Objective Mutated inbred animal model is introduced to the practical course of genetic diagnosis in the hope that medical students are able to apply what they have learned to clinical cases, based on a deep understanding of principle and technology on gene mutation detection. Methods We integrated DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction, agarose gel electrophoresis, and gel imaging analysis into a comprehensive experiment and arranged 4-year-programme undergraduates majoring in preclinical medical sciences to conduct it with the purpose of investigating the internal relations between phenotype and genotype in a hairless Uncv mouse model. Subsequently, the questionnaire aimed at evaluating learning effect on the part of students was handed out and their feedbacks were analyzed. Results More than 90% of respondents are satisfied with the general learning effect. Especially, 98. 7% of students support the enhancing effect of the new teaching mode on their research skills and 96% consider the practical course helpful to their problem-solving ability. Conclusions The introduction of mutated inbred animal model to the practical system of molecular diagnostics proves beneficial to boost students' learning effect and scientific research quality. Our practice also provokes thoughts on the further utilization of animal models in teaching system of medical sciences.

Multilateral mechanisms are important platforms and vehicles for cooperation in traditional medicine.Relying on multilateral platforms,China is able to enhance the international influence of the domestic traditional Chinese medicine and form synergies with other member countries to enhance regional or cross-regional radiation effects in order to promote sustainable development of traditional medicine around the world.This paper focuses on China's participation in major multilateral health cooperation mechanisms,including global initiatives(WHO-led global cooperation framework,the Belt and Road Initiative),regional multilateral mechanisms(ASEAN countries,China-Japan-Korea Health Cooperation Mechanism,Shanghai Cooperation Organization(SCO),The Greater Mekong Subregion(GMS)),and cross-regional multilateral mechanisms(BRICS,Forum On China-Africa Cooperation(FOCAC),G20),and sorts out the cooperation policies and actions in traditional medicine under different mechanisms,to analyze the characteristics and challenges of the existing mechanisms in traditional medicine cooperation,and to provide evidence for China's promotion on multilateral cooperation in traditional medicine.

Objective To monitor the co-infection status of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (R.b.s.1) and spotted fever group Rickettsia (SFGR) in tourist areas of Heilongjiang province.Methods Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect the 5S-23S rRNA intergenic spacer of B.b.s.1 and ompA of SFGR in ticks,dynamically collected from tourist areas of Heilongjiang province in 2010.Amplification products from positive ticks were sequenced,and phylogenetic analysis was conducted by Mega 5.0 software package.Results 849 ticks were collected from two tourist points,with the dominant ticks in Tiger Mountain and Jingpo Lake were Ixodes persulcatus and Haemaphysalis concinna.Regarding the Ixodes persulcatus from Tiger Mountain,the infection rates of B.b.s.1 and SFGR were 26.15％ and 10.05％.The infection rate of SFGR was 13.33％ in Haemaphysalis concinna and the B.b.s.1 was tndiscovered in the same ticks from Jingpo Lake.However,the co-infection could only be detected in Ixodes persulcatus of both tourist areas.Surveillance data showed that the major ticks were more likely to be appeared in July at Tiger Mountain and in June at Jingpo Lake.Data from the sequence analysis on B.b.s.1 showed that the B.b.s.1 in tourist areas could be classified into three different genotypes,other than B.garinii and B.afzelii.We first detected B.valaisiana-like group genotype in northeast of China.Results from the sequence analysis of SFGR positive products showed that the two DNA sequences of newly detected agents were completely the same as Rickettsia sp.HL-93 which was detected in Hulin and Rickettsia sp.H820 found in northeast,China.Conclusion The co-infection of B.b.s.1 and SFGR was detected in ticks from the tourist areas of Heilongjiang province,and data from the sequencing of specific fragment showed that various kinds of genotypes existed in this area.However; the rates of co-infectionitis-different according to environment,time and population that contributed to the kinds of and the index of ticks existed in the surveys points,also the infection rate of the ticks was studied.

Objective To investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among elderly people in communities of Nanning, so as to provide scientific basis for the formulation of MCI early intervention measures. Methods A total of sample of 3 000 elderly people aged 60 or above living in Nanning area were sampled out using the method of cluster random sampling from three communities in Nanning. The Beijing version of the montreal cognitive assessment (MOCA-BJ) was administered by face to face interview. Results 833 MCI patients were detected. The standardized prevalence rate of MCI was 27.27% by the age composition of the population in Nanning in 2010. Single factor analysis showed that there were significant differences(all P<0.05)in the prevalence of MCI in different groups by age, education, occupation, exercise time, sleep time, number of reading, community activities and housework. Multivariate analysis showed that old age, primary education level, occupation of farmer/migrant worker and enterprise personnel/worker were the risk factors of MCI, adequate sleep time, moderate exercise time and reading times were the protective factors of MCI (all P<0.05). Conclusions The prevalence rate of MCI is high among the elderly in Nanning. The elderly with advanced age, primary school education, occupation as farmer/peasant-worker and enterprise personnel/workerare at high risk of developing MCI. Effective measures should be taken as soon as possible to prevent the occurrence and development of MCI.

