1.Effects of Self-leadership, Professional Self-concept, Emotional Labor on Professional Quality of Life in Hospital Nurses
Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Administration 2020;26(5):447-456
Purpose:
This study was performed to identify levels of self-leadership, professional self-concept, emotional labor and professional quality of life, and investigate the relationship among these variables in hospital nurses.
Methods:
This study was a cross-sectional survey. The data were collected from May 20 to June 30, 2019. Participants were 200 nurses working at 4 general hospitals in Korea. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program.
Results:
There was a positive relationship between compassion satisfaction and self-leadership, professional self-concept and emotional labor, and a negative relationship between burnout and the other variables in this study. There were positive and negative relationships between secondary traumatic stress and the other variables in this study.Compassion satisfaction, which is one sub-factors of professional quality of life, was influenced by professional self-concept and emotional labor, and these variables explained 55% of compassion satisfaction. Burnout was only influenced by professional self-concept which explained 47% of burnout. Secondary traumatic stress was influenced by emotional labor and gender which accounted for 5% of secondary traumatic stress.
Conclusion
These results show that professional self-concept is very important in promoting quality of life for nurses. So nurse managers should try to strengthen nurses’ professional self-concepts.

Childhood Kidney Diseases 2015;19(2):154-158
PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the status of renal function and the presence of urinary abnormalities in early adult patients with Turner syndrome (TS). METHODS: Sixty-three girls with TS, who are attending pediatric endocrine clinics in Busan Paik Hosp., were studied. Urine and blood chemistry tests were performed in every visiting times. Renal ultrasonography was performed in all patients at the initial diagnosis, and intravenous pyelography, DMSA renal scan and renal CT were also performed, if necessary. RESULTS: Of the 63 patients, the karyotype showed 45,X in 32 (50.8%) , mosaicism in 22 (34.9%) and structural aberration in 9 (14.3%). The renal function at the latest visit was shown as normal in all patients. Nephrotic syndrome had developed in one patient. Hematuria was observed in seven patients. Renal anomalies were observed in 20 of the 63 TS (31.7%). Of the 32 TS patients with 45,X karyotype, 13 (40.6%) had renal anomalies, while these were found in 7 (22.6%) of 31 TS patients with mosaicism/structural aberration. But there was no significant statistical difference between two karyotype groups. CONCLUSION: Based on this study, most of the patients with TS do not have any significant problems related to renal function until early adulthood, regardless of renal malformation or hematuria.

Imatinib mesylate (IM) is used to treat a wide range of diseases, including Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), on account of its high tolerability and low incidence of minor adverse events. Hemorrhage is thought to be a rare complication of IM. Recently, IM has been associated with reduced alpha2-plasmin inhibitor and platelet dysfunction. We report here the case of a 33-year-old female patient with CML who experienced subdural hematoma after an incremental increase in IM dosage due to a loss of complete molecular response. This case indicates that physicians should be alert to this atypical cause of headache in patients taking high-dose IM.

Background:
The Korean Society of Nephrology (KSN) has maintained a nationwide end-stage renal disease (ESRD) registry data from Korean Renal Data System (KORDS) since 1985, as the representative registry of ESRD patients in Korea. This review is aimed to update the status of domestic ESRD and to provide evidence on the direction of dialysis therapy.
Methods:
The KORDS Committee of KSN has collected data on dialysis centers and patients through an online registry program, and the data from 1986 to 2019 were analyzed.
Results:
The incidence and prevalence of ESRD patients in Korea are increasing. The ESRD population numbered more than 100,000 in 2019, doubling during the 10 years since 2010. The proportion of diabetes mellitus as a major cause of ESRD seems to have reached a plateau. The increasing number of elderly dialysis patients is a constant trend, with more than half for the proportion of patients older than 65 years old in 2019. All-cause mortality decreased for the last approximately 20 years, regardless of sex, age, and cause of ESRD. The 5-year patient survival rate in both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis increased from 2001 to 2013. Since 2013, the patient survival rates in peritoneal dialysis were similar to those in hemodialysis. Cardiovascular complications were the leading cause of death in ESRD patients.
Conclusions
The incidence and prevalence of Korean ESRD patients have increased over time, although patient survival has also steadily increased. The establishment of a surveillance method to address the major cause of mortality in ESRD patients will help improve outcomes.
