OBJECTIVETo study the characteristic and surgical treatment of traumatic lumbo-sacro-pelvic injuries.

METHODSA retrospective study was carried out on 8 cases with traumatic lumbo-sacro-pelvic injuries between August 2005 and February 2008, which included 6 male and 2 female, aged from 21 to 52 years with a mean age of 38.4 years. ISS scores were undertaken to evaluate the injury severity of the cases after admission. Measures were taken to treat the emergency that affected the patients' lives. After the patients' conditions were stable, lumbo-iliac fixation was performed to treat traumatic lumbo-sacro-pelvic injuries. Imaging examinations were made to observe the reduction of fracture after operation. Injury of nerve was evaluated with ASIA score, and ASIA scores of preoperation and the last follow-up were analyzed statistically with paired t test.

RESULTSThe group was followed up for 9 to 25 months, averaging 16.9 months. Postoperative imaging examinations showed satisfied reduction of fracture. The preoperative ASIA sensory score and motor score were 35.8+/-5.3 and 31.9+/-6.4 respectively, while the sensory score and motor score were 51.8+/-13.8 and 38.2+/-7.5 at the last follow-up respectively. The sensory and motor functions were improved significantly after operation (P<0.01). The functions of urination and defecation of 6 cases were recovered for different degree after operation. In all of the cases, no aggravated injury of nerve occurred.

CONCLUSIONSTraumatic lumbo-sacro-pelvic injuries is a kind of severe injury of lumbo-sacro-pelvic region. It can be treated with lumbo-iliac internal fixation and fine clinical effect can be gained.

Objective To investigate the genotype of metallo-?-lactamases (MBL) produced by carbapenem resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa in pediatric patients.Methods 59 strains of resistance to imipenem or meropenem were collected from December 2003 to November 2005 in Beijing children's hospital.Isolates were further evaluated for MBL production by two screening methods.MBL Etest strips were used to screen the phenotype of MBL production.Molecular screening for blaVIM,blaIMP,blaSPM and blaGIM was carried out using primers targeting the conserved regions of the MBL genes.The PCR fragments obtained with integron primers were sequenced on both strands.The nucleotide sequences were compared with sequences available over the Internet.Results Of the 59 carbapenem resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa included in this study,29 (49.2%)were MBL positive using Etest methods,and 39 (66.1%) of these tested positive for MBL genes by PCR.35 (89.7%) were positive for blaIMP genes and 4 (10.3%) were positive for blaVIM genes.All isolates were negative for SPM and GIM DNA sequencing revealed that the IMP-1 was detected in 35 IMP-producing isolates,and VIM-2 was detected in 4 VIM-producing isolates.Conclusions This study has demonstrated that MBL-producing strains in pediatric are more common than in adult.IMP-1-producing strains are the main in pediatric,and VIM-2-producing strains concurred.The production of MBL is one of the important reasons of carbapenem resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa in pediatric.It is very important to monitor the production of MBL.

Objective To explore the impact of cognitive training on cognitive function of the elderly in a community. Methods Ninety elderly people at and above sixty years old in a community of Shanghai were recruited in the study, and were divided into two groups: the cognitive training group and the control group.The cognitive training group conducted cognitive training for 12 weeks (24 times), a comprehensive training method incorporating cognitive training courses with Lumosity ( a brain functional exercise software) .The two groups were evaluated before and after the intervention with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale ( MoCA) . Results Before the intervention, the scores of four fields ( i.e. visual space and executive function, naming, delayed recall, and directional force) and the total score for the cognitive training group were higher than the control group ( P <0 .05 );there was no statistically significant difference in other three fields ( i.e.attention, language ability and abstract ability) between the two groups (P>0.05).After the intervention, the scores of four fields (i.e.visual space and execu-tive function, attention, abstract, delayed recall) and the total score for the cognitive group improved, compared with the control group ( P<0 .05 ) . Conclusion Cognitive training could improve or maintain cognitive function for the elderly in the community.

OBJECTIVETo describe the satisfactory intra-iliac paths in Galveston fixation combined with adult human cadaver and radiology study.

