Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) for rectal carcinoid tumors. Methods From January 2006 to January 2009, EMR was performed in 28 patients with rectal carcinoids, who were followed up to evaluate the therapeutic effect and safety. Results Tumor diameters varied from 0.4 cm to 1. 2 cm (mean 0.7± 0. 2 cm). Negative resection margin was a-chieved in 26 cases (92. 9% ), tumor margin within 0. 1 cm of resection margin in 1 (7. 1% ) , and two margins coincided in 1 patient (7. 1% ). Hemostasis was performed with metal clips in 14 patients (50% ) and argon plasma coagulation (APC) in 9 (32. 1% ). Except for rectal bleeding in 1 patient (3. 6% ) , no other complications were observed. There was no recurrence in any patients during a follow-up of 6-36 months. Conclusion EMR is a useful and safe method for treatment of small rectal carcinoid tumor which does not cross submucosal layer.

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of fluoroscopy guided frequency-doubled double-pulsed laser lithotripsy for removing difficult bile duct stones. Methods From March 2008 to December 2009, patients with difficult bile duct stones were divided into cholangioscopy guided group ( n = 21 )and fluoroscopy guided group ( n = 19) to receive corresponding treatments. The success rate of complete stone removal and the complication rate related to the procedure were compared between the two groups.Results There are no significant differences between 2 groups in regarding of either success rate of complete stone removal ( 19/21, 90. 5% in cholangioscopy guided group vs. 17/19, 89. 5% in fluoroscopy guided group, P ＞0. 05 ) or rate of procedure related complication (4/21, 19. 0% in cholangioscopy guided group vs. 3/19, 15. 8% in fluoroscopic guided group, P = 0. 559 ). Conclusion Frequency-doubled doublepulsed laser lithotripsy guided by cholangioscopy or fluoroscopy are both safe and effective.

In this paper, vegetative( vip83 ) and crystal(cry1Ac10 and cry1Ca) insecticidal protein genes from Bacillus thuri ngiensis were simultaneously electrospored into the plasmid-free strain BMB17 1. By the means of the specific P CR detection, the recombinant strains BMB2830-171 contained cry 1Ac10 and vip83, and BMB2 882-171 had cry1Ca and vip83 , were obtained respectively. Under the control of r ecombinant strains with one gene, bioassay of the synergism between vegetative V ip83 and crystal Cry1Ac10( or Cry1Ca )insecticidal proteins to three important Lepidopteran pests were done. The results, by analysis of statistic bio-so ft, showed that the synergia relation of vegetative Vip83 and crystal Cry1Ac10 i nsecticidal protein toxic to Heliothis armigera wascounteracted, while Plu tella xylostella and Spodotera exigua unobservable. There was no synergis tic action between Vip83 and Cry1Ca insecticidal proteins with Spodotera exigu a as tested insect. Bu t their cooperation to Heliothis armigera was minus, and the counterpart to Plutella xylostella plus, whose cotoxicity factor is 32.6. The experiment of bi-g ene genetic stability also suggested that the synergia effection had certain molecu lar genetic stability in the same cell. This performance can be contributed to construct high-effect and wide-spectrum engineered strain.

A 2,4 -dichlorophenol degrading Pseudomonas strain GI241-1 was isolated from a soil sample. The dienelactone hydrolase gene, designated as dcpD which encodes dienelactone hydrolase involved in transforming cis-2-chloro-dienelactone into 2-chloromaleylacetic acid, was cloned from this bacterium strain. The gene cloning strategy was to construct genomic library after location of its neighbouring gene by Southem blot and to screen the aim transformant by dot blotting. Sequencing results showed that length of dcpD is 702bp. The sequence of dcpD and the deduced amino acid are different from the relative sequences registered in the GenBank.

Objectiye To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and safety of (endoscopic sphincterotomy, EST) plus balloon dilation for difficult bile duct stones. Methods Patients with difficult common bile duct stones on endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) from March 2008 to December 2009 were randomly divided into 2 groups to receive EST or EST plus balloon dilation ( EST + EPBD), respectively. The success rate of complete stone removal, number of endoscopic sessions, the rate of using mechanical lithotripsy and the complication rate related to the procedure were compared between the 2 groups. Results Compared with EST alone, EST plus balloon dilation resulted in similar outcomes in terms of overall successful stone removal rate (2/62 vs. 2/61 ) and early complication rate (4/62 vs. 6/61, P ＞0. 05). However,EST group needed more sessions ( EST 15/46 vs. EST + EPBD 5/57, P ＜0. 05) and use of mechanical lithotripsy to achieve complete removal of stones ( EST 12/61 vs. EST + EPBD 4/61, P ＜0. 05 ). Conclusion EST plus balloon dilation is as safe and effective as, but more convenient than EST, for endoscopic removal of common bile duct stones.

