Objective] To study Professor Wang Xinghua's experience in the treatment of cough. [Methods] Typical cases of cough treated by Wang Xinghua are selected for the analysis of causes, pathogenesis, treatment methods and detailed prescription. [Results] Six exogenous climatic evils, internal injury caused by excess of seven emotions, improper diet and overwork all can damage lung Qi, inducing cough. Delayed or improper treatment can lead to sub-acute types of cough, while weak constitution and deficiency of vital Qi consumed by prolonged diseases result in chronic cough. External induced acute cough mainly is excess type, while internal damage induced chronic cough is more prone to have deficient type. Syndrome differentiation based on external and internal factors, cold and heat, deficiency and excess is recommended for the treatment of cough. Those frequently used methods include dissipating wind-cold, expelling wind-heat, clearing away phlegm-heat, reinforcing earth to generate metal, removing dampness to reduce phlegm, warming Yang for resolving fluid retention, nourishing Yin to moisten dryness. Exogenic cough should be treated with expelling pathogens, assisted with tonifying vital Qi. Chronic cough resulting from disordered visceral function should be treated with tonification and conditioning, combined with expelling pathogen. [Conclusion] Professor Wang Xinghua's experience for treating cough is worth spreading for the comprehensive understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease, accurate syndrome differentiation, unique medicine application and significant treating effect.

Journal of Geriatric Cardiology 2004;1(2):125-128
Objective To evaluate the sensitivity of arterial ketone body ratio as an indicator for multiple organ failure.Materials and methods The experimental model of multiple organ failure was made in adult and old rats by hypoperfusion-induced hemorrhagic shock. After blood sampling, the arterial acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate, total ketone body, ALT, AST, BUN, creatinine at 2, 4, 8 hr in hypoperfusion were examined to compare the differences of ketone body ratio and organ failure between adult and old rats. Hepatic and mitochondrial metabolism were assessed by comparing ketone body ratios (AcAc/β-OHB) and free NAD+/NADH ratios. Results Ketone body ratio in old rats at 2, 4, 8 hr after the induction of hemorrhagic shock decreased from 0.68 to 0.31, 0.27 and 0.22, respectively. In adult rats, it decreased from 1.12 to 0.17, 0.12 and 0.09, respectively. Changes of ketone body ratio in the adult group were larger than in the elderly group ( P < 0.001). The development of multiple organ failure is associated with the time of hemorrhagic shock development. Conclusions There was a different ketone body ratio between multiple organ failure in the elderly (MOFE) and multiple organ failure (MOF) in general adults. Ketone body ratio is a better indicator than ALT and AST in reflecting hepatic function in the early status of MOF. (J Geriatr Cardiol 2004;1(2) :125-128. )

Objective To systematically assess the clinical efficacy and safety of acupuncture treatment for vertigo with excess syndrome. Methods Chinese and English literature about acupuncture treatment of vertigo with excess syndrome published in recent years was comprehensively searched. The quality of the retrieved literature meeting the inclusion criteria of randomized controlled trial was assessed and its data was collected. A Meta analysis of the included studies was carried out. Results Finally, 10 articles with randomized controlled trials containing a total of 688 patients were included in the analysis. The included literature was assessed at lower quality using Cochrane evaluation member manual 5.1. A Meta analysis showed that the efficacy rate of acupuncture treatment for vertigo with excess syndrome was higher than that of Western drugs alone [M-H OR 4.84, 95%CI (2.39, 9.81),P<0.0001]. Combined acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine was superior to Chinese herbal medicine alone [M-H OR 3.82, 95%CI (2.06, 7.10),P<0.0001]. Vertigo symptom and function scoring showed day 3 of treatment [MD 4.66, 95%CI (2.97, 6.35)], day 7 of treatment [MD 0.95, 95%CI (0.03, 1.86)] and day 14 of treatment [MD 0.89, 95%CI (0.71, 2.49)]. There were statistically significant differences in the vertigo symptom and function scores between the two groups of patients at day 3 and 7 of treatment. There were no statistically significant differences in the scores between the two groups of patients at day 14 of treatment. Conclusions Acupuncture or combined acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are effective and highly safe in treating vertigo with excess syndrome, but high-quality, multi-center and large-sample RCT studies still need to be conducted for validation and support.

Chinese Journal of Experimental Ophthalmology 2012;(11):982-986
Background Diabetes is one of the risk factors that leads to corneal neuropathy.Silent signal regulatory factor 1 (Sirt1) plays an important role in glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, regulation of insulin secretion and is closely related to the nervous system disease. The relationship between Sirt1 and diabetic corneal neuropathy is not fully understood. Objective This study was to detect the expression of Sirtl in cornea and trigeminal ganglion with type 1 diabetes model mice and explore the association of Sirt1 expression with diabetic corneal neuropathy. Methods Eight C57BL/6-Ins2Akita/J male mice and eight wild-type C57BL/6 male mice in the same litter were selected as type 1 diabetes model group and control group, respectively. The mice of two groups were sacrificed in overdose anesthesia method at 12-month old.Histological examination of cornea and trigeminal ganglion was performed using hematoxylin and eosin staining.Expression and localization of Sift1 protein in cornea and trigeminal ganglion were detected using immunohistochemistry.Western blot assay and fluorescine quantitative PCR were respectively used to quantitatively analyze the expression of Sirt1 protein and Sirt1 mRNA.Results Trigeminal ganglion cells were uneven in size and shape with the loosened cellular arrangement and disorder neurofibrosis alignment, and the corneal epithelial cells were less in the C57BL/6-Ins2Akita/J mice, but the trigeminal ganglion cells and corneal epithelial cells were normal in wild-type C57BL/6 mice.Immunochemisty exhibited that Sirtl protein was expressed mainly in corneal epithelium and the expression of Sirtl protein was stronger in the C57BL/6 mice than that in C57BL/6-Ins2Akita/J mice.Fluorescine quantitative PCR assay showed that the gray scale value of Sirt1 mRNA in cornea in C57BL/6-Ins2Akita/J mice was lower than that of the wild-type C57BL/6 mice(0.56±0.03 vs.0.98±0.13) with significant difference (t =5.853,P =0.010).Western blot showed that the expression of Sirt1 protein in cornea was lower in C57BL/6-Ins2Akita/J mice than that of the wild-type C57BL/6 mice(0.78±0.017 vs.1.300±0.012) with significant difference(t =33.140,P =0.001).However,no significant differences were seen in the gray scale value of Sirt1 mRNA(2.45±0.18 vs.2.51±0.22) (t=0.587,P=0.599) and protein level(1.100±0.015 vs.1.110±0.017) (t =0.430,P=0.709) in trigeminal ganglion tissues between C57BL/6-Ins2Akita/J mice and wide-type C57BL/6 mice. Conclusions The corneal nerve and structure is abnormal in 12-month-old C57BL/6-Ins2Akita/J mouse.Sirt1 is involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic keratoneuropathy, suggesting that it may be a potential target.