To elucidate the principal of orthogonal factor analysis, using an example of factor analysis of metabolic syndrome. The basic structures and the fundamental concepts of orthogonal factor analysis were introduced and data involving 1877 women aged of 35-65 years, selected from a cross-sectional study, which was conducted in 1998 - 2001 in Shanghai, were included in this study. Factor analysis was carried out using principle components analysis with Varimax orthogonal rotation of the components of the metabolic syndrome. The different components of the metabolic syndrome were not linked closely with the other components and loaded on the six different factors,which mainly reflected by the variables of obesity, blood pressure, plasma glucose, plasma insulin, triglycerides and HDL-cholesterol respectively. Six major factors of the metabolic syndrome were uncorrelated with each other and explained 86% of the variance in the original data. The factor score and total factor score for the individual could be obtained according to the component score coefficient matrix. Although the components of the metabolic syndrome were related statistically, the finding of six factors suggested that the components of the metabolic syndrome did not show high degrees of intercorrelation. As a linear method of data reduction, the mode reduced a large set of measured intercorrelation variables into a smaller set of uncorrelated factors, which explained the majority of the variance in the original variables. Factor analysis was well suited for revealing underlying patterns or structure among variables showing high degrees of intercorrelation.

OBJECTIVETo explore the adult lipid profile of Huayang community from 1998 to 2000 and Caoyang communities in 2001.

METHODSRepresentative serum samples of 5628 adults (aged 20 - 95 years) were obtained in Huayang and Caoyang communities during 1998.9 and 2001.11. Standard epidemiology questionnaire, physical check-ups and serum lipids data were analyzed.

RESULTSAfter standardization to Chinese census statistics of 2000, the age-and sex-standardized means of total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C and triglycerides of the two communities (Huayang vs. Caoyang) were 5.01 mmol/L vs. 4.43 mmol/L, 1.28 mmol/L vs. 1.32 mmol/L, 3.37 mmol/L vs. 2.99 mmol/L, 1.97 mmol/L vs. 1.60 mmol/L respectively, and the age- and sex- standardized prevalence of dyslipidemia was 52.9% vs. 25.1%, and the prevalence for borderline dyslipidemia was 76.0% vs. 56.2%, respectively. The decreasing order of dyslipidemia prevalence of the two communities was: elevated TG, decreased HDL-C, elevated LDL-C and TC. The standardized proportions of optimal HDL-C level were only 15.7% and 16.1% in Huayang and Caoyang respectively which was much lower than these of TG, LDL and TC.

CONCLUSIONSThe standardized prevalence of adult dyslipidemia and borderline dyslipidemia in the two communities were high. Dyslipidemia of the two communities was TG and decreased.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the effect of Notoginseng Radix on hepatic expression of transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1) and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) in rats with alcoholic liver disease (ALD), in order to discuss its protective effect on alcoholic cirrhosis.

METHODFifty SD male rats were divided into the normal control group, the model group, the high-dose and low-dose Notoginseng Radix groups (3.0, 12.0 g x kg(-1)) and the magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate group (24 mg x kg(-1)), with 10 rats in each group. Apart from the control group, other groups were administered with ethanol-cornoil-pyrazole for 14 weeks to establish the alcoholic liver disease model. During the establishment of the model, the high-dose and low-dose Notoginseng Radix groups were administered with 12 g x kg(-1) x d(-1) Notoginseng Radix for 14 weeks, once everyday. Efforts were made to detect liver function, pathology with Masson staining, and the expressions of TGF-beta1, Smad3, Smad7 and CTGF mRNA.

RESULTCompared with the rats in model group, rats in Notoginseng Radix groups showed significant reduction in liver ALT, AST, collagen fiber deposition, and TGF-beta1, Smad3 and CTGF mRNA expressions in liver tissues, with the increase in the expression quantity of Smad7 mRNA. There were differences between the Notoginseng Radix groups. No significant difference was observed between the high-dose Notoginseng Radix group and the magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate group.

CONCLUSIONNotoginseng Radix can affect TGF-beta1/Smads signaling pathway and reduce the expression of CTGF.

OBJECTIVETo study the relationship between blood pressure control status and patients' knowledge on hypertension prevention and control among hypertensive patients.

METHODSA total of 726 hypertensives were selected from four community health service centers (2 urban and 2 rural) in Beijing. All subjects were investigated by questionnaires and their blood pressures were measured at the same time.

RESULTSThe rate for blood pressure under control (< 140/90 mm Hg, 1 mm Hg = 0.133 kPa) in the rural and urban patients were 46.4% and 23.9% respectively. The control rate increased with the increase of patients' knowledge on prevention and control of hypertension in both urban and rural patients. The cumulative effect of knowledge on hypertension control status could contribute 30.0% to the difference in hypertension control rate between rural and urban patients.

CONCLUSIONPatients' knowledge on hypertension control was significantly related to the rate on hypertension control. Health education should be helpful to improve the rate on hypertension control.

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the content of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in earthworms. A physiologically-based extraction test (PBET) digestion in vitro /MDCK cell model was established to investigate the bioaccessibility of Cd and As in earthworms. The hazard index (HI) method and the margin of exposure (MOE) method were used to assess the risks of the total content and the bioaccessible content of Cd and As. The results showed that the total content of Cd and As in six batches of earthworms ranged from 8.319 to 33.606 mg·kg^-1 and from 0.532 to 16.412 mg·kg^-1, respectively. After uptake by MDCK cells, the bioaccessibility of Cd in earthworms ranged from 10.13% to 64.16%, and the bioaccessibility of As was from 2.72% to 46.57%. The results of risk assessment showed that before uptake by MDCK cells, the MOE values of As and HI values of Cd for all batches of earthworms were greater than 1, which suggests that the risks of As are acceptable but the risks of Cd are unacceptable. After transportation by MDCK cells, except for one batch of earthworms, the HI values of Cd in the other five batches were less than 1, which suggests that the risks are at a safe level. This study provides important technical support for a more objective and scientific assessment of the health risks of heavy metals in traditional Chinese medicines, and for a more scientific and reasonable standard limit of heavy metals.