METHODSFive adult cadavers with 10 hemisected pelvises were harvested. Parallelly to the Chiotic line, the bone every other 5 mm till the superior rim of the acetabulum (SRA) observing the morphologic characteristics of each cross-sections of the iliac columns was cut. Fifty consecutive and randomly selected patients were measured using three-dimensional computed tomographic reformations. Three paths' valid bony canal lengths (LVBC), contractions' inner widths and positions were evaluated.

RESULTSThe Path A with the longest LVBC (137 +/- 8) mm in male, (130 +/- 11) mm in female was the most satisfactory intra-iliac path according to both adult cadaver and radiographic measurement Path A and B allowed placement of 100 mm and 8 mm implants in male, 80 mm and 6 to 7 mm implants in female patients.

CONCLUSIONThe Path A, passing from the Click point towards the bottom of the anterior inferior iliac spine provides a longer and potentially safer anchor site compared with the traditional path.

OBJECTIVETo know about content of iodine in foods sold in Tianjing markets presently, and the iodine nutrition conditions in college students. It was also aimed to probe the functions of the iodized salt complement with the dietary iodine intake, and whether the urine iodine could reflect dietary iodine intake.

METHODS278 food samples in markets were collected by a randomly stratified sampling method, while the arsenic-cerium catalytic contact method was used to determine the content in food. The dietary information of students for seven days was recorded, and the urine iodine was determined through the arsenic-cerium catalytic spectrophotometry.

RESULTSThe determination of 47 kinds and 278 food samples indicated that the content of iodine within animal foods (7.8 microg/100 g - 30.8 microg/100 g) was higher than that within plant foods (1.8 microg/100 g - 16.1 microg/100 g). The investigation also showed that students who regarded vegetarian food as principle accounted for 70. 19%. The amount of dietary iodine intake among those students, based on the dietary survey, was (111.67 +/- 53.18) microg/d, while supplementary iodine from iodized salt was about (230.27 +/- 45.55) microg/d. Therefore, the total iodine provided from diet would be (341.95 +/- 89.58) microg/d. Modified by urine creatinine, the median of urine iodine was 271.28 microg/gCr, and the urine iodine and dietary iodine intake was found positively related (r(s) = 0.463, P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONSRegarding the vegetarian food as the principle, most of students investigated are not rich. The dietary iodine intake is lower than RDA (150 microg), but it can be obtained the iodized salt by 230. 27 microg, which is the possible supplement to the shortage from foods.

Objective To evaluate the effects of mother forum on child vaccination rate and its timeliness rate. Methods A total of 596 neonatal mother who were achieved in our hospital from January 2011 to October 2012 were randomly divided into experimental group and control group by the single or plural number of admission sequence on average. Both groups underwent routine education with child vaccination, but mothers in the experimental group were given training course of mother forum. When the child grew up to one year and two months, the child vaccination rate and its timeliness rate were compared. Results The measles vaccination rate in EPI vaccines between the two groups were not significantly different (P>0. 05), but the other five kinds of vaccination rates were higher in the experimental group compared with the control group (χ2 =6. 21-11. 56, P<0. 05). The timeliness vaccination rate in the experimental group were higher than that of the control group (χ2 =7. 05-20. 05, P<0. 01). Three kinds of extra EPI vaccination rates represented the same trend as above (χ2 =39. 45 -164. 45,P<0. 01), and as well as timeliness vaccination rate (χ2 =39. 97 -213. 37, P <0. 01). Conclusions Mother forum can strengthen parental attention to vaccination, and enhance child vaccination rate and the timeliness vaccination rate.

BACKGROUNDIn the present study, we characterized multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDRP) clinical isolates from a paediatric facility and investigated the types and features of the metallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs) produced by carbapenem-resistant strains.

METHODSFour hundred and ninety-eight strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were isolated from patients at Beijing Children's Hospital between January 2005 and December 2006. The minimal inhibition concentrations (MICs) of the strains for 13 antibiotics were measured. A combination of the E test and PCR amplification/DNA sequencing was used to define the carbapenem-resistant strains.