To prove the influence of protein isoaspartyl-methyltransferase ( PIMT ) on the cell apoptosis of fibroblast-like synoviocytes of RA.Methods: The expression vector of PIMT was constructed and transfected in to the RA-FLS, the impact of PIMT on the cell apoptosis of RA-FLS was observed by overexpressing the vector of PIMT.Results:The mRNA and protein level of PIMT in RA-FLS was increased after transfected the vector of PIMT into RA-FLS;compared with the normal cultured RA-FLS and the RA-FLS transfected with the empty vectors ,the cell apoptosis level was also increased.Conclusion:The decreased expression level of PIMT in RA-FLS is an important reason for reduce apoptosis of RA-FLS,and PIMT can affect the imbalance of proliferation/ap-optosis in the RA-FLS.

BACKGROUND:Bismth-doped iron nanoparticles modified by hyaluronic acid (HA-BiIOPs) not only act as an effective MRI contrast agent, but also as a radiotherapy sensitizer.OBJECTIVE:To fabricate the HA-BiIOPs and to observe its effect to enhance the radiosensitivity of glioblastoma cells U87MG under X-ray radiation.METHODS:HA-BiIOPs were synthesized using hydrothermal polyol method. (1) Cytotoxicity: A cytotoxicity test was carried out on U87MG cells and rat vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Cell proliferation rate of two kinds of cells cultured with different concentrations of HA-BiIOPs (0, 12.5, 25, 50, 100, 200, 400 mg/L) at 24 hours after culture were determined by cell counting kit-8 assay. (2) Histological analysis: ICR mice were sacrificed after intravenous injection of HA-BiIOPs, and pathological changes of mouse visceral organs were observed under an optical microscope. (3) Cellular uptake: The HA-BiIOPs after entered into the cytoplasm were observed by Prussian blue staining. (4) Radiosensitization test: U87MG cells at Logarithmic growth stage were cultured in culture medium as control group, subjected to X-ray irradiation (0, 3, 6, 9 Gy) as radiotherapy group, cultured in HA-BiIOPs (0, 12.5, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg/L) as HA-BiIOPs group or subjected to HA-BiIOPs culture plus X-ray irradiation as combined therapy group. Then, the cell proliferation rate and cloning efficiency were measured at 24 hours after treatment.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1) The HA-BiIOPs at different concentrations were non-cytotoxic for VSMC and U87MG cells. (2) After intravenous injection of HA-BiIOPs, there was no obvious toxicity to the mouse susceptible organs. (3) After 6 hours of culture, the HA-BiIOPs could be internalized by U87MG cells. (4) The proliferation rate of U87 cells was negatively correlated with the concentration of HA-BiIOPs (0-200 mg/L) and X-ray dose (0-9 Gy). Especialy, the combination of 6 Gy X-ray irradiation with 200 mg/L HA-BiIOPs dramatically decreased the cell viability that was decreased to (41±7)%. In the combined therapy group with 6 Gy X-ray and 100 mg/L HA-BiIOPs, the cells proliferation rate was significantly lower than that in the control and radiotherapy groups (P < 0.05). These results indicate that HA-BiIOPs have a radiosensitizative effect on glioblastoma cells U87MG.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effects of microwave radiation on thymocytes in mice at different power densities.

METHODSThe experimental animals were whole-body exposed to microwave radiation with frequency of 2,450 MHz, power density of 1, 5, 15 mW/cm(2) respectively 1 h everyday for 30 days. Then the thymus were taken out after the mice were decapitated. Thymus index, morphological characteristics of thymus were examined. The changes of thymus T-cell subgroups, cell cycle progression in thymocytes and cellular apoptosis were detected with flow cytometry (FCM).

RESULTSThe body weights of animals in 5, 15 mW/cm(2) irradiation groups [(28.10 +/- 1.46), (27.50 +/- 2.52) g] were lower than that of the control [(31.95 +/- 2.51) g] (P < 0.05). Pathological observation showed dark red piece of nucleus, some nuclei inclined to one side, slight increase in hassall body. The expressions of CD8 in 5, 15 mW/cm(2) irradiation groups (29.14% +/- 1.68%, 29.18% +/- 0.81%) were higher than that in control group (26.95% +/- 1.27%) (P < 0.05). The percentages of G(2) + M phase thymocytes in both radiation groups (12.24% +/- 1.82%, 11.19% +/- 1.36%) were lower than that in control group (14.58% +/- 0.64%) (P < 0.01). Thymocytic apoptosis rates in the three experimental groups (7.18% +/- 0.99%, 10.06% +/- 1.58%, 9.45% +/- 0.92%) were higher than that in control (4.25% +/- 1.63%) (P < 0.01), but the evident difference between 5 mW/cm(2) and 15 mW/cm(2) was not found (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONSub-chronic microwave exposure (2 450 MHz, 5, 15 mW/cm(2)) could induce thymocyte apoptosis, cause pathological changes in thymus, and affect cell cycle progression, thus may inhibit the immune function of the animal.
