the Odom's clinical efficacy evaluation standard, 12 cases were excellent, 4 were good. Eleven cases of 12 with nerve injury recovered significantly. By ASIA classification: 1 cases was in grade B, 2 cases were in grade C, 5 cases were in grade D, 4 cases were in grade E. No looseness or breakage of screw occurred. Bony fusion was achieved in all cases.
CONCLUSIONPosterior approach atlantoaxial pedicle screw internal fixation have the advantages of direct screw placement, short-segment fusion, intraoperative reduction, fixation reliable, high fusion rate, and it can restablish the upper cervical vertebrae stability and help to recover the spinal cord and nerve function.

Journal of Experimental Hematology 2004;12(2):194-198
Snake venom proteins, particularly from the viper and elapid families, have been known to contain a number of platelet active components including what cause platelet aggregation or inhibit platelet aggregation. Some of them have potential clinical usefulness for the treatment of human hemorrhagic or thrombotic disease. Agkistrodon halys pallas belonging to viper family is only growing in China. The aim of this study was to purify a human platelet aggregation inhibitor from venom of Agkistrodon halys pallas and determine its biochemical character. Whether a component could inhibit human platelet aggregation was act as a method to follow the tracks of the protein. Crude venom of Agkistrodon halys pallas was loaded onto a DEAE-Sepharose CL-6B chromatography column could gain 6 peaks. A platelet inhibitor with molecular mass of 65 kD on SDS-PAGE, was purified from peak 2 by Sephadex G-75 gel filtration and SP-Sepharose, Mono Q on FPLC. It could inhibit human platelet aggregation induced by ADP, collagen without activities of phospholipase A2, esterase, fibrinogenolytic. It is concluded that a platelet inhibitor can be isolated and purified from venom of Agkistrodon halys pallas and its inhibition of platelet aggregation is does-dependent.