RESULTSWe found that 24.1% (120/498) of the isolates were MDRP. The frequencies of resistance to imipenem and meropenem were 34.2% and 35.8%, respectively, and the MIC50 and MIC90 values for the two antibiotics were identical at 4 microg/ml and 32 microg/ml, respectively. The detection rate for carbapenem resistance was 49.2% (59/120). Among the 59 carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, 39 (66.1%) were positive for the MBL genotype; 35 (89.7%) strains carried the bla(IMP) gene and 4 (10.3%) strains carried the bla(VIM) gene. Neither bla(SPM) nor bla(GIM) was amplified from any of the 59 isolates. DNA sequencing revealed that IMP-1 was present in 35 IMP-producing isolates and VIM-2 was detected in four VIM-producing isolates.

CONCLUSIONSThese MDRP isolates exhibited high frequencies of resistance to carbapenems among clinical isolates from a paediatric facility in Beijing, China. The production of MBL appears to be an important mechanism for carbapenem resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Toxoplasma gondii is a serious foodborne zoonosis,which can not only affect the development of animal husbandry and the safety of meat products,but also cause great harm to public health.Therefore,the prevention of toxoplasmosis is crucial.Toxoplasma gondii vaccine which is regarded as an important measure to prevent toxoplasmosis has significant value to both public health and economics.This paper mainly summarizes advances in the study of Toxoplasma gondii vaccine in order to provide references for the further development of it,so as to control the toxoplasmosis more effectively.

Objective To adapt to the acute cerebral ischemia re-search , we modified the permanent bilateral common carotid artery occlu-sion (2VO) rat model.Methods Global ischemia models were estab-lished by permanent ligation of bilateral common, internal, external ca-rotid arteries (6VO) and the 2VO method respectively.The sham group were done simultaneously.Then the differences among three groups in mortality, behavioral score tests,pathological morphology, the expression of inflammatory factor by immunohistochemical method, and the percen-tage of cell apoptosis were compared.Results Twenty-four hours after operations, the mortality of 6VO group ( 40% ) was obviously higher than 2VO group ( 0 ) .The results of behavioral score, necrosis rate of neurons, the expression of inflammatory factors and cell apoptosis in hippocampus CA1 area in 6VO group were significantly higher than 2VO group and sham group ( P <0.05 ) .Conclusion The modified 6VO model is an ideal way to observe acute global ischemic injury in rats.

Gualou-Xiebai-Banxia decoction has a long history of medical use for treating cardiovascular diseases in China. In this study, we investigated the protective effect and underlying mechanisms GXB in type II diabetes with acute myocardial ischemia (T2DM-AMI) rats. We hypothesized that GXB may display its protective effect on T2DM-AMI by reducing endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) apoptosisviaactivating PI3K (phosphatidyl inositol 3-kinase)/Akt (serine/threonine protein kinase B)/eNOS (endothelial nitric oxide synthase) signaling. Rats were challenged with a high-fat diet and intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin to induce a model of type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and coronary ligation to induce acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Changes in metabolites were assessed via enzyme-linked immunoassay and biochemical examination. The number and apoptosis rate of EPCs in peripheral blood were detected by flow cytometry. Target mRNAs and proteins in EPCs were analyzed by RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. The results demonstrated that GXB treatment decreased T2DM-AMI-associated changes in plasma fasting blood glucose, muscular enzymes, and blood lipids, and reduced oxidative stress. Furthermore, EPC apoptosis was increased in T2DM-AMI rats and was associated with decreased mRNA and protein levels of PI3K, Akt, and eNOS compared to the controls. Conversely, T2DM-AMI rats treated with GXB exhibited more circulating EPCs and downregulated levels of cell apoptosis, combined with increased mRNA and protein levels of PI3K, Akt, and eNOS compared to those of untreated T2DM-AMI rats. Our study showed that GXB treatment mitigated EPC apoptosis and promoted PI3K/Akt/eNOS signaling in T2DM-AMI rats.
