Journal of Environment and Health 1992;0(05):-
Three widely used methods of sediment toxicity evaluation were introduced in the present paper, including organism toxicity tests, toxicity identification evaluation(TIE) and sediment quality guidelines(SQGs). Compared with the chemical analysis, toxicity tests have an advantage of taking the bioavailability of POPs into account, however, it fails to identify the causative toxicants. TIE, integrating with physicochemical analysis, implicates the specific pollutants in a tiered approach, and by which effective remediation can be designed accordingly. The sediment toxicity can be identified more quickly and appropriately by SQGs than by the former two methods. The differences among the different SQGs constituted by different standards may affect their values for toxicity evaluation. Extensive and reliable SQGs had been acquired to improve their utility. Finally, the combination of chemical analysis, toxicity tests and in situ bioassays will be the trend of sediment toxicity evaluation in the future.

Objective To investigate the clinical outcome of post-traumatic tibial osteomyelitis treated by induced membrane technique combined with the antibiotic cement-coated locking plate. Methods A restrospective case series analysis was made on 71 cases of post-traumatic tibial osteomyelitis treated by induced membrane technique from September 2014 to September 2014.There were 55 males and 16 females, aged 18-60 years(mean, 37.4 years).Mean length of bone defect following debridement was 4.5 cm(range, 4-11 cm).Antibiotic cement-coated locking plates were used to provide the stability of the bone defects after one-stage debridement.Bone grafting and exchanging the plates with ntramedullary nails were done during the second-stage surgery.Parameters were monitored dynamically after operation to evaluate infection recurrence and bone healing, including C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), clinical features(sinus formation, redness and swelling, warmth and pain) and X-ray films of the involved limbs. Results All patients were followed up for 13-25 months (mean, 19.5 months). There was no sign of recurring infection and CRP and ESR were normal in all cases after the first stage surgery. However, four cases (6%) had recurrent infection with sinus exudates and their CRP and ESR were abnormal after the second stage surgery, and further treatments were carried out on these patients.Follow-up showed bony union in all patients within mean 5.5 months (range, 4-6 months). Conclusion Induced membrane technique with antibiotic cement-coated locking plates for treatment of post-traumatic tibial osteomyelitis can shorten bone healing time and decrease infection recurrent rate without obvious impact on osteogenic activity.

BACKGROUND:So far, engineered myocardium is stil facing many problems. Research has demonstrated that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells can be differentiated into myocardial cells. Polyglycolide and polycaprolactone are commonly used artificial polymers, which have good biocompatibility.
OBJECTIVE:To observe the growth of the poly(glycolic acid)/poly(e-caprolactone) copolymer patch in vitro in normal myocardium and infarcted myocardium.
METHODS:Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in Sprague-Dawley rats were separated using adherent separation and selection method, cultured in vitro. The third passage was labeled with DAPI. The bone marrow mesenchymal stem cellsuspensions (2×106/cm2) were produced and planted on poly(glycolic acid)/poly(e-caprolactone) copolymer scaffolds to form poly(glycolic acid)/poly(e-caprolactone) copolymer patch. After culturing for 48 hours, the specimens were observed under electron microscope, stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and then observed under light microscope. Rat models of myocardial infarction were established by ligating left anterior descending coronary artery. Poly(glycolic acid)/poly(e-caprolactone) copolymer patch was implanted into the normal and infarcted myocardium for 5 weeks. The survival of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells was determined by the detection of pathology.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Results of light microscope and electron microscope demonstrated that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells grew three-dimensional y on poly(glycolic acid)/poly(e-caprolactone) copolymer patch. cells and patch were adhesive wel . Under laser confocal microscopy, compared with the first week, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were marked by DAPI in the myocardium at the fifth week. There were bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells marked by DAPI in the infracted area. Results of hematoxylin-eosin staining exhibited that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were detected in the infarct area. These results suggested that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells adhered to the poly(glycolic acid)/poly(e-caprolactone) copolymer stent wel . The complexes of poly(glycolic acid)/poly(e-caprolactone) copolymer and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells can be used for reparation of myocardium.

Objective To compare the characteristics of hMPV infection in BALB/c and SCID mice. Methods BALB/c and SCID mice were infected intranasally with GFP-rhMPV,and sacrificed on day 3,5,7,9 and 14 post inoculation.Heart, liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys and brain of the animals were used for viral isolation, titration, pulmonary histopathology and detection of GFP-hMPV mRNA expression by RT-PCR and real-time PCR.Results Live viruses were successfully isolated from the lungs of infected mice.Viral titers peaked on the 5th day post inoculation.Viruses remained to be detectable on the 14th day post inoculation in SCID mice, but not in BALB/c mice, whereas genomic RNA of GFP-rhMPV was detectable by PCR targeting F gene in infected BALB/c mice.Live viruses were not able to be isolated from heart, liver, spleen, kidney and brain, neither was genomic RNA of hMPV able to be detected on the 5 th day post inoculation by RT-PCR and real-time PCR.Histopathology of lungs was characterized by interstitial pneumonia on 5 days post inoculation.Lung pathology score of BALB/c mice group was slightly lower than SCID,and the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion GFP-rhMPV can only replicate in the immunocompetent and immunodeficient mouse lungs, but not in other organs. As compared to that in BALB/c mice, the viral replication appears to be more efficiently and for longer time in SCID mouse lungs probably due to the absence of host cellular and humaral immunity, but this does not necessarily result in more severe pathological lesion.
