Methods The epidemiological, clinical, laboratory and treatment data of clonorchiasis patients in Department of Infectious Diseases, Second Affiliated Hospital, Harbin Medical University from 2002 to 2004 were retrospectively analyzed. Results Sixty-eight point two percent patients had a history of eating raw freshwater fish and shrimp. Patients with occupations as cook, fish stock man, fishing man and fishmonger accounted for 22.6%. The transmission route was not clear in 9.1% of patients. The common clinical manifestations were abdominal pain (60.3%), fatigue (52.3%), diarrhea (33.0%), anorexia (69.3%), jaundice (23.9%), hepatomegaly (59.1%), splenomegaly (8.0%), dizziness (20.9%), fever (5.7%) and biliary colic (14.8%). Twenty-eight point four percent were asymptomatic. Other findings included liver dysfunction (70.4 %) and eosinophile granulocyteosis(69.3 %). Negative rate of stool egg of clonorchis sinensis after treatment with praziquantel or albendazole was 91.9% or 86.5%, respectively. There was no significant difference between the two groups ( χ2 = 0.561, P = 0.454). Conclusions Clinical manifestations of patients with clonorchiasis sinensis are complicated and often accompanied with liver dysfunction. Clonorchiasis sinensis is often misdiagnosed and should be paid much attention.

BACKGROUND:Our previous studies have shown that strontium-doped calcium polyphosphate containing low-dose strontium appears to have a significant effect on angiogenesis-related behaviors of monocultured umbilical vein endothelial cells and osteoblasts.
OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effect of strontium-doped calcium polyphosphate on angiogenesis-related behaviors of umbilical vein endothelial cells and osteoblasts co-cultured, including celladhesion, spreading, proliferation, as wel as the protein secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor from co-culture system in vitro.
METHODS:Human umbilical vein endothelial cells and osteoblastic cells (MG63) were utilized in this study. cells from passage 3 were used for preparation of the cel-scaffold constructs. After placed in 24-wel plate at a ratio of 2:1, human umbilical vein endothelial cells and MG63 cells were seeded onto strontium-doped calcium
polyphosphate, calcium polyphosphate and hydroxyapatite scaffolds and co-cultured for 7 days. The vascular endothelial growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor protein levels were determined through a double ligand enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The colorimetric 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay was performed to quantify the effect of scaffolds on cellproliferation.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Compared with those on calcium polyphosphate and hydroxyapatite scaffolds, cells on strontium-doped calcium polyphosphate scaffolds attached and spread better with a significantly improved cellproliferation. More importantly, the vascular endothelial growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor expressions were significantly higher in the strontium-doped calcium polyphosphate group than the other two groups (P<0.05), indicating strontium-doped calcium polyphosphate can up-regulate levels of vascular endothelial growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor proteins.

OBJECTIVETo explore the effect of Modified Hangqi Chifeng Decoction (MHCD) on levels of collagen type IV (Col IV), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2) in extracellular matrix (ECM) of glomerular mesangial cells (GMCs) in LPS induced mice.
METHODSNormal serum and telmisartan, high, medium, low dose MHCD containing serums were prepared by using serum pharmacology method. GMCs were cultured in vitro. The proliferation of mesangial cells were induced using LPS as stimulating factor. GMCs were divided into six groups, i.e., the normal group, the model group, the telmisartan group, high, medium and low dose MHCD groups. Col IV content in the supernatant of mesangial cells was detected using ELISA. Protein expressions of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 were detected using Western blot.
RESULTSCompared with the normal group, Col IV content obviously increased in the model group after 72-h LPS stimulation; protein expressions of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 were obviously up-regulated, and MMP-2/TIMP-2 ratio was down-regulated in the model group (P < 0.01). Compared with the model group, Col IV content obviously decreased in high and medium dose MHCD groups and the telmisartan group (P < 0.01); protein expressions of MMP-2 were obviously down-regulated in medium and low dose MHCD groups (P < 0.01, P < 0.05); the protein expression of TIMP-2 was obviously down-regulated in high, medium, low dose MHCD groups and the telmisartan group (P < 0.01). The pro- tein expression of TIMP-2 was obviously lower in the high dose MHCD group than in the low dose MHCD group (P < 0.01). MMP-2/TIMP-2 ratio was obviously up-regulated in the telmisartan group, high and medium dose MHCD groups (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONMHCD could regulate disordered MMP-2/TIMP-2 ratio in LPS induced ECM, inhibit excessive production of Col IV in ECM, promote the degradation of ECM, reduce the accumulation of ECM, thereby, delaying the process of glomerular sclerosis.

Objective To establish nucleic acid testing techniques for detecting Nipah virus (NiV) and Hendra virus (HeV), and to test the NiV and HeV in peripheral blood collected from domestic pigs, cows and goats in Chongqing. Methods Peripheral blood samples of 580 domestic pigs, 250 cows, 180 goats were collected from Chongqing since June 2007 to June 2008. The lymphocytes were separated by density gradient centrifugation and total RNA was extracted using Trizol method for detection of NiV and HeV with one-step real-time RT-PCR. Sequence identification and analysis were performed for positive PCR prod-ucts. Virus isolation and culture were adopted for positive samples, and epidemiologic reports were submit-ted. Results Nucleic acid detections searching for NiV and HeV were successfully performed in animal blood samples collected from Chongqing. "Takeoff points" were not found in fluorescence amplification curves of all samples. Curves kept the same slope, and assays were judged as negative. Conclusion Until now, Neither NiV or HeV infection has been found in domestic animals blood samples collected from Chongqing, which suggest a lower possibility of outbreaks of Nipah disease and Hendra disease in Chongqing in the near future.
