Objective To analyze the related factors of local recurrence in patients with rectal cancer after Dixon operation. Methods A retrospective analysis of clinical data of 100 patients from September 2005 to September 2007 in our hospital by TME standard surgicai treatment of low rectal cancer was carried out. Results Of 100 patients, the pre-sacral recurrence rate was 10. 0%, with gender, age, tumor size, tunor invasion lumen circumference, depth of invasion, lymph node metastasis and Duke's stage has nothing to do with the gross type, histological type and lumen, peritoneal tumor cell shedding, and as an independent prognostic factor. Of 90 patients without local recurrence, the 5-year survival rate was 76. 0% ,haff of the survival of 62 months;10 cases of local recurrence,5-year survival rate was 5. 0%, half of the survival of 24 months, suggested that local recurrence in patients influenced the prognosis. Conclusion The low local recurrence of rectal cancer related factors were gross type, histological type and the intestine, peritoneal tumor cells shed, seriously affect the prognosis of patients with local recurrence.

As human beings ascend to high altitude, a number of reactions may occur against hypoxic injuries. These hypoxic responses are related to intake, transportation and utility of the oxygen. As a crucial subcellular organelle of oxygen utility, mitochondrion is a central link of high altitude acclimatization, adaptation and mountain sicknesses. In this review, we discussed the recent advances in researches on hypoxic mitochondrial responses at high altitude.

This article was aimed to explore the method of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) health maintenance knowledge base building. TCM health maintenance knowledge classification method was studied under the guidance of TCM health maintenance classification system to construct a special literature database to store TCM health maintenance knowledge. Based on TCM literature resources, TCM health maintenance knowledge service platform was designed and developed for the static display and dynamic query support of TCM health maintenance knowledge. The content of knowledge base will be accessed to the whole society. The results showed that the construction method can be a system arrangement and modern interpretation of TCM health maintenance knowledge, in order to support TCM health maintenance knowledge base and its update and service system. It was concluded that under the guidance of TCM theories, the construction of TCM health maintenance knowledge base will realize the health maintenance knowledge-sharing and service requirement of TCM.

Objective To investigate and compare the clinical values of serum procalcitonin (PCT)and high sensitivity C-reac-tive protein (hs-CRP)levels for predicting the blood culture positivity in the patients with sepsis. Methods 132 adult patients with sepsis were enrolled in this study.Blood cultures were performed before the antibacterial therapy. The white blood cell (WBC) count, absolute neutrophil count(ANC),levels of PCT and hs-CRP were determined. The application value of PCT and hs-CRP for predicting the positive blood culture results were evaluated. Results The median serum PCT levels in the blood culture positive group and the blood culture negative group were 7.92 ng/mL and 0.95 ng/mL respectively, the difference had statistical signifi-cance(P <0.01).The receiver operating characteristic (ROC)curves showed that PCT had a higher predictive accuracy for blood culture positivity compared with hs-CRP,the area under the curve (AUC)was 0.810(P =0.001)and 0.690(P =0.274),respec-tively.The combined detection of PCT and hs-CRP for predicting the blood culture positive results was similar to the performance of PCT alone,AUC as 0.885 (P =0.001 ).The median cut point of PCT was 0.91 ng/mL,the sensitivity of PCT for predicting blood culture positivity was 90%.This sensitivity remained unchanged when PCT cut point was1.14ng/mL.Using the PCT cut points of 0.91 and 1.14 enabled reducing the submitted blood cultures by 51% and 56% respectively. Conclusion Compared with hs-CRP,serum PCT level could better predict the blood culture positivity in the patients with sepsis.

Biomedical and Environmental Sciences 2005;18(5):349-355
The effects of airborne particulate matter (PM) trace elements on health are widely concerned nowadays. Many achievements have been made while many unknowns exist. This article reports the recent research progresses, describes the effects of exposure to PM trace elements on health epidemiological evidence, toxicology findings, and raises some questions for future studies.

Codon bias is an important factor which influences heterologous gene expression. Optimizing codon sequence could improve expression level of heterologous gene. In order to improve the expression level of BmK AngM1 gene encoding the analgesic peptide from Buthus martensii Karsch in Pichia pastoris, the codon-optimized BmK AngM1 gene according to its cDNA sequence and the preference codon usage of P. pastoris were cloned into expression vector pPIC9K and then transformed into P. pastoris. The expersion of recombinant BmK AngM1 (rBmK AngM1) was inducced by methanol in the medium, and the expression level of the optimized BmK AngM1 gene was 3.7 times of the native one. These results suggested that the expression of BmK AngM1 in P. pastoris could be successfully improved by codon optimization.

Objective To study the effect of oxymatrine (OMT) combined with radiotherapy on the growth of HO8910 cells of human ovarian cancer in vitro. Methods All human ovarian cancer samples were divided into four groups:control group, treated with culture solution; OMT group, treated with 4 mg/ml OMT; radiotherapy group, treated by 4 Gy radiotherapy; and combination group, firstly treated by 4Gy radiotherapy, and then cultured with 4 mg/ml OMT.Observed the changes of cell morphology by invert microscope at 10,24,48,and 72 hours respectively.Flow cytometry was adopted to detect cell apoptosis. Results ① invert microscope observation showed that compared with the control group,HO8910 cells demonstrated apoptosis of diminution in volume, thickening in cytoplasm, and gathering in nucleus in all the other three groups at 24 and 48 hours.② Flow cytometry showed that apoptosis rate of HO8910 cells and cell population in G1 phase increased in the combination group, which were significantly higher than the other three groups (P<0.05).Conclusion Both OMT (4 mg/ml)and radiation (4Gy)can induce cell apoptosis, while the combination of them showed better therapeutic results.
